The shape of the sunlit area is supposed to be round. The old gif shows this. The new gif shows a sunlit area that would appear on a spherical object, not a flat surface. Someone is trolling the wiki.

No one is "trolling" the Wiki, and the shape need not necessarily be circular. The gif was updated a few years ago when Trekky made a few example animations.

Yes, the shape can be elliptical, but in the new picture, it is seeming to wrap around a spherical object. The earth is not a sphere?! This animation is intending to be misleading.
