Animated Avatars
« on: September 16, 2014, 04:06:32 AM »
Is there some known issue with using .gifs as avatars? My avatar animates properly when viewed at its source, here: http://i.imgur.com/5dmP6OL.gif

but when transferred to tfes.org Space Ghost is so astonished by the ignorance of globularists that he is unable to blink, ever.

It appears that your avatar was converted to PNG when uploaded through SMF. Without actually looking at what they did, I'm guessing that they're converting everything to keep size down, or perhaps for some faux security reasons. For the time being I'd suggest using the "Specify avatar by URL" option in avatar selection and linking to it externally. (Except we don't allow that on this forum - if the avatar is too big, it'll get downloaded and resized)

Nonetheless, this is dumb and I'll see if I can fix this.

Ah, it seems that avatars get resized (and converted to static PNG, for whatever reason) if their size exceeds the maximum allowed size of 125x125. If you resize your avatar before uploading it, it should work fine.

(Nonetheless, that's still dumb, so I'm looking for a better fix)

Well, he now looks like an SNES character and vibrates weirdly, but it will do for now.

The good news is that I worked out what's wrong and am now working on a fix.

Meanwhile, have a better resized GIF:

Awesome, that's much better, thanks. My entire profile has been restored to its original 2011 glory.

Sounds like a Tapatalk issue. The alpha channel is displaying correctly in my browser.

Oh come on, don't change your avatar and your name at the same time. It messes with my tracking software.

Use the classic PP/PP2 system.

You know what? Fixing this is much more frustrating than anticipated. I'll do it, but I'm not gonna promise a fix soon. For now, do not use animated avatars larger than 125x125 or they'll become un-animated.
