Flat Earth Theory / Sunset and Sunrise
« on: May 20, 2015, 06:02:29 AM »
Although this question might have been asked many times before, I ask it again. I hope to get a clear, direct and concise answer...

How can I see a sunset or sunrise (i.e. the sun to be below a horizon, e.g. from a high montain), if the earth is flat?

You suggest that those people stating they have crossed the Antarctica did not know what they are doing?

If a person believing in the round earth believes to have crossed the Antarctica, what do you think has really happened?

Yes, please stay on topic...

If there is a 'wall' at the edge of the 'flat' earth, why can airplanes go over them, fly along, and finally reach their destination?

Yes, you are right. Maybe you do not exist. Maybe I am the only entity in existance, and all around me is a kind of simulation...

However, to assume all around me is not real I need to settle with some basic believes:
1. I exist in a physical form called 'human'
2. People around me are real and exists too
3. The world around me exists as I can perceive it (see, hear, smell, ...)

Without those basic assumptions there is no need to do anything. Just jump from a building, as nothing exists! However, if you do not believe other people are real, why responding to questions and comments in the first place in this Forum?

Experiments to test the temperature, pressure, and altitude was done at the two locations in the experiment and were found to be identical.

What about atmospheric conditions inbetween the two points of measurement? What about mirages?

Can you specify a mathematical formula describing refraction of light in air?

46
What about mirages you can see on hot days on a street or road? Isn't that the effect of light bending traveling through air with considerable temperature differences?

47
If I understand this quotation right, there is no bending of light in air. Do I understand that correct?

Flat Earth Theory / South Pole
« on: May 19, 2015, 10:47:37 AM »
I have one more question:

Does the South Pole exists in the flat earth theory?

If not, what about the people claiming to have been to the South Pole? Do the all deliberately lie on behalf of a great conspiracy?

Benjamin Franklin: do you indicate that all people (including scientists) claimed to have crossed Antarctica are not telling the truth? If this is the case, do they all lie on purpose?

50
Hi,

I have to admit you are right. My calculations were wrong.

But did those measurements did include refraction of light due to temperature changes close to the water's surface? The same effect to seeing a mirage on a hot roads surface!

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Vanishing posts
« on: May 19, 2015, 09:04:05 AM »
Hi,

I am a bit worried. I always try to focus on the given topic, while many, many other posts get astray and post material which does not contribute to the specific topic. I can give you some examples if you like.

For example I ask a question and get a discussion on some misspelled word, not contributing the the actual topic. This I would consider a violation of rule #6.

I cannot see I have violated this rule! But I will take care...

Hi David,

very nice webpage and very educative. But does the page not assume the earth is round?

Suggestions & Concerns / Angry ranting?
« on: May 19, 2015, 08:52:58 AM »
Why do some of my comments to posts end up in "Angry ranting"? This is strange, and if this is done deliberately, it supresses a free communication in this forum.

I would consider this a personal insult, which is not allowed, according to the Forum rules.

If I have violated the forum rules, I would like to know on which basis, so I can avoid it in the future.

Thank you.

Hi Matthew,

I think I replied to your question, but maybe there was a technical issue.

Maybe you have the change to talk to an astronaut who can tell you his experience. Or you could try to become an astronaut yourself! Then you can find out reality for yourself.

But, honestly, according to my knowledge and experience, the earth is round!

Suggestions & Concerns / Vanishing posts

Hello,

I have the feeling that posts or replies to other post are vanishing. Is my observation correct? Where can I find a list of all posts or comments?

Is anyone able to answer my question?

Flat Earth Theory / Strange article: The Bedford Canal experiment
« on: May 19, 2015, 07:38:36 AM »
On the TFES Wiki I found two articles:

http://www.sacred-texts.com/earth/za/za00.htm
http://wiki.tfes.org/Lady_Blount_Trials

which puzzles me. In chapter II of the work, "EXPERIMENTS DEMONSTRATING THE TRUE FORM OF STANDING WATER, AND PROVING THE EARTH TO BE A PLANE." the statement that an earth with circumference of  25,000 English statute miles would show a declination of 8 inches in the first statute mile. This statement is bluntly incorrect!

Over a distance of 6 miles the declination really is 2.18 mm. So, if the telescope is 2 feet(!) above the water, sure you can see the distant flag to the bottom. This experiment does not prove the earth is flat!

I can show the math for this very simple derivation, if someone needs to see it...

I believe evidence that can be observed is a major part of science.

I agree with that. But one has to be careful to draw conclusions from observations.

For example I observe that it is raining, and the streets get wet. This does not mean that if the streets get wet it is raining.  There is maybe just a pipe burst.

Or for example, I see my colleague at work, and I conclude he exists. It does not mean that if I cannot see my colleague he does not exist. Or that other people do not exist, although I never saw them. I never saw Barack Obama with my own eyes, this does not mean he does not exist.

Or, for example, I see the world around me flat. This does not mean that the whole world is flat. Maybe its just because I am small and the world is so huge...

What is 'observable evidence'? It's not scientific, though...?

'Bendy light' is a slang that describes a hypothetical phenomenon in order to bend light to fit to someone's theory. However, I am not aware of a fully described theory that explains self-contained all effects seen with light.
