Title: Philosophy dichotomy test
Post by: Pete Svarrior on April 30, 2019, 05:25:42 PM
You know the drill, lads. I found a random survey on the Internet, so I'm starting a thread for everyone to fill it in and post screenshots. We can then insult each other for having the wrong philosophical views.

My results:

Philosophies: Aristotelianism, Objectivism, Hobbesian

A window into my soul ... as requested.

Also all that nihilism you have. Its a wonder you haven't killed yourself. I mean what's the point of breathing if its all so meaningless?

Also I didn't get the little icons and philosophies.  ???

What would the point of that be? Sounds like effort.

The questions are often pretty vague and sometimes couched in what I think of as false dichotomies, and the gradation of answers is not sufficient to actually accommodate my views in many cases.

also lmao @ "Yang Gang #2020"

I agree with Crudblud about how vague some of these are. A few I didn't really have a ton of confidence in my answers.

"Life is suffering and fundamentally meaningless."

Meaningless on a fundamental level sure, but suffering? Yikes. Edgy. No the former but yes to the latter. So I just picked neutral.

"There is more to the world than mere material."

This depends on if this means in a spiritual/mystical sense of heaven/deities/entities/realms or "there is more to life than material things". So, again, neutral.

It's not edgy. "Life is suffering" is a core tenet of Buddhism and a common topic in philosophy. Considering there are 488 million Buddhists (according to the Google Overlord), it's not uncommon to be brought up believing that life is a state of suffering, and only by being freed from an existing circle of life, death, and rebirth can one be freed from the suffering of life.

I like how the website doesn't bother displaying the results of the test as an image that can be copied or saved, forcing the user to do all the work themselves. That's really great design.

So Buddhists would answer yes to the former and no to the latter. It's a stupid question for them too.

So "Buddhists believe it so it can't be edgy"? FYI I'm using "edgy" in the "brooding angsty Sasuke" sense. Which apparently applies to Buddhism.

Also doesn't change that having it be a vague two-parter is dumb since I can agree with one half and disagree with the other, in either order.

Representing data as an image file would be terrible design. They've done things (closer to) correctly, but it just happens to be inconvenient in this use case.

To give you one example: a vision-impaired person won't be able to make any use of an image. Representing the data properly means it can be processed in more ways than one.

Ah yes, the Herculean task of capturing and cropping a screenshot.

I'm not sure a basic belief held by hundreds of millions of people who form the majority of multiple countries qualifies as "edgy". It's not angst, either. It sounds like you just entirely misunderstood the philosophical concept behind the statement.
