Suggestions & Concerns / favicons
« on: May 15, 2018, 07:55:16 PM »
Just a small observation.

The favicon for the forum is the correct one and matches the site theme. But on the homepage, wiki, and library, we have the old favicon. It just makes it look like the site isn't all the same. A small 2 min change, I'm sure, but its been that way forever and I guess if no on ever mentions it it won't be updated.

Also I don't know if you can change the favicon on the cafe press shop, but that doesn't match either.

Technology & Information / Muh heatpipes
« on: May 04, 2018, 07:14:31 PM »
So my PC arrived.

4k AIO
Ryzen 1400
8gb RAM @2600Mhz
128gb ssd
1Tb hdd
8Gb rx580
Wondows 10

Disappointments ... lets get those out of the way.

1. Dell supplied the PC with 2x4Gb sticks of RAM. Dual channel doesn't make much difference for most things. I'd rather they gave me 1x8Gb and then if I wanted more RAM, I could buy a single 8gb stick and add it. Now if I want 16gb I have to buy a full 16gb. So Thork you very much for that Dell.
2. ... no, I'm all out.

Bonuses

1. It arrived with no crapware on it. I don't know if it had its brains scrabbled when they refurbished it, but no McAfee, no stupid games, nothing that wants to ring Dell and report my data ... just wondows.
2. It is in mint condition. Not a scratch, a smudge, no fingerprints on the screen. It is new. I worried being refurbished what that might mean as to the prior owner, but it looks like they just sent the box back without even opening it. It could just be Dell wanting to shift a bit of stock. I've no idea but its brand new and I saved almost 50% on it. Well worth the risk in this case.
3. Came with a sturdy little mouse that has a mouse wheel. I am not going to use it, but knowing I have one and Parsifal would like one can be chalked up as a little bonus.

Surprises

1. The 4k screen is epic. I know I only bought a PC because I wanted a 4k screen, but now I have one ... even on this site the text is so crisp, the logo is sharp ... and I can see where I came from because the smileys are like little smudges at this point. Its like I popped on some glasses and now everything is so smooth. I thought I may have scaling issues but haven't encountered any so far ... I think the world is now ready for 4k where as 3 years ago 4k would have been a ball ache.
2. Holy crap that rx580 is a beast. So much more graphics card than I wanted, but really nice to have. Forza 7 runs really well and I'm just downloading the Witcher 3. Yes, its an older game but I haven't played many games in the last 10 years. Pretty much all games are new to me. It doesn't seem cut down in any way. Comparing benchmarks on things like Heaven 4.0 it runs exactly as you'd expect any other stock rx580 to run ... so I'm guessing it just pulls as much power as it wants.
3. Quieter than I anticipated. I thought I would take a hit in the sound department, but during everyday work its like having a baby rabbit sleeping on the desk. Playing games is a different story. It really ramps up but isn't so loud as to ruin the sound of the game. The machine deals with the heat really well and the fan stops pumping so hard the instant you take the load off the machine and the back is still cool to the touch. The CPU and GPU temps stay as cool as any desktop I've seen those parts in.
4. I was thinking of getting an NVMe drive for the boot drive because I had one in my last PC. To be honest the ssd in this although slower isn't really noticeable in general use. Everything boots instantly. I'm not even going to bother.

I had the wasted half day of loading MS office, getting my mail accounts on it, putting all my favourite software on there, putting all the settings how I like them, doing all the updates, adding my NAS drive etc ... but now its all done this is by far the best computer I have ever owned by some distance. I didn't really need a new computer and thought I'd be tinged with buyers remorse, but for £719 I think I got an absolute steal.

Oh, and I picked a name. She is called Adele ... because that's what she is.

Technology & Information / Ordered a new computer
« on: April 25, 2018, 03:51:21 PM »
So wanted a new computer. Actually I wanted a 4k monitor, and that was £400-£600 so thought to hell with it, I'll get an AIO.

Opted for a Dell Inspiron 27 7775.

Ryzen 1400
RX 580
8 GB DDR4 2400 Ram
128 Gb SSD
1TB HDD
Wireless card
Wondows 10
27" UHD (3840x2160) display
Shitty mouse and keyboard that I won't use.

(Click for big)

Total cost: £714.

The screen and GPU are worth about that on their own so pretty happy with the deal. I'll use it mostly for light work (Excel, web design, browsing, watching youtube), I might buy some games but 1080p is enough for me and I prefer less demanding games like e-sports titles and Tekken ... that kind of thing. This is more than enough machine for me ... it needs a name ... I'm not sure about that yet.

Suggestions & Concerns / Height parameter is broken
« on: March 19, 2018, 08:39:00 PM »
Hi,

If I add an image, I can specify its width. I cannot however specify its height.

Exhibit A
An image in its natural form.

Exhibit B
The same image shrunk to a width of 150px

Exhibit C
The same image with me attempting to control the height to 150px using the same technique as exhibit B, but it failing.

Cheers.

Flat Earth Investigations / deGrasse Tyson cashing in on FET again.
« on: March 19, 2018, 08:10:29 PM »

People often ask us if we make much money out of flat earth. We don't make any. You want to follow the money trail? Look at this guy. He's just written another book, he has an entire chapter on rotundity. So who profits from telling you what shape the earth is?

Where's our royalties, Tyson?  >o<

Suggestions & Concerns / Protecting IP addresses from google
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:05:13 PM »
I'm aware this site uses google analytics. That's fine.

But it is possible to shovel data to google anonymising the user's IP address by turning the last 3 digits into a 0 before google get their nosey hands on it.

https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2763052?hl=en

How to do this.

Being as TFES is a bastion of free speech, open source, creative licenses and user anonymity ... this quick change may fall in line more closely with the values of the site. We could then update our privacy policy to reflect this extra protection given to users.

Suggestions & Concerns / Push notifications
« on: January 16, 2018, 12:47:41 AM »
Well this is ambitious.

It is a suggestion ... it is difficult and will likely be met with ridicule, but here goes.

When you are on the forums you might leave a tab open on your browser. I do this whilst I have other tabs open and I do other things. It would be nice if like Facebook, whenever someone replies to a post or PMs me, I get a little silent notification to tell me something has happened. What I don't like is having to click on the browser, refresh the window, see no one cares about my thoughts and wait another hour or so before I push it again.

There are the little circle icons that appear, but you can also get push notifications and they could be easier to implement, and an option in your TFES settings. Just a little message that says
Quote
TFES Notification                                                         {x}
You have a Private Message from Parsifal
or
Quote
TFES Notification
"Parsifal replied to 'Coriolis is bunk'                                              {x}
"Baby Thork doesn't know what he is talkin ..."

I feel this would go someway towards alleviating the crushing disappointment that a refresh brings when no one replies, and also would allow conversations to flow quicker. If I'm only checking once an hour and you replied after 5 mins, the chances are you got bored and left with no reply before I even noticed I had a reply.

Suggestions & Concerns / Youtube needs tweaking
« on: January 03, 2018, 03:09:21 PM »
If you put a video in as below, it doesn't take into account the start time.

I've given a 5 second start time, but it defaults to playing from the start. This can be difficult when wishing to draw someone's attention to a particular part of a video, especially FE videos that can be an hour long on youtube. Is this fixable?

Suggestions & Concerns / 7th son of God.

I would ask that the hand of God comes down swiftly and smites the 7th son of God around the back of the ear for a week.

Arts & Entertainment / Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) - contains spoilers
« on: December 16, 2017, 04:46:18 PM »
*Spoilers covered up*

I went to see this yesterday, with some trepidation, I might add. I've been burned by the Star Wars franchise many times with Jar Jar, overdone CGi, weird story-lines and perversions of the original narrative.

As the yellow text scrolled up an the beginning, I could feel my scrotum scrunching my balls up. Why do I allow them to raise my hopes and then piss on them time and time again? I've never really enjoyed any of the remakes. Why would this one be different?

Well, actually it was. It is by far the most true to the original I have seen. The story line was pretty solid, we were back to muppets instead of CGI characters, it held onto the original elements of the saga rather than the Disney bastardisations, the new ships matched the old ships, the Jedi powers weren't straight up weird (but for one but that is a spoiler - Laia floating about space), and it just felt like an old school star wars. It had a little more humour written in, but that didn't ruin it.

It is the first one since the 80's that I would say "Go and see, it won't upset you".
