Title: Agreed features of the Earth
Post by: Peter Winfield on February 25, 2021, 11:39:10 PM
In order to improve discussion of the various models of the Earth, I think it would be helpful to list the features on the Earth which both sides can agree on.

This is my list, but perhaps others can add to this list (or object to items on this list).
I have tried to define them in ways that do not presuppose either model.

1) North and South
These are are defined as the direction from the observer to the highest elevation of the Sun during any day.

2) Solstices
These can be defined as the days on which the Sun reaches its highest and lowest elevation during a year.
One occurs in December and the other occurs in June.

3) Equinoxes
These can be defined as the days that are at the mid point between the two Solstices.
One occurs in March and the other occurs in September

4) The Equator
This is defined as the locus of points where the Sun passes directly overhead on an Equinox.

5) The Tropics
These are defined as the locus of points where the Sun passes directly overhead on one of the Solstices.
The Tropic of Cancer is North of the Equator and the Sun is overhead during the June Solstice
The Tropic of Capricorn is South of the Equator and the Sun is overhead during the December Solstice.

6) Poles
A Pole is defined as a point where the Sun remains at a constant elevation throughout the day.
On the two equinoxes that elevation is 90degrees from the vertical (i.e. horizontal)

7) Celestial Poles
A Celestial Pole is defined as a point in the sky that is always on the North/South axis and around which other stars appear to rotate.
The North Celestial Pole is always due North and the South Celestial Pole is always due South.
