« on: April 21, 2015, 02:23:44 PM »
I think there should be a separate chat room for TFES and for general chatting.  People come to IRC to chat with flat Earthers, because that is what the Home Page invites them to do, only to be chased off by people proclaiming that, "we don't discuss the shape of the Earth here."  Does this not seem counter productive to anyone else?  Should not the people who just want to bull shit be in a different room from the noobs who come to IRC to ask FE questions live?  Is it just me?

We already have another chat room, #antichtone. Nobody's using it because nobody wants to a) follow two separate channels, or b) have to migrate just so the main channel can be dedicated for humouring noobs. Nothing will change either way, because we don't get any flat earth experts on IRC.

My proposal is to not make IRC the landing page for noobs to interact with the society, because they inevitably either come to troll or are unwilling to check out the forums despite our insistence that they should. So perhaps the webchat link should be removed from the front page. Out of all the noobs we've gotten since webchat was introduced, none of them have seemingly registered on the forums. And frankly, I don't want to deal with this shit every day:

We ought to just get rid of the link on the home page.  IRC simply isn't suited to debating FET, or doing anything other than light chatting, for that matter.

You want to make it your secret club just for you and your friends. It was obvious from the outset.

In which case it should never have been made public. FE IRC has always been about a group of nervous young men making comments about everyone else behind their backs. Never was there an intention to use it to allow more access and make the society more accessible to people.

So keep it as your treehouse and put a sign on it "No adults allowed". And get all the links to it off of the website. ::)

Thork once again shows undue concern that IRC is used to talk shit about him behind his back, despite the fact that we do it to his face everyday.

I don't care. But newcomers shouldn't come to the site and have you shooing them away for interacting with you.

And frankly, I don't want to deal with this shit every day:

[17:32:37] <kljlj> the earth is round

This coming from an op in the channel, it seems to me like you missed a fairly obvious solution to the problem there.

There seems to be overwhelming support for this position. As much as it saddens me to lose a potentially great source of newcomers, we clearly do not have the resources to properly redirect people. Let's remove the link and consider including it somewhere deeper within the forum.

Please stop already. Shouting loudly is not going to make your positions any less unpopular.

I wasn't active at that particular time, and there weren't any other ops active at the time either. Mind you that I don't even have ops on Blanko, only on Blankodroid.

I know I shouldn't do this, but I can't help but reply when Thork is being even more wrong than usual.

This is an asinine stance from someone who doesn't even use the FES IRC channel. I am not on as frequently as some, but I am typically there several hours a week. I have never seen people just talk bad about others who weren't there because it is some big secret super fun thing to do. The link was literally posted in as public of a place as possible and Parsifal made it incredibly easy for anyone to access. Claiming that it is a "secret club" is beyond moronic, which I am sure you know, but for some reason you want to keep shouting this opinion because maybe the more times you say it, the more true it will become. It isn't true, and you are being incredibly obtuse.

I'd still like to do or at least consider that, but I'm currently too busy to give it the time it needs, and there is clearly a lot of dissatisfaction with the current situation. I think hiding the link is a good immediate remedy. We can see how to proceed after that.

We should just use #theflatearthsociety as we currently do and make a channel called #flatearthdiscussion or something similar, so that rather than trying to get people to leave their current channel and move to a new one, we can let people who actually want to discuss the shape of the earth move to that channel instead. Then put #theflatearthsociety somewhere that's still easily accessible to forumites who want to use it and have #flatearthdiscussion on the front page.

I think that the idea of two separate channels -- one for flat-earth discussions and one for other things -- sounds good on paper, but in practicality it would not work.  Everyone would just go to the "everything else" channel and the newcomers would find an empty place to discuss/spam about the shape of the earth.  They will either simply switch to the other channel and voice their views there or just leave. Which I must assume defeats the entire purpose of a newcomers channel.

We already have such a link on the forum. My current situation with power makes it difficult to deploy changes, to put it mildly, but feel free to make the change live if it's causing big problems before I get power back.
