The one and only Shaq has just joined the Flat Earth fight! Dr O' Neal, who most likely does not need a lengthy introduction here, has recently voiced his support for the Flat Earth Theory after he was questioned on Kyrie Irving's beliefs.

As we've been reliably informed on Facebook a couple of days ago, the Flat Earth Society has recently received some publicity from Yahoo! News. While their article exhibits the usual pro-RE bias expected of the social media, it's good to see more and more news organisations giving us recognition.

From Yahoo! News, What is the Flat Earth Theory?:
The most prominent of the modern groups that believe the Earth to be flat is the Flat Earth Society, which claims on its website: “This is the home of the world-famous Flat Earth Society, a place for free thinkers and the intellectual exchange of ideas. This website hosts information and serves as an archive for Flat Earth Theory. It also offers an opportunity to discuss this with the Flat Earth community on our forums.”

Every article like this spreads our message to more unaware minds. For that, I would like to thank Yahoo! News, even if their original goal was to call us "illogical" or "contrary to all evidence". Here's hoping that our new visitors have found what they were looking for.

I realise this will be a very subjective issue, and I appreciate that I might find myself in the minority here, but hey:

Personally, I find it a bit difficult to tell the difference between bold and normal text on this forum. If people agree, could we perhaps consider making it bolder? I'm thinking a font-weight of 700 would be much more noticeable than 600.

It's time to spend some money you guys!!!!

As many of you probably know, I have wanted to buy a new desktop for years, and I think I'm finally ready to commit enough £ for that to actually make sense. This thread is intended for all the nerds to make fun of me for my choices and to suggest stupid alternatives that I will laugh at and disregard.

Some ground rules:

• This will first and foremost be a gaming computer. I will also use it for Excel spreadsheets, browsing FES, and I might donate my processing power to science when shit's idle.
• I work something silly like 12-hour days and literally don't have free time. I'd prefer not to invest any time into building my own PC, unless I can save enough money to get a serious upgrade out of it.
• My budget is £1000 (not including peripherals - I'm reasonably happy with what I have), and I'd like for that to be a fairly firm ceiling.
• I'm not married to nVidia/Intel, but for some reason I always tend to pick them over AMD. There's no rhyme or reason to it, so feel free to convince me to flip-flop.

Very much the latter right now. I'm focusing my efforts on Facebook because that seems to be what I'm good at. I hope to diverge my attention once I get Facebook where I want it, but that's a long-term and low-priority plan.

Bobby Ray Simmons Jr, better known as B.o.B, has recently endorsed the Flat Earth Theory, originally through a series of tweets on his official account (@bobatl).

The cities in the background are approx. 16miles apart... where is the curve ? please explain this

Eventually, he came under fire from the notorious science communicator, Neil deGrasse Tyson. B.o.B has handled this by doing what he does best - he released a song about his beliefs and deGrasse Tyson's deception, titled Flatline. You can listen to the track at B.o.B's SoundCloud.

Flat Earth Community / The fracturing of the Flat Earth community

I just stumbled upon this article by Beau Dure, and I found it to be quite an interesting read. In short, he outlines the recent fracturing of the FE community (including our own schism - I believe this is the first mainstream media article that managed to not only not conflate us, but actually bring up the history of our split and the stagnant reunification proposal).

I was wondering what your view is on the points raised - do you think that this kind of decentralisation of the movement is a bad thing? Or perhaps it serves as an opportunity for ideas to develop independently? Should we be concerned?

As a side note: while I obviously appreciate comments from Round Earthers and Flat Earthers alike, I would like to ask everyone to refrain from arguing the shape of the Earth in this thread. I'm hoping to start the discussion on the community at large, regardless of whether or not its ideas are right.

In just over 2 hours, the final Democratic candidate debate before the Iowa cacuses will take place in Charleston, South Carolina.

The stage has already been set and prepared for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and That Other Guy:



As is often (okay, sometimes) the case, I will be getting drunk and making fun of the candidates. Most of my activity will probably be contained to IRC (you should totally join), but I might drop an occasional wacky zinger here, too. Meanwhile, this thread can serve as an avenue for everyone to have their say, regardless of whether you're a Democrat or a decent human being.

In response to our users' feedback regarding the forum's current theme, I am pleased to announce that we are now beginning to trial a replacement! Our new theme - blanko_fes - features a modern, sleek design, a more comfortable mobile experience, visual consistency with our other sites, and a number of small quality-of-life improvements. As is usually the case with major visual overhauls around here these days, virtually all credit for this effort goes to Blanko, with a little bit of assistance from Parsifal and my not-so-humble self.

While we're fairly confident that this is an overall huge improvement to the FES browsing experience, we would like to hold back for a moment and allow our community a chance to have their say and provide feedback before we roll this out as the default. Chances are things won't be perfect out of the box - there will certainly be tweaks and adjustments to be made here and there. For the time being, we are making it available as an opt-in thing - if you'd like to help us with testing, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you'd like to start using the theme now, you can do so by going to the Look and Layout area of your profile settings and switching the current profile to blanko_fes. If you'd like to post any feedback, make suggestions or request additional features, please do so via Suggestions & Concerns, as per usual. I will also monitor the comments on this announcement for any questions that you don't feel merit a whole thread of their own.

Announcements / Support independent Flat Earthers - help Darrell complete his experiment!

[Please note: Darrell Fox is not part of the Flat Earth Society, nor is he affiliated with us in any way. We have not been approached by him. We're merely trying to spread an interesting initiative on part of this independent FE'er]

A gentleman calling himself Darrell Fox is attempting to amass some funds to perform a Flat Earth experiment, which may be worth your consideration. To summarise the effort in his own words:

I will be doing several high altitude balloon launches at different times of day to get definite proof. At the salt flats. [...]  I have found some very excellent equipment I would like to send up such as a high-definition camera attached to a gimbal to cancel the rocking that causes lens distortion. I will also be putting a Raspberry pi computer with a sensor array to give us telemetry data and a GPS tracking device to find the unit. The sensor array is the Raspberry pi Sense hat.  I have had some comments here saying that I'm using GPS to find the unit after it descends proves the earth is a globe. GPS uses ground-based technology, the signal fails at a certain altitude.

His campaign seems to already be getting some traction, with over $400 amassed (out of his $1000 goal) today. Shoud you consider it worthwhile, you can support his experiment here.

Alternatively, if I'm just being a dum-dum and failing to find the announcement, could you point me in the right direction?

Announcements / Petition for Google to recognise 2016 as the Flat Earth Anniversary

There is a petition currently going around asking that Google recognises the year 2016 as the anniversary of our movement's resurgence. While this has been started independently of the Flat Earth Society, it calls for the recognition of many of the world's prominent Flat Earthers and the debate they have started.

Through our combined efforts, the Flat Earth subject is becoming more and more popular. While the beliefs of different FE organisations may differ strongly at times, it is crucial that we stick together and strike the iron while it's hot.

Some excerpts from the full text of the petition:

We ask Google to recognise this movement, which has trended over 600% in just the past 12 months, by marking 01/01/2016 as the anniversary of the Flat Earth Movement and changing the Google Doodle image appropriately.
Men and women who choose to think for themselves, who stand up to the face of ridicule and mockery because they truly believe to have found the truth and will not allow any man to stand in their way.
The truth is the truth, whether you like it or not.

The Republican candidate debates are on tonight. They have been divided into two groups for two separate debates: one for the top 10 candidates as determined by current poll rankings and one for the remaining 7. The latter has just finished.

I kept score using Fox News's app and it seems that Carly Fiorina was my favourite out of the 7. She seemed a bit more conservative than I'd like, but she argued her points well and came across as very competent and level-headed. Shortly behind her came George Pataki - he came across as more moderate, but also not as well prepared. The others pretty much blew it, with (unsurprisingly) Santorum fucking it up the most.

The "prime-time" debate will start in just over 2 hours. It'll probably be much more interesting, what with Trump shouting over everyone. Tune in and enjoy some Republican... republicanism?

I'd like to have a discussion about this. I just noticed Lord Dave's sig consists of a post from CN, which would normally likely not be allowed to be posted in the upper fora. However, since it's been quoted in a member's sig, it can now appear prominently throughout the site, including the pages accessible to unregistered users.

Of course, as it stands, doing so is not in breach of the rules, but perhaps we should do something to restrict sigs just a bit? To me, it looks like the lack of regulation in signatures is an oversight which allows for some rules to be partially circumvented. I'd be curious to see what others think.

This is primarily a response to Tausami's posts in "Party Membership", but since it doesn't have much to do with the original subject, I thought I'd give it a new thread.

Oh, come on. Quoting a tumblog that's either a) satirical or b) run by a 13 year old girl who doesn't entirely understand the concepts she's angry about isn't fair. Even most of tumblr makes fun of people like that.

You pretending that there isn't a significant proportion of real tumblr crazies (be that feminists, stormfronters, communists, paedophiles, or a combination of those) is something we probably shouldn't waste our time on. So, instead, let's jump to more "serious" media. I'm going to relax the constraints a little bit here, since this particular, vocal branch of mainstream feminism does not exist in a vacuum, but is rather part of a larger authoritarian movement.

Here are some examples of modern feminist or otherwise social-justice-warriory behaviour that also happens to be authoritarian:

• We tend to empathize with our online avatars. So let's get rid of white emojis - The Guardian
• White men should never hold elected positions in British universities again - The Telegraph [article since removed due to public outrage]
• Kamila Shamsie: let’s have a year of publishing only women – a provocation - The Guardian (already linked by Parsifal, but worth re-emphasising)
• The only people who need to fear an affirmative consent standard for rape are rapists - The Guardian
• The entire UVA non-rape saga, as delivered by the Rolling Stone:
• A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA - The Rolling Stone [article since removed due to the entire story being completely false] - Listen and believe, indeed!
• The Rolling Stone Retraction - The Atlantic - a debrief on the whole fiasco.
• Goldsmith's Student Diversity Officer Bahar Mustafa Investigated By Police After She Tweeted 'Kill All White Men' - The Huffington Post UK - Bahar is an interesting lady altogether, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend anyone wondering why some people don't like SJWs to research her in depth.
• What’s Wrong with Cultural Appropriation? These 9 Answers Reveal Its Harm - Everyday Feminism (Also, the concept of "cultural appropriation" as a whole.)
• If you're a man, your clothes are sexist and you should instead wear the clothes we approve of:
• I don't care if you landed a spacecraft on a comet, your shirt is sexist and ostracizing - The Verge
• Mark Zuckerberg's Simple Defense of His Clothes Reinforces a Sexist Double Standard - Mic.com

Let's throw in a few opinion pieces about "social justice":

• Women’s lib no longer on agenda of today’s authoritarian feminists - The Australian
• Sorry, Emma Watson, but HeForShe Is Rotten for Men - TIME (This article also makes a good case for why, even if we accept that "kill all men" is just a hilarious joke, it does more harm than good to feminism's original cause)
• The Pecking Disorder: Social Justice Warriors Gone Wild - Observer
• Yes, Diversity Is About Getting Rid Of White People (And That’s A Good Thing) - Thought Catalog [article since removed due to "hateful or abusive content"] [content warning: may contain trace amounts of satire]

Also, the tags 'male tears' and 'kill all men' generally represent someone who is being tongue-in-cheek. There might be people who actually believe that shit, but mostly they're not. The hardcore feminists I know are usually just trying to get a rise out of men's rights activists with shit like that.

This is a response that many people won't accept easily. In a society where both sexes and all races have pressing issues, it's simply not acceptable to ostracise and marginalise one group. Yes, even if it's the big bad evil white man. In the mainstream, we (rightly, in my view) criticise people wearing t-shirts like "w0w babe make me a sandwich", but simultaneously glorify people at the verge of quoting the SCUM manifesto. That's simply not on, and the growing opposition to movements which were once considered "progressive" should be evidence enough.
