Michael Schumacher thread
« on: January 22, 2014, 11:06:30 PM »
I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up on the forums.

For those in America who don't realise there are countries outside of the USA, Michael Schumacher is the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time. He was always my favourite driver as I grew up.

Anyway, he had a skiing accident a few weeks ago and is now in a coma. Its not looking very good. Doctors think he may never be able to talk or move again, and he may just be trapped in his own body. Poor guy.

I wonder if this will be more far-reaching as his plight continues. He was a very active guy and I don't think he'd want to spend his life with locked in syndrome or worse, in a persistent vegetative state. I suspect (Thork's prediction coming up) that this will completely reopen the right to die issues we have in Europe and his being so famous will make it a landmark case with permanent repercussions as his family go to the European Court of Human Rights.

I'd like to be wrong and see him make a full recovery, but I'm not reading any reports that suggest this might be the case. :(

Have Americans heard about this?
Does anyone think he'll be ok? :(
What do you think about the right to die?

This is more about the ethics of right to die. Please put it back.

Looks to me like you want to discuss Michael Schumacher first, and the ethics involving his case second. If this is going to be anything like the Justin Bieber thread, it belongs here. If not, I'll move it back.

I heard about this, but forgot about it as my mind became consumed with tennis and football.

Right to die is being RE-opened in Canada as well and I hope it becomes lawful. I think as long as some suitable regulations can control its permission then it is a way to alleviate suffering and misery.

Americans don't understand racing that involves making more than one turn.

I've never heard of him either, but I don't follow any type of racing. I find it to be rather boring.

As for the right-to-die issue, I believe all adults of sound mental health should be able to have the right to end their own life in instances of severe health issues. For example, if Steven Hawkings wants to die once his disease has made him unable to live his life, and expresses those wishes now, he should be allowed to die on his own terms.
You don't think I'm going to post here sober, do you?  ???

I have embraced my Benny Franko side. I'm sleazy.

I heard about it the day of. I have an F1 RSS feed on my phone. I don't often get to watch the races, because there's precious little coverage if you're not watching live, and I don't feel like staying up til 2am to watch a race.
That being said, I hope he pulls through, and anyone should have the right to kill themselves.

I don't know what you're implying, but you're probably wrong.

I doubt it will become an "issue". Worst comes to worst he'll be settled in an expensive private hospital in Germany where he'll do whatever he needs to do out of sight of the press.

I thought this was going to be another steroids thread until I opened it.

With the new, lower, weight restrictions, steroids would be inadvisable in F1.

Because they don't run around much.
