Is Flat Earth a Movement or a Theory?
« on: March 30, 2020, 11:17:06 PM »
I've recently seen a Flat Earth trend in describing Flat Earth as a movement. (i.e. from Pete)

But, in other descriptions such as this site and Wiki, it is described as a theory.

A movement is very different than a theory and so just wanted to check.

I don't see why it can't be both.

Movement:
a group of people working together to advance their shared ideas.

Then I think the phrase flat earth movement is an appropriate thing to say based on the definition above.

Theory:
a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something

Then I think the phrase flat earth Theory is ALSO an appropriate thing to say based on the definition above.

The scientific content of the Flat Earth is the theory.
The push for the use of science to become more focused on finding the truth and not holding up tradition is the movement.

They're two parts of something larger.
My DE model explained here.
Open to questions, but if you're curious start there rather than expecting me to explain it all from scratch every time.

In other shocking news, the communist party is not the same as communism.

Flat Earth is not "referred to" as a movement or theory. There exists a movement and a theory which refer to Flat Earth. You're trying too hard to "gotcha" us, and it's not working out.

Obviously the two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. There is a Flat Earth movement based around Flat Earth Theory.
Dr. Frank is a physicist. He says it's impossible. So it's impossible.
My friends, please remember Tom said this the next time you fall into the trap of engaging him, and thank you. :)

But a disproved theory cannot also be a theory.
