Status Notices / Unplanned outage, 2019-01-23
« on: January 23, 2019, 06:09:09 AM »
The forum and homepage were offline from about 00:07 to 06:05 UTC on 2019-01-23. The cause was the database partition running out of disk space while the admin was asleep.

In the short term, I've just added more space. The long-term fix is to set up proper monitoring so we know well in advance when this sort of thing is going to happen.

Announcements / We've got five years, stuck on my eyes
« on: December 01, 2018, 12:28:31 PM »
Five years ago to the minute, I asked for help in building the best damn Flat Earth discussion forum on the web. The growth and success we've seen since then is more amazing than any of us ever could have hoped for.

The number of people who've helped make this place what it is is too numerous to mention, but here are some high points:
  • Our forum growth is accelerating both in terms of new topics and new members, in a decade when independent web forums overall are rapidly declining.
  • We remain one of the few Flat Earth discussion forums that welcomes constructive discussion from Round Earthers. We still believe that the best way to improve our own ideas is by exposing them to criticism.
  • Our wiki has grown into one of the richest references for Flat Earth knowledge on the web, and continues to be actively maintained.
  • On social media, we continue to be a voice of reason in discussions with Round Earthers and fellow Flat Earthers alike. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for your daily dose of logic!
  • We've expanded our media presence to include regular interviews with the press.
  • We have developed our own consistent branding across all our channels, and it's pretty slick, if we do say so ourselves.
We're especially proud to be a positive influence on the growth of the Flat Earth movement at large. We believe that being transparent and providing a freethinking platform for open (but civil!) discussion of all ideas is the best way to promote our own ideas, as people see how they stand up to scrutiny. We believe the numbers speak for themselves on this one.

To everyone reading this, no matter where you are, what shape you think the Earth is or what your opinion of our organisation, we invite you to raise a glass to these accomplishments, and hope you'll be a part of making the next five years even better!

Arts & Entertainment / Aretha Franklin dead (some time ago)
« on: November 03, 2018, 12:42:11 AM »
Since apparently the current media trend of hailing the apocalypse whenever a celebrity dies doesn't extend to anyone with actual talent, here's a belated farewell to Aretha Franklin, who died on 16 August. Sad times. :(

Announcements / Debate Club forum restructure
« on: June 23, 2018, 12:15:53 PM »
Hello Earthers of all shapes and sizes!

In the hope of facilitating more constructive and honest debate, we will be restructuring the forums tomorrow (2018-06-24, 09:00 UTC) while down for maintenance. To minimise confusion during the transition, you will not be able to access the forum while the changes are being made.

A summary of the changes that will take place:

1) Create Flat Earth Investigations - Investigate authoritative claims on any topic. Question our institutions and challenge conventional wisdom.

2) Rename Flat Earth General to Flat Earth Community.

3) Merge FE debate, FE Q&A, Rename to Flat Earth Theory - A place to examine the Flat Earth Theory.

4) Rename Flat Earth Information Repository to Flat Earth Media

5) Rename Zetetic Council Forum to Flat Earth Projects. Place the Earth Not a Globe Workshop as a subforum within Flat Earth Projects (Ideally, not seen on the main Table of Contents page)

Technology & Information / My weekly 9front time
« on: May 09, 2018, 08:47:35 PM »
In the spirit of the last great OS contribution thread, I am now focusing my attention on an even better OS by the name of 9front. Since tomorrow is a public holiday here, I'm going to take the opportunity to get started.

Thursday, 10 May, 2018

Problems to fix
  • Investigate why the etheriwl driver will not associate to my home WiFi (while it works just fine with my phone's WiFi hotspot).
  • Fix some quirks in autocompletion in rio text windows.
  • Debug man -b.
  • Investigate having different tabstops for different sam windows.
  • Try out 9webdraw as a substitute for drawterm, and extend it to support dp9ik authentication.
Long-term investigation to start
  • Implement a RADOS 9p server, which could later be used to support CephFS mounts.

Technology & Information / I want a real mouse
« on: April 27, 2018, 11:44:18 AM »
So basically every mouse these days has a clickable scrollwheel instead of a real middle button. The few that do have a real middle button generally accomplish this by dispensing with the scrollwheel. I want one that has both.

Scouring the Internet has brought up two options:

The Contour Mouse seems perfect, since the scrollwheel is controlled with the thumb and so is entirely independent of the middle button. However, multiple reviews on Amazon say that the surface of the mouse is very slippery and it takes a lot of effort not to have your hand slip off all the time.

The Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 puts the scrollwheel in between the left and middle buttons, which is slightly less optimal, but it has better reviews. It looks really stupid, but a mouse isn't supposed to be eye candy, so I'm ok with that. This is currently my preferred option.

I'm curious if anyone else has any other suggestions. If not, I'll order an Evoluent sometime in the next few days.
