Incorrect. Why should I download something that I can not use?

So you can have it ready to go when you can use it.

I'm in no hurry. I'll just download it when proper support exists.

So, what can I do on this that I can't already do on my Windows version of Steam?

You can be forced to worship Gabe Newell, god of all PC gaming.

I don't think this is geared towards people who are satisfied with their current OS and would wonder what more they could do with this. Pretty sure this is for those who just want a simplified gaming/Steam experience.

I have to say, though, that I do like that they haven't tried to lock down the root account. Their FAQ even tells you how to gain root access. This seems like it would be useful for anyone who wants to run Linux, but spends most of their time playing games.

It's just another of the many special-purpose Debian derivatives, which I won't run for the same reasons I don't run any of the other Debian derivatives, but which could be immensely powerful for the right target audience.
