Title: I Hate Linux Distros
Post by: juner on January 20, 2015, 04:51:42 AM
They are literally the worst. Now that the sensationalism is out of the way, I am going to bitch and moan. To be honest, it really isn't the fault of Linux or even any Unix-type system. I live out of my MacBook, but I am no ParsiBSD. The only time I am in the command line is for scripting or configuring various network routers and switches. And the only time I screw around with other *nix systems is when Parsinix is on IRC talking about some new thing he is doing. I run a 99.5% Windows server shop on vSphere and Dell hardware.

We have a massive (for us) new software package being implemented. 7 app servers behind a load balancer with a variety of database and web servers in the mix. They all run Windows, except this one shitty server. The vendor was supposed to handle the configuration, but they turned out to be more incompetent than I could have anticipated. It is a web server of sorts. The only info I had was the IP which was the one thing the vendor didn't screw up. After finally getting the login credentials I was able to SSH in. I had no idea what distro, what web server was running or any other detail. After recalling what I thought were forgotten skills, I identified a system running RHEL 6 and some old shitty version of Tomcat. It needed an SSL cert. So I dicked around using a horrible process to generate a keystore and then a CSR. I got the cert, ran the nonsensical commands to instal the cert and restarted the web server. Then I had to dump the VM in the DMZ (to keep people like Pizaa out of my network) and do a bunch of shitty network config.

Jesus Christ the process is so much simpler on Windows server running IIS. And also not vulnerable to Heartbleed. If you made it this far, I am sorry. tl;dr

I found your problem.

Yeah, that is what was grinding my gears for the most part.

I'm using Ubuntu with the Plasma desktop environment. Shit's kind of cash.

Ok it's not cash. I realize the GUI is kind of an afterthought in Linux, but this looks like they picked a random person shopping at Walmart to design it.

Imagine installing bloated shitware and then complaining that you're using bloated shitware.

How am I supposed to know that beforehand? Usually people learn by trying things.

I hate MS Windows! When is this fucked up planet going to get its shit together and move to a Linux platform!

OK... I feel better now.

Every iteration of Windows pisses me off more and more. People who won't show their source code want my email address just to boot up their OS. They make it harder every year to run a Windows machine without a Microsoft account.             F00k dat.

I rip Cortana out of the registry, delete and kill it but it still sends spam to my inbox. I don't need malware emailing me to 'Have a great Thursday!'

Oh! and BTW, that 'free' Windows 10 upgrade is shit! It's a 32 bit version of Windows 10. WTF! What idiot thinks we need or want a 32 bit version of any Windows anymore! And this punk-ass version is still packed with garbageware constipating my system.

In every new version, they take out features I use and add crap I will never use.

Many of the new Linux distros have polished GUIs that will allow even the most tech-illiterate primate to find porn and order crap on Amazon. I would have switched every computer in my life to Linux except that most of the world only speaks 'Windows'. There are so many hardware peripherals I use that won't interact with Linux that I'm stuck with Windows. Microsoft has me by the balls and I hate them for it.

I don't use my email to log into windows.  I use a local account.
Cortana is off and I don't get cortana emails into my gmail.
I got the 64 bit free upgrade.  Not sure why you didn't.

Linux is a collection of 200 people who decided to make an OS by themselves and hope it works together.  Its an ungodly mess of cobbled together shit that barely works with one distro version and may work with others, unless the person maintaining it decides to change it for no reason.

There is no QA.  No standardization.  You have as many repositories as distros.

Most Linux distros are crap because they're made by people who don't work together.

I think Microsoft may be fucking with me personally and specifically. There's this shit in the TOS about not using Microsoft products to mess with Microsoft. That's why they want you to have an account they can watch. Years ago, I reposted a Bill Gates meme and ever since, every Windows upgrade and update has screwed me over.

I dare say, the issue seems to be your friend in that case. The rest of your post is quite the hot take that seems to be built on the idea that Linux is some sort of monolithic entity that just sucks at working as a team. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but it appears to be stacked upon some ideas that don't really hold universally. At least not anymore... the Linux scene of 20 years ago is a different story entirely. I remember installing Yellow Dog on an old iMac. That was a mess.

Arguing about which of Windows or Linux is better is like trying to decide whether to order a shit sandwich or a turd burger.

No, they recently changed the installer so that if you install with a network connection, you have to use a Microsoft account. If you don't know about this in advance, the installer also won't let you go back and deconfigure your network to avoid that step. But if you already have an existing installation, you don't get forcibly "upgraded" (as far as I know).

That just sounds like user error. Most web servers and IoT devices run on Linux. I reinstall Windows from time to time, but that's because I have random shit all over the place that I don't want to manually clean up. That's not the fault of the OS.

You mean OpenSuse? He's doing something wrong.

Suse is mostly focused on the enterprise server market. It's pretty stable and easy to upgrade. OpenSuse is more community supported than the enterprise version, and it is still easy to upgrade and pretty stable from what I've seen although I haven't used it nearly as much as some other distros.

If you really mean Seus, I'm entirely unfamiliar with what that might be.

Yeah, that.  OpenSuse.

Also driver support is shit.  Like half the time when we chat via google hangouts, he had to restart it because his camera came up with bad colors.

IMO it depends on who's looking at your CV. A random HR drone might not know any better and just count whatever exams you've listed. A technically-minded person will be more impressed if you say you can cook.

Yeah, it wasn't that difficult, even for someone with hardly any linux background. Although, since I don't have any paid IT experience, my thinking is that the benefit it would provide on a resume is greater than 0.

I've turned down 3 IT jobs at this point. I think I just like stacking certs and working at my comfy Socialist government job. But for real, I had a 2nd interview today with a managed security service provider and I think I'll take it.

Yep, I'm doing the Security + exam, probably late December, Early January. Not for anything specific now, just for down the road.

I want to do Pentest + because it looks like fun. The performance based questions are like little CTF challenges.

I have a whole pile of computer certs (including Security+ ).  Some I needed for the last job I had before retirement.  The problem with stacking them is that they kind of 'expire'.  If you are not using the material the certs cover then you will forget a bunch after a while.  If the certs cover technology that becomes outdated then they are kind of worthless too.  After 3 or 4 years a lot of stuff has advanced and unless you keep taking tests every year or two you will fall behind.

The newest version is a real pain in the ass. The two study guides I used were 150 pages long each, and they were supposed to be the condensed versions of the information.

Right!   I should have done the 501 version of the test last year. It was way easier.

I want to get it done as soon as possible before it gets any worse. In the next two years, it could double in size again.

I finally decided to accept a job at an MSSP. Their official requirements were 3 years work experience in IT and a BS in computer science or IT. I don't have any of those yet. Do these companies just put really high requirements and hope someone more qualified will take the bait?

That's really encouraging. I'm going to be leaving my current job in a couple of years and want to make my "red team hobby" into my full time job.

I think certifications are starting to carry as much weight as college degrees. I run a small manufacturing facility and I do all the IT in the building including managing half of the corporate VPN. If I had to hire someone to do the IT part of my job, a person with some Cisco and Microsoft certs would be in a much better position to hit the ground running than a fresh graduate with just a BS in computer science.

When I get into IT full time, I'm assuming that I will be competing with bright, young people who have degrees and certs. But hopefully, I can pitch my certs, my real world experience and almost twenty years of experience managing websites to get something cool. Also, without a bunch of student debt, I can beat them out with a cheaper salary requirement.

Maybe, you just beat out all those candidates that had three years of IT and a degree, fair and square.

Yes.

Also, the jobs are often posted by people who don't know shit about the job itself.
And sometimes (like now) they get so few applicants that they basically take the best qualified even if they don't meet their requirements.

It sounds like your experience will be a lot more valuable than a degree. If they can hire someone with a degree who kind of knows what to do, or someone who has been doing it for 20 years who knows exactly what to do, I'm pretty sure they'll go with the latter. Don't have a cheaper salary requirement though. The more people who do that, the more that role will be undervalued across the industry. Get as much as you can from whoever hires you.

Do these companies just put really high requirements and hope someone more qualified will take the bait?

Yes.

Tier 2 should be helpdesk, but someone who knows their shit.
Tier 1 is "read a script and search KB Articles."
Tier 2 is "know what you're doing, know how to google what and fix it."
Tier 3 is "oh shit, this isn't a problem with a pc, its an issues with the system/software being used."

So, help desk sucks. How long do I have to do this? Most of the people who work there are white trash and have been doing help desk for years. I overheard two of them talking about programming the other day: "Yo check this out. If you add a hashtag in front of your code the computer won't read it!". There's an old English guy who works there for some reason and he has a very strong accent. He seems to know everything under the sun related to IT. Everyone is always asking him for help constantly. I have no idea why the fuck he would work at this hick company in the US instead of at a posh office in the UK.

Many people can work years or more in helpdesk until they burn out.
As for why anyone would work there and not in the UK: could be any number of reasons, but most help desks are being replaced by India.  So... FYI.

Depending on the company, you may be able to progress internally. That's how I started my career — I did a year of helpdesk, then about two more years of level 2 support (which also sucks, but you get to deal with more interesting problems) before I moved on to bigger and better things.

If you want to take that route, what worked for me is to just do some of the tasks you want to be doing. I only got promoted to level 2 support after people noticed I was already taking on support tickets above my pay grade. Again, this likely varies a lot from one company to another, so consider what is relevant to your position and goals.

There are two level 3 remote workers from Pakistan, probably being paid $5 an hour for way more advanced work. They manage all of the ESXi machines in the office.

What kind of work are you looking for in the long term, Fortuna?

Cloud, most likely AWS. I'm working on learning Bash and Python concurrently with all the AWS services.

That's about what the hiring manager said. 12 - 18 months of level 1 support. But, I hear of people being promoted out in 6 months, and other people who stay there for years. It seems no one but the IT manager knows anything about cloud, though. The only problem is that the few cloud services they use are on Azure and I'm learning AWS. Although, I imagine they have pretty similar offerings, no?

I have no idea about Azure and I have never touched it or read about it, but I'm confident I could work with it if I had to because I've developed enough general technical skills without focusing too much on one provider. That's what I would suggest in all cases — instead of looking at your current endeavour as learning bash and python, for example, see it as learning how to script using bash and python as examples. Then if someone wants you to write in perl, there will be a slight learning curve, but you will already have most of the skills you need.

The same goes for AWS. Make sure you understand what is going on conceptually, not just the steps you have to go through to build something on AWS. This is made somewhat challenging by the fact that it's in AWS's interests to lock you into their services as much as possible, so it is sometimes not very transparent. But for example, you could set up a PostgreSQL database server manually on an EC2 instance to get an idea of what goes on behind the scenes when you use RDS.

The modern tech industry has far too much emphasis on specific tooling and too little on the fundamental concepts, with the result that most people don't understand what the tools they're using do. I hope you don't fall into that trap.

Anytime I have call for support on any computer, application, or software platform, I know the guy answering the phone is 3 or 4 levels below the guy I need to talk to.

Taking Security + in a couple of weeks...  I'll be qualified for some $10 an hour Pakistani job.

There are two level 3 remote workers from Pakistan, probably being paid $5 an hour for way more advanced work. They manage all of the ESXi machines in the office.

They took mah job!!!

Anytime I have call for support on any computer, application, or software platform, I know the guy answering the phone is 3 or 4 levels below the guy I need to talk to.

Taking Security + in a couple of weeks...  I'll be qualified for some $10 an hour Pakistani job.

Well, their role is probably a $40 an hour job in the US.

Fucking nerds at this place trying to talk about how much they know about IT. The English guy is quiet and hardly says anything unless someone bothers him for help. There's a super autistic guy there who stutters and mumbles constantly who is really nice. Everyone else is a dickhead who is always trying to one-up whoever they're talking to. This one lady won't shut the hell up about Log4j whenever she talks to the manager, like she's some kind of security hotshot. She always announces to everyone that she's "in the firewall poking around". Later in the day, I saw her trying to use PowerShell with red text all over the damn place. I tried to start a conversation with this little Chinese guy the other day about all the services AWS has and how powerful it is, and he goes on a rant about how physical servers will always be better because you can see them and touch them. So, I just sat in my corner for the rest of the day and helped the autistic guy pull hard drives out of old PCs. Kill me.

Maybe I picked the wrong career. Hopefully this place is just more insufferable than the norm.

No idea.  Never worked at a place like that and I'm on...place 3 for IT support.

Of course, I could be 'that guy' and not know it.

MSPs are generally shithouses. You can actually learn a lot (by yourself if you are driven) due to the diverse nature of businesses you may provide support for, but you will likely lack guidance from someone who knows what they are doing. Usually, billable hours are the name of the game.

Work for a tech company if you want to do the "bleeding edge" stuff, work for the government if you want to coast, work for a mid-size business (as internal IT, preferably sysadmin or equivalent) if you want something in between.

It's a mess, held together by a British guy and a really pro manager. I'll most likely go the government route.

If you can find a school district, go there.

Relaxed.
Few 'after hours' calls.
Holidays and snow days (depending on state).

Gotta take a civil service test most likely but... Its a good job.

I quit. I spent an hour trying to figure out why I couldn't set up a VPN on a client's PC. I finally said "what the hell is this shit" out loud and the British guy came over. He looked at the config document I was going off of and said "Oh that lot is out of date." and scooted back to his desk. I had been using the wrong MFA token, credentials, and even the client. There was nothing in the document indicating it was deprecated. The proper client isn't even documented anywhere. I had to ask someone. Big deal, right? Now I know how to do it. No. Everything is like that at this company. Anyway, I have a couple more interviews coming up.

Nope.  In fact, you got lucky: someone knew something.
Now imagine a situation where the british guy knew as much as you.

Holy Crap, now I see what's going on when I call someplace for tech support.

What kind of money are these people being paid?

I could deal with a lot of bullshit for the right price and if some company wants to pay me enough, I could enjoy spinning my wheels in meaninglessness.  I'll take all the money they want to waste.

Of course, I'd have to develop some weird persona to fit in. I could be 'that dude who wears an ascot' or 'the old hippie with the Ramones screensaver."

What kind of money are these people being paid?
The kind of money that makes you not care, thus perpetuating the cycle.

Not always.
Depends if you're a contractor or not.
Contractors get paid shit.  Especially if the company paying them is Indian.

I wish, but it is another of the big tech companies. It's not a fancy SWE job or anything. Just working in a datacenter.

I picked a place to stay in San Jose. It’s a really nice area, but rent will be $2300 a month while I’m there. What in the fuck? That’s more than a mortgage payment in most places.

City living is expensive as shit.
But live outside the city?  It drops alot.

OK, just passed Security +.  It was no fucking fun at all. Holy crap, it sucked.
But it's a good general cert that can help in a few IT roles. maybe extra money...

I was going to do Pentest + because it's software I already know and something I like doing but everybody wants to be a hacker. Pentesting is super niche with limited jobs and lots of applicants. Even if I want to compete for a pen testing job, the Comptia cert looks really puny next to others like the CEH that cost thousands of dollars.

I need to sharpen up skills that are more widely marketable. I was thinking about some Microsoft certs so I spun up a 2019 Server to work with Active Directory management.

I created a user. His name is Tim, he's a transvestite. He is in a group that has permissions to access the network printer.

For what it's worth: I'm currently a pentester, and I completely agree that CompTIA certs are pretty worthless in this area. Even the very cheap Burp Suite Certified Practitioner (https://portswigger.net/web-security/certification) is going to command more respect.

Can confirm. Even if you know the material, CompTIA test question wordings are notoriously horrible. Although, it's a required cert if you want to get a gubmint security job in the US.

I've been using the community version of Burp for a while and didn't know this was a thing. I use Owasp ZAP for anything with real brute force because the freebie Burp is so severely throttled.

I may go for this. I already have a good head start on the software so it should go easy and I can always learn some new tricks. $99 dollars to get a certificate suitable for framing and add 1/32 of an inch to the size of my IT dick is a pretty good deal.

They sent me a 32 inch monitor even though it’s an on-site job. Maybe it’s so I can look up microchips and whatnot at home.

This job is chill as hell. It’s kinda similar to the other one, but they have resources and troubleshooting guides embedded in each ticket that comes in, suggested fixes etc.. The best part is I don’t have to answer any phones.
