Philosophy, Religion & Society / Eugenics
« on: November 17, 2021, 03:48:26 PM »
An author, Iain Banks, whose books I have been reading, turns out to have some pretty interesting beliefs. He is a very blunt supporter of eugenics and yet he's also obviously supportive of communism. The real communism, the stateless, classless society kind; as opposed to the authoritarian tankie meme communism we have today.

In his books, there is an ultra-mega-super-advanced society that has no government, no classes, no scarcity of any form. Labor is required by no one; it is all done by fully autonomous machines. There is no form of regulation or laws, even against murder or rape. People just... don't do that (most of the time). Why? Well, because they were programmed not to do it!

CNN: One of the most compelling aspects of the Culture's society is that it's post-scarcity: no one wants for anything, people aren't hungry, everyone is clothed. Do you think it's within humanity's nature to build a society like that?

Iain M. Banks: Arguably not. This is why the Culture isn't us. I thought long and hard about this long before the books were published and decided, that the Culture wasn't going to be us in the future, it would be humanoid, they could kind of pass for us, because I'm not sure that we are.

It's a very pessimistic thing to say that we do seem to be wedded to war and destruction and torture and racism and sexism -- all the horrible things, all the xenophobic things -- we seem to have a xenophobic gene sequence. I think we should genetically modify ourselves, frankly -- if we could identify the bit that causes all the horrible things we can knock it out and become nicer people.

Normally, we have eugenics arguments spouted by what most would call 'right-leaning' ideologies such as Fascism. It's interesting for an author to have written such an amazing communist utopia, then turn around and say the only way we can achieve it is by reprogramming humanity into it.

I'm not even sure he's wrong. Is such a society possible without some hardcore gene editing changing the face of humanity? Is there a 'selfish gene' we can delete? Maybe eugenics isn't that bad! Is an idealistic utopia worth the cost of programming people to be inclined to enjoy it?

If you own an iPhone product, Apple will now scan all of your saved images under the guise of protecting children. It will forcibly install the app onto your phone. Apple plans on releasing this spyware app on all of its products at a later date.

Shortly after reports today that Apple will start scanning iPhones for child-abuse images, the company confirmed its plan and provided details in a news release and technical summary.
The changes will roll out "later this year in updates to iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS Monterey," Apple said

At least they have the decency to tell you. I'd imagine Google does this already.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Coronavirus Vaccine and You
« on: January 16, 2021, 06:51:12 PM »
"Microsoft, Oracle and and other tech giants team up Covid-19 vaccine 'passports'"

Some of the country's biggest tech firms and health care organizations have joined together to help facilitate that return to "normal." The group, called the Vaccine Credential Initiative, wants to ensure that everyone has access to a secure, digital record of their Covid-19 vaccination — like a digital vaccine passport — that can be stored in people's smartphones. The records could be used for everything from airline travel to entering concert venues.

I for one am glad that oversized tech companies are now being given power to whitelist people. I am certain that this system will not be abused in any way and mistakes will not be made. This will not set any dangerous precedents for private organizations to maintain deeper control over other people's activities.

The likely only batch of headsets to go out before Half-Life Alyx will be sold on March 9 at 1 pm ET. I'm going to try to buy one and will review/complain about it here.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Jeffrey Epstein is Dead
« on: August 10, 2019, 02:12:39 PM »

His death is an apparent "suicide"...

This is after only a few names have been released, including Prince Andrew of the UK royal family and Bill Richardson, the former governor of New Mexico, each implicated in an international pedophile ring.

Flat Earth Investigations / One of these things is not like the others

One of these things does not belong

Round Moon, round Mars, round... wait, no, that's not a round Earth. That's a flat picture of Earth's horizon. I wonder why NASA would do that? Perhaps a rebel graphics artist is sending us a message?

Don't let your memes be dreams. The Trump wall is going to be built by a man with one arm and no legs, whether you like it or not.

The Great Wall of Trump cannot be stopped. Do not even try.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / The US Northeast is Too White
« on: July 29, 2018, 03:40:20 PM »
With articles such as New Hampshire being too white hitting front page news, what are our members thoughts on such a statement?

Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire are among the whitest states in the entire US (each above 93% white population). Yet all three of them also have the lowest crime rate. Now, without slipping into an amazing argument about whether or not white = no crime, let's talk instead about the fact that they're talking about importing immigrants for "diversity purposes". These immigrants come almost entirely from violent third world nations. Is it then no surprise that states with higher immigration also have higher violent crime rates?

Should we really strive to "diversify" areas simply for the sake of diversity? Is there something inherently wrong with a state that's almost entirely white?

IP addresses aren't personally identifiable information, and their connection status would be logged by your ISP anyway (which no doubt has Google analytics interacting with them regardless). I don't see how any of this is effective at stopping the "Google Overlords" from reaping data that's anonymized already.

Science & Alternative Science / Solar Freakin' Roofways
« on: May 24, 2017, 02:09:09 AM »

It even lets you calculate the rough cost to make your roof freakin' solar powered.

According to the calculator, it would only cost $72,500 to put solar freakin' roofways onto my house and it will generate $45,000 in electricity over the next 30 years. Wow, what a deal!

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Hillary is winning by a landslide

All Hail the Queen

Hello everyone. This is a poll for which candidate, if any, the Flat Earth Society should endorse on the front page. This will also mean possible media attention.

The poll is not limited to US citizens since this website is not entirely American. Feel free to vote in the poll even if you are not an American citizen.

Technology & Information / President Obama is Relinquishing Control of ICANN
« on: September 22, 2016, 01:00:30 AM »

Unless Congress acts otherwise, starting October 1st, the US contract with ICANN will expire and the corporation will be held accountable only to what is described as "multiple international shareholders in an organization akin to the UN." Although this has been planned well in advance, it still seems like a rather strange thing to do for your last year in office. I can't imagine the ramifications of giving away control of ICANN in this manner.
