Suggestions & Concerns / Re: How to insert image

If the image isn't already on the internet somewhere, you need to upload it somewhere first, like imgbb or someplace similar.

What's your current network setup? Is it a combo modem/router/wifi access point kind of device, like ISPs will give out? Or multiple devices, like a modem and then a wifi router? Which of those devices have Ethernet ports to connect downstream devices, even if they are already taken?

I have no need for the archival drives to be connected 24/7. I'd actually prefer that they weren't.
My NAS has a power button :P I turn it on about once a week to do backups, otherwise it's usually off. I know you said you didn't want a NAS though, you gotta do what works for you.

Here's why I'm asking. You can grab a 5-port unmanaged switch for next to nothing. Most people have a wifi router instead of having a separate device for those tasks, so I'll assume you have one of those for a moment. If your wifi router lets you connect even just a single LAN device to it, connect the switch there and have switch defer to the router for DHCP for anything you plug into it. That way you just added 4 new ports to plug stuff in (the 5th port being for whatever used to be plugged into the router), and you won't have to do a ton of heavy lifting in terms of messing with your current network setup. Netgear GS305 will do that, and it costs less than $15. Then you have room to plug in a NAS, so you can get some redundancy for when a drive inevitably eventually fails. 4 x 2TB drives in a RAID 5 will give you 6TB of usable storage that you won't lose even when a drive fails.

In general, best practices for backups is 3-2-1. 3 copies of your data, on at least 2 different types of media, with 1 of them being offsite. At the very least, get the 3 and the 2 part of that as best you can.

Flat Earth Theory / Re: FET implies intelligent design
« on: March 21, 2021, 08:53:56 PM »
That's not a far stretch from something theists of various flavors like to argue, about how the fine tuning of the universe also implies intelligent design. You can just as easily invoke something like the anthropic principle, we find the universe is the way it is because if it wasn't, we wouldn't be around to think about it.
<A lot of words>
I really am not sure what you are taking issue with in my post. I'm pointing out that FET doesn't imply intelligent design much more so than RET, as both schools of thought have very fine tuned mechanics that make life as we know it possible.

105
Here's a variant on the issue I've come across before, but it just happened to pop up yesterday so I was able to capture it:

- A member who shall not be named nor singled out made a post in a thread (In the uppers).
- I hit "Quote" to respond.
- I got distracted and didn't actually type anything for like 10 minutes
- I typed my response, hit "Preview" and got this message:

So then, in another tab, I navigated all the way over to the thread to see if the post I was responding to had been deleted. It was still there, nothing had changed that I could tell, and there was no edit timestamp.

So I guess the poster, in that 10 minute interim where I hadn't responded yet, deleted their post and then re-posted it exactly as it was before? Why would someone do that?
If you notice that again, look at the message number in the quote you had originally and compare it to the message number in the new quote. Example: Your quote above has "link=topic=17876.msg234767#msg234767" referenced when I clicked to quote it, so the message number is 234767. You can delete that, and then repost exactly the same thing, and you can do that before anyone else has a chance to respond, but the message number will change.

Arts & Entertainment / Re: Now Playing (the Video Game Version)
« on: March 19, 2021, 10:59:37 PM »
Just finished the main story line in Immortals Fenyx Rising. It was pretty fun. Very much a blend of BotW and AC:Odyssey. If open world single-player RPGs are a thing you play for fun, it should be on your short list of games to consider playing.

108
The way I've seen it is kinda how I described it previously.

If you're typing a response and hit Post or Preview and a brand new post has been added in the interim, you get:
'Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.'

If you're typing a response and hit Post or Preview and someone has edited their post in the interim, you get:
'Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.'

Same thing, no distinction between the two scenarios.

I guess that's the question - how can you tell the post was edited, versus whether it was deleted and an "edited" version was just posted as a new post? I'm trying to wrap my head around this because I've got an SMF instance of my own that, if this is a bug to track down, I want to go track it down. But I also don't want to embark on a wild goose chase.

Edit to clarify, and even more explicitly state: this is an actual question that I have, I'm not presupposing an answer. I'd love to actually catch this happening at a site where I can witness the issue real time, and then also be able to check to see if a post was just deleted and then basically copy-pasta'd into a "new" post, or if an actual bona fide edit is really causing this to happen.

After a post is edited it says so at the bottom of the post.
Sometimes. But that's tangential.

I'm reasonably sure that those warnings are only shown in the event of new posts, not edited posts. It's entirely possible the staff here have modified the code enough where I'm mistaken, but from SMF's language packs, the warning messages are as follows, and every single one of them references a new post rather than an edited post:
Code: [Select]
$txt['error_new_reply'] = 'Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.';
$txt['error_new_replies'] = 'Warning - while you were typing %1$d new replies have been posted. You may wish to review your post.';
$txt['error_new_reply_reading'] = 'Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.';
$txt['error_new_replies_reading'] = 'Warning - while you were reading %1$d new replies have been posted. You may wish to review your post.';

111
One reason this happens on the other site that I've noticed is someone will delete their original post and repost something either identical, or nearly identical, so as to avoid the "edit" stamp at the bottom of the post. I wasn't aware SMF also flagged threads unread if a post was edited, though - I was under the impression that it was because of the delete-then-post-again kind of behavior. In fact, I'm certain I've come across threads where posts have been edited and I didn't get flagged as unread. Maybe it's different when it is the most recent post that has been edited though?

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Post limit on DMs

I think it's a good idea. Kokorikos, if you really need to hit a small post number, like let's say 10 is the target to circumvent most spam for example, it's pretty easy to hop into the lower boards and hit that number. But someone who is just here to send annoying PMs and then disappear never to be seen or heard from again isn't likely to invest that kind of effort.

Fortnite doesn't have DLCs.  Git gud, scrub.
I've never played it. It is a game for children.

Sooooo, anyone want to wade in and stop me getting abused by noobs?
I'll do what I can, but I'm not the mage you might expect me to be. That said, barring any changes made on the administrative side, you can close your PMs to people that you don't specifically white list. There's only so many people that post here, it wouldn't take too terribly long to white list the people you actually care to receive messages from, and anyone trying to message you and getting a notification that they are unable to can then post a thread in AR crying about the injustice and you can decide whether to correct the issue OR perhaps there was no issue to correct and the system is working as intended. Modify Profile -> Buddies/Ignore List... -> Add names to list -> Modify Profile -> Personal Messaging -> Change the dropdown about who you want to receive messages from so it only shows Admins and people on your buddy list.

Flat Earth Investigations / Re: How to explain?
« on: March 10, 2021, 01:20:16 PM »
How does the Fish Eye Lens effect explain this video? As you can see the Earth does not distort wildly due to a lens effect as it comes in and out of frame.
That's not the video the OP asked about, and no one has yet made the claim you are demanding stack answers for. That's not really fair, is it?
May I just ask - how is it not fair when someone brings relevant evidence to the discussion that is GE but it is fair when it is FE. This seems more unfair and a bit biased to GE.
What is with all the straw manning happening in this thread? Let's recap for a second.

1. OP posted a video saying it showed the Earth's curvature and asked for someone to explain how that could be.
2. It is then explained to the OP exactly how that could be.
3. Someone else entirely shows up with a red herring.
4. I point out that it's a red herring, not taking the time to also point out the fact that there are clear visual distortions in the goalpost-moving video (there are), but also point out that the initial video (you know, the one the thread is supposed to be about) also shows concave curvature on some frames, because lens distortion.
5. You show up to go back to the red herring comment to try and, I guess, justify it, and at the same time seem to imply that I would have no problem if it was an FE that wanted to move the goalposts.

Steps 3 and 5 in that chain of events don't make sense.

Edit to also address the OP: If you take a look throughout the video you posted, there are times where the curvature not only appears to go away entirely, but times where it appears to horizon is concave. And times where the curvature is greatly exaggerated.

I was watching the landing process  ;D :D, but it seemed strange to me  :P that the youtube-stream only show a computer screen like a computer simulator, with some lines on the left where it supposedly indicated what was happening at that time, but no photo of the landing. . :-B ;)

Who on Mars do you think would be taking the photo of the landing? :)
The life forms they are looking for, of course!

I watched the NASA stream, very cool to see it was a successful landing and get a look at those first couple pictures. It will be fun to watch and see what they learn.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Re: categories of truth
« on: February 12, 2021, 11:15:49 PM »
Ok, so to be clear, you are doubling down on your totally awesome realization that there is a difference between faith and science as if it's something new and interesting? I guess proceed? It's still a far cry from the thing you started saying in your OP. And to boot, you're now equating all faith with FE. With an actual equals sign. And you're also playing arbiter of what "real" truth is now, which is a whole can of worms that doesn't seem like it's something anyone would want to open when they could simply repeat the same thing people have been saying since the scientific method became a thing, which is that there are things you are test in order to support or disprove, and things that just simply aren't testable that you have to either accept or reject on faith. But this is not some new thing that you have stumbled upon. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad you had this personal a-ha moment, it's an important thing everyone should experience. But it's not new. And you also are calling all faith-based positions BS, per your own OP, which is pretty arrogant.

Meanwhile Sydney Powell is so confident about her claims that she is avoiding being served by Dominion for the defamation lawsuit. But, yes, for sure there is tons of super good evidence of fraud lol

I'm suspecting she and Rudi are on the lam holed up in a roadside motel outside of Barstow under the nom de plume Mr. & Mrs Kraken. That's usually how these fugitives-on-the-run things go.
If only Hunter S. Thompson were still around to tell this story. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '20 is a book I'd read in a heartbeat.

AMD is out-innovating Intel quite a bit as of late.
They are still being handed their arses by Apple.
For light use applications, they have a leg up. For workloads that require more horsepower, not so much.
