Flat Earth Community / Re: Suggestion for experiment: Lake Pontchartrain
« on: January 24, 2016, 12:09:59 PM »
Thanks Rayzor, I agree.
I think a definitive experiment would involve a laser and theodolite side by side.
What do you think about the design of the experiment? Any flaws?

I think it sounds pretty good,  the only thing I'd perhaps change would be to set the measurement points at a fixed height above the water rather than referencing the road surface.   The aim of the experiment is to measure if the surface of the water is curved or flat.   If it's flat and all the points are the same height above the water, then looking through the theodolite, they will all lie along a straight line.   If it's curved then the ones in the intermediate locations will be higher.

Getting the laser focussed to produce a small enough dot at the end point might be tricky,  depends on the laser being used I guess?

You don't especially need a laser,  you just need a good theodolite.   Ask your local surveyor.

Linked from other thread.

Maybe it's time to get serious about trying to fix the map.

The flat earth community is gaining converts at the expense of quality,  the typical youtube flat earther has seen a few youtube videos and finds something that resonates with his/her mindset without much real knowledge of the flat earth theory.   This forum and this group,  is probably the only repository of "real" flat earth knowledge and theory,  but appears to be doing nothing to educate the new converts.

Where are the quality flat earth youtube videos,  has anyone here ever made one?  The knowledge is here, but hiding behind the club doors.

I'd like to see Tom Bishop,  or Sandokhan make a few videos,  add a video section to the wiki.

We should also remember that there are several maps that include two poles, and that distance is not the only determining factor for how long it takes to complete a journey. It could be that the accelerator for the Earth speeds up motion at the rim, or that rotational forces move faster the further out you are. Jet streams are common knowledge.

I don't think distances work properly on the bipolar map either,  and I couldn't see the sun and moon paths working on a bipolar map,   maybe someone has worked it out.

EA is probably best left to another thread.

You could refute it by showing me a flat earth map that works for the southern hemisphere.

Actually,  on further thought,  I'll amend that statement.

Since the globe map distances work correctly,  and further since it's impossible to map a globe directly to a flat surface without distortion, then it follows that it is logically impossible to produce a flat earth map that measures distances correctly.   So a flat earth map is impossible.

Ergo the earth is not flat.

On the other hand,  if the earth really was flat, then producing a two dimensional map of the whole earth with correct distances would be trivial,  at least compared to a globe.

Obviously this isn't possible on a flat earth model, you would need to make a huge detour to go anywhere near Antarctica. Has anyone got any thoughts on this?
They are fake or nebulous half-truths at best.

There is no need to over-think this.  They faked and continue to fake space travel.  Why is faking Antarctica so hard to fathom??

Nope,  the simpler solution is to come up with a proper flat earth map, that somewhat resembles reality.  If the earth is flat, it should be much easier than a globe map.

Now find a flight going the "long way" around the earth so we can tell how big the earth is and whether it matches up to your ball model.

Yep, it does.

Oh that settles it.  "Go find a flight going the long way and see if it matches your model!"  You: "It does!"

Nice.  How can we possibly refute such strong evidence?  ::)

You could refute it by showing me a flat earth map that works for the southern hemisphere.

Yep, it does.

The Google Earth great circle distances are a reasonable match for all the flight paths I checked,   flight times might vary more because of jet streams,  but nothing substantial.

Why not just admit that the popular flat earth map,  that people like "Zetetic Flat Earth" are using is wrong?

We all know a real flat earth map doesn't exist.  After 200 years,  you'd think someone might have advanced the cause.

PS.  Nina's crazy thought processes are yet another example of  the "Zetetic Method"

Actually, those are NOT real flight arrival and departure times. These are estimates for future flights, generated by a third party travel company.

Actually,  if you take the trouble to go to the FIDS systems and look at the actual departure and arrival times,  they are mostly a reasonable match for the scheduled departure and arrivals.

As an example here is that SAA223 flight,  landed over 2 hours ago.    Departed GRU 18:54 scheduled 18:30   Arrived JNB 07:12 scheduled 07:10

Here is an example of the flat earth thinking on this topic.

This video in particular by Nina aka "Zetetic Flat Earth"  (  Restricted in some countries, If it doesn't come up on YT, it's also on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/138874902 )

Start watching at 11:20 since it has specific flight time information is worth looking at further.

The video author has obviously never bought international tickets and doesn't understand the one free stop option.    This is where you buy a ticket from Johannesburg  to Sao Paulo,  and you can nominate a single stop over, which you get to choose from whatever options are available, in this case one of the options is to fly BA and spend a few days in London.

Why not read the lines above where it clearly says SAA offers a direct flight.  Or even notice the little inset map, which shows the flight route?

Instead of trying to find out why you would fly to London,  the video author with pre-conceived notions in mind starts a train of thought that is just plain stupid, suggesting that this is the round earth way to fly from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo  ..  WTF?

And then goes on to point out that the flat earth model using the Gleason map, makes more sense..  well no it doesn't  just goes to show how stupid the author is.

Here is the real flight path on Google Earth.

And here are the real flight arrival and departure times.

Sao Paulo is UTC-3:00 and Johannesburg is UTC+2:00 ,  so departs at 9:00PM UTC and arrives 5:25AM the following morning,  that's  8 hours 25 minutes flying time.

If I'm being generous I'm guessing the author of the video has made an honest mistake,  I can sympathize,  but it is so easy to check these sort of facts before going to commit to a video,  for that sake of the hundreds of gullible fools who will just accept it as being true and so the misinformation and the lies propagate.

rayzor, Rowbotham, Winship, Lady Blount are great historical references, however today we have at our disposal fresh material, such as FE Experiments' lighthouse seen in Spain over a distance of some 31 km.

I always find your posts and research interesting, and worth following.   I'll be interested in following your chronology another day.

Here is a plot of theoretical lighthouse visibility distances compared with flat earth claims.

Whoever made the claims that they should not be visible,  (Eric Dubay, copying Rowbotham) didn't know how to do the calculations.

What I'm looking for is a documented example of something that is visible at a greater distance than the earth's curvature predicts, where proper care has been taken to establish a sight line, and allow for refraction.    I haven't found one,  and I don't believe one exists.

Whenever a geodetic survey is done, the earth's curvature is exactly what it should be.

It would seem that you're either confused or dishonest. It is indeed correct that multiple people performed the experiment, and that their results weren't 100% consistent. This is hardly uncommon when controversial subjects are discussed. However, a peer review performed by Blount et al. sufficiently closed the case.

Would you prefer that we hadn't mentioned RE'ers performing the same experiment and disagreeing? There is no satisfying you people - when we're open and honest, you twist our words and go for the lowest common denominator of arguments - "Aha! Your source mentions a Round Earther, therefore the Earth must be round!"

Get the fuck out of here.

No need for insults.   So are you now saying Henry Yule Oldham's experiment wasn't definitive?

In any event, you are missing the critical point,  and that is every time the experiment is done with proper regard to establishing sight lines and being aware of refraction,  the answer is always that the earth is curved.

The fact that Rowbotham chose to ignore this and in fact deliberately set out to maximize the effect by having his telescope a mere 8" above the water, would tell any reasonable person that Rowbotham was trying to rig the results.   The height of intellectual dishonesty,  and sadly typical of the Zetetic method.

Throwing insults and red herrings does nothing to advance your argument.

....Crickets.....

Please refrain from low-content posting in the upper fora. What is it you want? The only question within your last double post was regarding the mechanism behind the UA and bending light. The simple answer for that is dark energy. The more complicated answer is that we still do not know.

My apologies,   perhaps you could enlighten me as to what is the benchmark for "low content"    Is it the number of words,  the implied meaning,  the depth of the question or something else.

.... crickets ...     is full of meaning, and depth,  but lacking in number of words.

I'll take the "We don't know"  as the definitive answer,   I suspect  Sandokhan might have a different view.

Flat Earth Community / Re: Flat Earth Elementary Schools

I feel that FET should be taught in elementary school as an alternative to the accepted theory.  It's an alternative viewpoint that is gaining a lot of support in the twenty-first century and children should know that if they believe in their hearts that the Earth is not a whirling ball there are people out there who share that opinion.  They need to know they're not alone.  I know it's not mainstream to be accepting of such alternative viewpoints at the moment, but if our educational leaders are at least willing to acknowledge our existence it would be a step in the right direction and who knows, maybe, someday, far off in the future, FET will be the mainstream, because some educators today were willing to show an open mind.  That is my dream.  But I suppose I'm an idealist.

Agreed.

I am solidly in the RE camp,  but I think FE theory should be taught in schools,   clear thinking and logical reasoning  are essential life skills.

I don't see how flying along the rim of Antarctica negates the flat-earth theory. Such a trip would be possible, regardless of the earth's shape. On a flat map, one merely skirts the edge, which may be thousands of miles thick.

The problem for FE theory is more to do with distance travelled.   Especially those who got fooled by the "azimuthal equidistant projection"  or Gleason map.

Of course some versions of the FE model have Antarctica as a continent,  the bipolar model for example.

It's an insoluble problem for the flat earth theorists,  although they will never admit it, and go to quite ridiculous lengths to circumvent it.
