Saw some pictures of models with waterfalls and now I'm curious. And if there are waterfalls, can we make power from them? And where does additional water come from?

Flat Earth Theory / How far up in the air can we get on the Flat Earth?
« on: December 24, 2020, 02:16:43 PM »
Can we get beyond the dome and the stars? Just curious what's the furthest away we can theoretically get from the ground to do things like photographs of the Earth in the future.

The star map will look different depending on your latitude, and include different stars. Two good sites with star maps are https://staratlas.com/ and https://www.heavens-above.com/ . You can check their accuracy by comparing the night sky at your location with the data they provide.

I wish you the best of luck in your project, but I don't see how you could make that work with a flat earth and account for the fact we see different stars at different latitudes. I'd be very curious to see the final result.

Thanks for your feedback, this is great!

Another reassuring insight into the growth of the Flat Earth Theory worldwide. In line with similar studies from other countries, a Datafolha Institute survey found that approximately 7% of the population of Brazil now follow some flavour of the Flat Earth Theory.

sorry to restart the thread, but as someone who has a brazilian family this really warms my heart :)

Flat Earth Media / Re: Trending on youtube front page

A highly polished hit piece. The irony being, that it will only fuel flat earth theory.  :D

It's a real shame that people put so much work into the presentation but so little work into the research..

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Notifications
« on: January 31, 2020, 05:59:57 PM »
I think that would be difficult to implement well in SMF, and I'd be reluctant to implement it poorly.

With many people not using quote tags properly, or not using them at all, a functionality like this could lead to missed notifications if one were to rely on it. We could try and implement something along the lines of "if a quote tag is used and it explicitly references a post ID that belongs to you, we notify you in some way", but things would quickly get messy if we tried to encompass the different ways in which people engage with the forum.

I think your best bet is to use the "new replies" functionality. This would normally track replies to any threads you're active in (and with Parsfial's modifications you can subscribe/unsubscribe from threads). It's not exactly what you're asking for, but at least it can be expected to be reliable.

Thank you so much for the new replies link! I'm new here and it was very helpful.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Dark forum theme
« on: January 31, 2020, 05:55:52 PM »
Without being too cynical, the only way this will happen is if you play a major role in creating the theme. A somewhat organic consequence of the model we're operating under means that doers get what they want much more often than askers.

Honestly I think this is the only sustainable long term solution

Hey, all!  :) My name is Ray and I love VR, bowling & science. I'm currently working on a Virtual Reality project that lets people fly around the Earth in its full glory... I think it would be awesome to give people a more visceral experience of what it's like to see our world from up there but I also want to make it as realist as possible.

I spent a few days working on this 3D model of the Earth and I think it's a good start. I'd love to get your feedback on how I could make this better. (Sorry about the bad camera, I lost my right hand recently and I'm still getting used to my left..  :-[

Additionally, does anyone here have good references of accurate star maps I can use? I want to start working on the sky but I'm having a hard time finding resources in the forums... even better if it's a high-resolution image!  :-B

Thanks so much guys and please be nice, this is my first VR project and I'm only 17.
