Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Let's use the site-wide theme in CN

Thanks. There's still a lot to be done, it's not nearly ready, but it's a good start.

Don't you dare change the CN theme you cultureless heathens.

Flat Earth Theory / Re: New Star Map

Ships sailing north from different lines of latitude converge toward each other. They don't get further away from each other. That is the reality modern navigation has revealed to us. Leaving the discussion of rotated constellations behind (because it is definitely unresolved), you don't account for converging paths as people move north from various longitudes.

If the stars were just a reflection off a dome like you say, based on what you are showing here it seems like people at the same latitudes would expect to see the constellations of stars rotated differently. That doesn't seem to be the case when observing the stars. Instead, they seem to be pretty much the same on any given day when viewed from the same latitude, sort of moving and rotating a bit throughout the year but at all times appear not to be rotated when compared to other locations of the same latitude. What's your take on that situation?

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: SMF software update
« on: April 26, 2022, 10:17:55 PM »
The GDPR compliance is probably the most notable change in my book. The ability to download all your data and then permanently delete your account is part of that.

The other thing I liked about it is how they handle passwords, but I think you may have already implemented that here. I'd need to go back and reread the notes, but I think it was a move to bcrypt instead of SHA1 for hashing.

Suggestions & Concerns / SMF software update
« on: April 26, 2022, 09:26:26 PM »
The forum software we're running has a couple updates waiting in the wings right now that I wanted to point out. The biggest update is they released SMF2.1 now as an official, production-ready release (current version is 2.1.1). That's been years in the making, and it seems like there are some nice improvements baked in. However, it's not nearly as easy to migrate to, even for admins running a vanilla SMF instance, so I imagine that will take some time to get ready for this site.

Probably more relevant is the fact that SMF also released version 2.0.19, which is just an incremental bump to the version of the software running here. Sort of. With the tweaks you guys have made over the years, I would imagine the patch might need a closer inspection to make sure it plays nice with your environment, but it does bring some compatibility and security improvements.

The main theme is Blanko's variation on Redsy, and I think a Redsy-based theme for CN makes a lot of sense to keep things uniform. I'll take a pull from your github repo and maybe tweak Blanko's theme around a bit to see if I can come up with something that maintains the layout and behavior of the rest of the site, but with more CN-feeling colors etc.

It's been hashed out here several times before, so I won't dwell on it, but I would very much like a more end-user-friendly CN experience. I know it's not a priority because it's viewed as a garbage board, but it exists as part of this site and it gets used so it seems reasonable to treat it like it's really a part of the same site.

Edit: Yeah, basically what Roundy said, I just forgot to hit "Post" earlier and came back to see I hadn't actually shared this.

What problem are we actually solving here?
The problem is those uppity gays with all the rainbows and letters refusing to just be quiet and pretend they don't exist, of course. They are making the good, God-fearing Christians uncomfortable, which is incredibly disrespectful of them, and they must be stopped.

It's taken me a while, I haven't been able to play it quite as much as I really want to, but I finally made it through Stormveil Castle. That place is no joke. I have a really major portion of Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula explored at this point - I'm sure there are things that remain to be found, and I know I still need to go back to the Minor Erdtree in Weeping Peninsula to kill the Erdtree avatar. I definitely need to do more wandering around Caelid too, but Liurnia is really fun to explore and just looks more inviting that Caelid.

I’m surprised she hasn’t called on Israel to lend Ukraine their space laser.
Well Ukraine is full of Nazis, according to her and all the very stable jeniuses that share a similar mindset (you can scroll back a few posts for a great demonstration), so with that in mind it might be more likely that she recommends Israel lend that space laser to Putin so he can use it for its obviously intended purpose.

I'm guessing there are 900 neo-Nazis in the US military out of 481,254 troops.
I guess I need to find a bunker to hole up in so Action69 can get this over with then.

island
what
I'm not sure, but I suspect he means Snake Island. 13 Ukrainian soldiers were there, a Russian ship showed up and told them to surrender, they responded saying "Go fuck yourself" and then they got killed.

A scientific model is a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes. Scientists seek to identify and understand patterns in our world by drawing on their scientific knowledge to offer explanations that enable the patterns to be predicted. The models scientists create need to be consistent with our observations, inferences and current explanations. However, scientific models are not created to be factual statements about the world.

It's... not a model?

OP's model is a model of the round earth, agreed. But it's not a model of a flat earth according to the quote, since there's no current explanation for bendy light (or light behaviour in general).
It doesn't need to explain that though. It just needs to ensure light's behavior is effectively modeled. The clue is in the name.

It's not a theory. It's a model. It's quite literally just a coordinate transformation.

What do you think is the point of performing this transformation?  I've asked the OP, so what do you think is being achieved here?
I don't think that particularly matters, frankly. Aside from the entertainment value that Pete already mentioned, it may very well not have many practical applications (hence, the phrase "logically sound but practically useless" or however it was phrased earlier). But lots of things start out that way, especially in mathematics. String theory was considered useless to the physics world shortly after its creation, and it was only after many years that people started revisiting it and finding it might possibly have some practical applications.

The truly interesting thing isn't the model OP is sharing. It's the visceral response from what I guess I can only describe as RE ideologues that's really interesting. Some people are so caught up in fighting against a thing, that they can't even realize when they start unknowingly arguing against their own position.

If I had to guess, OP is studying some things like mapping and/or coordinate transformations presently and found an interesting way to take a deeper dive into the topic than just reading stale textbook material. And that's a perfectly valid reason to want to work through a problem like this as well.

Long story short: McConnel has something of a backbone, but only because the RNC loves Trump and he does not.
Look, it was getting a bit exhausting having to manage over at the other place, I may have given him a hint...

That aside though, did anyone see Your Favorite President dropped his first Truth bomb? And his oldest child quickly and diligently screenshotted it to post on Twitter? Pretty sweet flex, right?

???
My Favorite President is dead... Who are you talking about?
Oh, sorry, I figured this had hit everyone's news feed already. I was referring to the self-declared Your Favorite President.

You can find screenshots at your favorite new outlet, it's on basically all of them now. Or, you can find it on Yahoo Sports, which is where all the good news is anyway.
