Flat Earth Theory / Re: Is it possible to prove a negative?

Yes.  And they do this by showing reported evidence and explaining why this evidence is not genuine.  It is that simple.  They need to make atleast some effort more Than, well there is no evidence in my closet so therefore ghosts don't exist.
Isn't that what Tom does? The usual RE'er response to that approach is "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence".

but still take their Christmas vacation
Speak for yourself. I'd much rather work on (and around) the 25th of December and get paid for those days.

You can already ignore users. Why do we need an extra button for those too lazy to do it the normal way? We are adding loads of great features. Lets not clutter the site up with redundant buttons.
Hmm, the mod I found online adds this to the bottom:

Personally, I don't think that would contribute to the clutter. It lets you ignore people without leaving the thread, and brings you right back to where you were. I don't notice that section of posts unless I'm consciously looking for it. However, it doesn't matter to me either way, and I agree that ignoring is easy enough as it is. Anyone with opinions about this, please speak your mind.

If you go to Profile-Forum Profile-Actions there are two options. 'Delete account' and 'Check this member'. What does 'Check this member' do? It requires a password which makes me scared.
That should not be visible to non-admins. Thanks for letting me know. It's not a big issue, given that it won't let you do anything, but we should probably hide that link at some point.

"Check this member" allows us to check a member against the StopForumSpam database - one of our lines of defence against spambots :)

How about a button to ignore/unignore users under their posts, next to "report to moderator"? I'm asking because there's already a working modification for that, so I could just install that and not have to do any work :P

Over here it's not easy money.

It's not any money. That's the beauty of the NHS, I don't get mugged for cash once a year so the doctor can tell me I'm still 5ft 7inches tall and 10stone.
Are you suggesting that British doctors don't get paid? They still get money, they just don't get it (directly) from you. It goes from you to the government to the NHS to the doctor.

They actually are different colours. In your screenshot, you're on page 13, which is black, as opposed to all the poop-green ones which are links. That said, I can see how it could be difficult to see to some. I'll try to make it clearer.

Also, that reminds me, didn't someone raise an issue with that theme being harsh on colourblind people? Tusk, if I remember correctly? We could look at that too.

I don't see a Zetetic Council board in my list.
That's because there isn't one. I'm not sue what Thork is talking about; perhaps he means the election board that's still kicking around, which will be merged with the Council board once that comes to be.

We're still waiting for Councillors' comments in this thread: http://forum.tfes.org/index.php?topic=1054.msg11469#msg11469

Could anyone powerful enough that is bothered move all these posts into a Fallout thread? Or just change the title of the thread?
Just so you know, you can rename threads yourself. The subject of the first post is also the subject of the thread :)

I think the ducks are cute. I like seaport/bay artwork.
I like them too. If I was going to Taiwan, I'd probably include them in my "to see" list.

« on: January 01, 2014, 11:52:23 PM »
Looking at some of the threads in CN that are well over 10 pages, the new style really doesn't work well with those. As the site grows, there will be more threads that reach that length, so I don't really see it as a good permanent solution.
Yup:

EDIT: I just realised how terrible this will be if a thread/board grows too much. Definitely just a temporary solution.

Announcements / Parsifal will be less active for a while
« on: January 01, 2014, 06:36:17 PM »
Parsifal is now on his way to the very other end of Australia to attend a conference. As such, you can expect him to be much less active for about 3 weeks. This should not cause any major disruptions, but it does mean we may be a bit slower to implement changes for a while.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Previous/next page buttons please
« on: January 01, 2014, 05:39:20 PM »
Well, that was already an option. Apparently, SMF has two modes of displaying page links:

  • one that displays an untruncated list of all pages with arrows, e.g. « 1 2 3 4 5 »
  • one that tries to truncate the pages like 1 ... 5 and has no arrows

The truncating behaviour breaks for people who don't have JavaScript enabled, so I consider getting rid of this to be a benefit. Then again, it might get problematic with very long threads. We'll see how it works, and if it gets annoying, I'll look at hacking the two modes together. For the time being, the little arrows will now take you back and forth.

EDIT: I just realised how terrible this will be if a thread/board grows too much. Definitely just a temporary solution.

Hmm, that should be easy enough. I'd probably keep the Go Up/Go Down buttons, as I expect some people might be using them, but adding a Next/Previous link is a good idea. We'll look into it.

I thought about backing it on Kickstarter when it was raising funds, but I was pretty broke at the time. Other than the AI issues, is it any good?

Sounds like it makes policing more efficient and reduces the amount of bad policing. I don't really see a reason why not.
