Suggestions & Concerns / Moderator editing of community posts.

Just wondering what would cause a moderator to edit a community post, such as this one without notice?

Technology & Information / GPU upgrade for X201
« on: February 25, 2017, 03:33:38 AM »
Hey ya'll.  I am looking to bump up my GPU on my Lenovo X201 so I can play a few games on it.  I tried researching what is compatible, but I can't really make heads or tails of it.  Anyone here know what GPUs might be compatible with my laptop?  Thanks for the help.

Flat Earth Community / Cool Hard Logic - Testing Flattards - Part 1
« on: November 29, 2016, 03:27:56 PM »

Cool Hard Logic begins a 4 part series debunkning FE Theory.  Right off the bat, it looks like did not research much here, because he is missing some of the more sophisticated solutions to the problems he points out.  Still some good points are made and he is a funny dude.

Other than his derision of FEers, what do members think are the good/bad points he makes in this video?

Science & Alternative Science / SETI Candidate
« on: August 30, 2016, 02:19:45 AM »
This is interesting:

They found a strong radio signal from a system with a known exo-planet, and the signal has no immediately known natural source.  SETI is going to continue to monitor it.  Spoiler Alert: It's the Vulcans.

Suggestions & Concerns / Home Page Announcements
« on: June 11, 2016, 11:57:58 AM »
Would it be possible to change the post that is on the front page?  To have the home page constantly announcing the resignation of an admin is maybe not the most optimistic or attractive message.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / The Breitbart Crew

Late a couple of nights ago I learned about the existence of Milo Yiannopoulos and Ben Shapiro.  Really interesting characters, who I really expected not to like; except that I found myself agreeing with a number of their positions, idealogically at least. They have a strong message of self-responsibility, which I strongly agree with, even if they don't always apply it evenly.  I was surprised to learn that the gender wage gap was something of a myth as well.  I really appreciate the hardline approach they take on safe spaces/trigger warnings as an impediment to free speech and also the de-emotionalizing of race politics in the US.  That being said Ben Shapiro is an ungracious asshole, who does nothing to build bridges with people he purports to want to help, but that is not particularly important.

Does anyone know of any good criticism of these guys, or have anything they feel is important to balance out their positions?  I am looking around with some interest and will post any goodies I come across.

Suggestions & Concerns / CN 404 error
« on: October 27, 2015, 06:59:56 PM »

I am getting a 404 error whenever I try to navigate to CN.  I am using Firefox 41.02 on OSX.  Any ideas why my internet is broken?

Technology & Information / My computer is a slut...

...and went gallivanting around torrents with no protection. Contracted some malware and I can't seem to shake it. I used McAfee and Malwarebytes to no avail. I can't even tell what malware I have. What is the next step before reformatting?

Technology & Information / Laptop Advice
« on: June 17, 2015, 11:23:32 PM »
So I am looking to buy a laptop, preferably in the $300 range, but can go higher, just not sure how high yet.  I need it to run Quickbooks Pro 2015 and that is about it aside from some excel and interwebs... And Neverwinter Nights. Here are the system requirements for Quickbooks:

2.4 GHz processor minimum
2 GB RAM minimum
4x CD-ROM drive required for CD installations
Display optimized for 1024 x 768 screen resolution or higher with up to 2 Extended monitors
Best optimized for Default DPI setting (96 DPI or 100%). Additionally, medium DPI (120 DPI or 110%) is supported to ensure an optimal experience for 110% scaling.
2.5 GB of disk space (additional space required for data files)
Additional software: 250 MB for Microsoft .NET 4.0 Runtime, provided on the QuickBooks CD
Additional requirements  for Intuit Data Protect in QuickBooks Connected Services offerings
Require minimum 2.0 GB Ram
Twice the size of the largest File set to back up + 100MB or twice the size to restore. The space is only required from the work folder LocalApplicationData+ā€¯Intuit\Intuit Data Protect"

Any recommendations on where to look and which manufacturer(s) might suit me best?

Technology & Information / Router recommendation
« on: February 12, 2015, 12:15:17 AM »

I just bought a wireless stereo system and went to plug it in to my router when I noticed it only has one Ethernet port. Looks like a need to get a new router if I want to have my internet network and this speaker system function simultaneously. Can anyone recommend a good off the shelf router preferably with great broadcast strength as my modem lives in our basement?

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Cuba Opens Its Doors to the USA
« on: December 20, 2014, 04:57:52 PM »
How are Americans feeling about the impending opening of borders between Cuba and the USA?

Excited to see Havana or enjoy the beaches of Cayo Coco?

Hopefully Cubans can get access to some quality produce now because the food there is fucking terrible.

Flat Earth Theory / Recent Experiments Proving a FE
« on: September 25, 2014, 07:01:16 PM »
Has there been an experiment done recently that demonstrates the Earth is disc-like rather than a spheroid?

I would be interested in seeing a write-up of any such experiment so it could be thoroughly discussed.

Flat Earth Theory / AWT-Evidence?
« on: September 25, 2014, 06:59:16 PM »
I have never seen evidence for AWT posted on this site.  I would like any proponent of the hypothesis to present their evidence so it can be duly examined.

Thanks for your time.

Flat Earth Theory / Discovery a challenge to UA?
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:32:04 PM »

Curious to know what FEers who do not subscribe to gravitation of any kind make of the article that DDDDats linked to.  Would this make you reconsider the existence of UA?

My Alumni refused to grow a pair and tell this sexist douche to that his beliefs have no place in a public forum.  Although I think such beliefs are barbaric, if someone wants to practice this in their personal life, that's fine.  But asking someone else to accommodate your discrimination is too far.

Suggestions & Concerns / Should Mods Be Held to Higher Standard
« on: December 16, 2013, 06:58:01 PM »
In light of Rooster's recent thread in S & C, I wanted to have a general conversation about the behavior of mods.  I have always felt that a moderator should be setting an example for the other posters on the site.  They ostensibly exist not only to enforce the rules, but also to be the mediator between the administrators rules and the people who post.  As such, I feel their understanding and application of the rules should be of a greater magnitude than anyone on the site.  I definitely believe that you cannot ask someone to respect rules you yourself do not obey, but this belief is obviously not ubiquitous and I wanted to know what the feelings on the site are towards possibly creating a moderator's code of conduct?

Technology & Information / Reliable Project Management Software for Free?
« on: December 16, 2013, 06:40:58 PM »
Does anyone know of free software that can be used for logistic and project management that can be used for billing as well?

Here is an example of free software to give an idea:

This is the question put forward by this video.  Have a watch and tell me what you think:
