Flat Earth Community / Re: What Flat Earth has done for me.
« on: October 19, 2016, 04:37:12 PM »
Discovering these FES websites hasn't changed my life. But it has been sort of s teaching tool . Examples of how map projections are made and how the distances from the earth to various objects such as the moon have been interesting . I have either brushed up on things I already knew or been enlightend on things I didn't know.
I have also had the opportunity to visit an astronomical observatory,

On the other hand it is really very difficult to understand any reason why some persons would profess to believe that the earth was some flat disc.

And there are some who consider these FES websites as just two more of many "spoof websites" on the Internet.

There  are others who just visit these websites just for the entertainment of the weird ideas from suppposed flat earthers. On the other hand it is really pathetic if flat earthers really profess to believe all of this flat earth nonsense.

I really do believe if you worked in some technical , engineering or scientific line of work you would know - not just believe - that the earth was a globe. If you had  not had the benefit of even an elementary education,  or your work and experience had been in some other field , I think I can understand why you might not be certain of the shape of the earth or even if it was flat and had no interest in learning whether it was "flat" or "round".
Yes, I absolutely agree. The research, both historical and current has firmed up my reasons for quite firmly accepting that the Earth is a Globe orbiting the sun.
I have learned a few surprising things. One of these was that Tycho Brahe's Geocentric model actually matched astronomical observations[1] better than the Heliocentric model of Copernicus. Copernicus had circular orbits for all five known planets, so his model did not fit observations very well, though still better than the Ptolemaic model.

[1]  They were largely his own observations, but I have absolutely no doubt that he was a perfectly honest meticulous astronomer.

Your reasoning might be indicative of round earth but it is not conclusive of anything.  I do not believe stuff just because it is wrote down in a textbook.  Alluding to expert sources doesn't prove anything.  Long Live Flat Earth!  It hasn't hurt anybody, unlike modern science.

Please do not take this as disrespect as I am glad that your life is coming together and long may it continue, I would like to take issue with your reasoning however (not for the first time).

Swapping internet porn for Andy Williams songs is something we all aspire to, but I think you do yourself a disservice, to make such life changes there must have been the will to change. It would seem to be that in this search for a new direction (coinciding as it did with the discovery of this lunatic internet backwater) you mistook effect for cause.

Take the credit for yourself (and the internal chemical shift engendered by not eating all that sugar and cutting out the dope), carry on questioning the status quo, it’s the spice of life (after Moon river), just don’t be so quick to attribute your success to outside influences (especially Tom Bishop FFS), that’s the religious gene calling.

Good luck with the band and the blood pressure.

Incidentally, since I came here the dog has dug up my lawn, I dislocated my knee, Jon Snow has died and been resurrected and the pound has sunk to record lows due to dumb asses, none of this is attributable to this random bunch of misfits, although I do have my suspicions about the lawn incident and the Masons.

Jura:  You can't hurt me.  No keyboard warrior can hurt me.  No one has ever said anything to me on the internet that made me feel more than minor annoyance for more than a few moments.  I come to sites like this every few weeks to entertain myself.

I think you miss the point of my Andy Williams anecdote.  I think you are smart, by the way.  I think all of you are smart.  But, smart doesn't equal right.  Also, in no way do education, knowledge, talent and aptitude add up to good character.

Yes, I have talents, strengths and aptitudes.  I also love dope and easy sex.  I certainly can be stupid and arrogant.

5,6 yrs ago I repented and asked Christ to forgive me.  Christ says: " Ask and you will receive.  Seek and you will find. "  I am asking and I am seeking.  I am not finding the answers in materialism.  What I found is flat earth.  I believe in what I can see working before I believe in science and reason.  What works for me is rejecting modern science.  Seeing something work is much more compelling and convincing than any sophistry

You might not have so many problems is you humbled yourself before God.  Suit yourself.  I am not an evangelist.

I love women so much more than men.   I don't care if they like me back.  Be well.

"how difficult it is to change someone's mindset even with irrefutable evidence, "  What do you consider to be irrefutable evidence?  Do you ever consider that you might be wrong?

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.  A statement/phrase which has been around, in some form, for a few hundred years and made popular in our time by Carl Sagan.

FES and FET make nothing but extraordinary claims backed up by lackluster evidence.  Unlike actual science, FES nor FET offers anything which honestly supports the claims being made and the vast majority of what is offered can't be tested and they won't test that which can be tested.

For all the failures, fits and starts, and accomplishments of science from the time when man first put his mind to the task, even more so from the advent of the scientific method, I will take science any day simply because I can see that science has, through time, made a stepwise progression from ignorance to increased knowledge while it is absolutely clear that those who support and/or promote FET have, at best, stalled at a certain point of knowledge and, at worst, regressed to a point of lesser knowledge.

You are entitled to your opinion.  But that is all it is and it lends no weight to your argument.   There is no shame in being wrong.  There is only shame doing wrong.  I do not know the shape of the Earth and I have never made any claims otherwise.  You are the one with the the point to prove, not me.  And I think you fall well short of eradicating any reasonable doubt.

Science has given evil people the means for wholesale destruction.  People really don't need science to be happy and healthy.  People suffer pain , terror and grief just as much as they ever have.  Lots of scientists and engineers are shysters.  I know because I used to work as an engineer!  In any case, a person isn't believable because they wear a lab coat and have a degree.  Neither do I believe everything I read in textbook.

I can tell you what is more convincing than science and reason: Watching something in you life work whether you understand why or not.

Great dude, Honestly Im proud of you even though I dont know you
Thank you!   You are obviously a gentleman.  Not that common of a thing these days.

The biggest and best thing that has happened to me is I have gotten my music back.  My wife and I ran a small time band and we stayed busy.  My wife got sick (2002), we had no insurance, thus, bankruptcy and financial ruin.  It's been tough.   I have had to stay home and be a caretaker.  I still gigged a little bit but it wasn't the same without Mickey (wife and drummer; a natural born entertainer).  Over the years my mechanics have stayed sharp because I still practiced and tried to learn.  But, my enthusiasm waned.  I just wasn't feeling it.  The last few years I have been increasingly convinced it's over for me.  Caring for my wife has made me turn down gigs.  Last night, I am listening to Andy Williams sing 'Moon River' and it sounded so beautiful to me I spontaneously erupted in sobs of joy; every ounce of strength left my body and I crumpled on the floor as if in a fit of grief.   But, it was pure joy.  All of a sudden I am the same 14 yr old boy like when I started; and like him I was: making my guitar scream, getting the cops called on me and screaming out the window, "I'm Jimi Hendrix."  It's like I am---Dare I say? Born Again  Thank You Flat Earth!

I don't know.  It just works.  And that is the beauty of it.  Flat Earth:  the gift that keeps on giving.  Now that I have thought about it:  Since I am not buying pot and candy I have a lot of extra money.  I am able to pay more towards the principle.  Thus, lower credit card debt.  Thank you flat earth!  I always have money in my pockets these days.

Aw I'm so disappointed. I don't consume pot or candy so I guess I won't profit much by believing in a flat earth. I guess I'll just stick with believing in a RE. You had me excited for a bit there!
Try it.  What do you have to lose?
While I am no flat earther, and I don't believe that belief would do that for me, I certainly do accept that you are quite genuine and I must congratulate you.

But, I don't believe it has to be belief in a flat earth to have that result - a new belief will often lead to a completely changed life.

There was a principle of a Christian college who used to call the effect "The expulsive power of a new affection". He was, of course, talking of the love for Christ driving out the desire for excesses in things like lust, drink, you name it - drugs were not a big thing then, but no doubt he would have included those.

Thank You!  I never made any claims as to the shape of the Earth.  I only consider the possibilities and in truth I do not find the round earth arguments compelling nor convincing.

"how so many people think that all the space agencies in the world are fake, "  Maybe they are??  I know that project Apollo was brought to the world by the same people who gave the world the Viet Nam war.  You can judge people by who they associate with.  Maybe the rest of the space agencies are sociopathic, too.

I am truly curious. Are you saying that all these positive changes in your life occurred as a result of being introduced to the concept of a flat earth or are you simply stating that these changes have occurred since that time? If you are giving your introduction to the concept of a flat earth as the reason for these positive changes I would be very curious as to how that happened.

It isn't so much because I believe in Flat Earth.   I do not know what the shape of the Earth is.   But, I opened my mind to consider that it might be possible.   I certainly reject a lot of what we call modern science including Copernicus.

I just started watching Flat Earth videos. Now my credit card balances are starting to go down.  Lots of other stuff, too.

"When the multitudes laugh at you it only means that you are blessed."

I am not an egotist.  Nor am I a cynical misanthrope.   I do not always get my facts straight and sometimes my emotions get the best of me.  Right now I am not trolling.  I wish everybody in here long life, happiness and prosperity even if I don't like them or agree with them.  I am not superior to anybody.

What has happened to me since being introduced to flat earth:

I have quit smoking pot:  about 10 grams a week. $150 a month or so; varies.

I have quit eating sweets:  easily over $100 a month

I am off my blood pressure medicine.  Don't need it thanks to Flat Earth.

I have quit looking at internet porn.  I love women!  They aren't objects.  They are beautiful spirits who make being human  worth while.

And there's more.  Lots of little things.  I have never been happier in my life because of flat earth.   Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, resentment, envy, cynicism, apprehension about the future, regrets about the past all gone.  Thanks to flat earth.

A lot of people are going through the same sort of experience and the numbers seem to be growing.

I don't know the shape of the Earth.  I do not know the underlying nature of our existence.  I am but a peasant from nowhere.  But nothing in my experience has helped me feel more whole and healthy than Flat Earth!

"“just in case” all my life, get some backbone"  They always have to get their little jabs in.   None of them ever show any wit.

14
It's not that I believe in flat earth.  I simply do not know.  I do not trust those in authority.  If I can be fooled by hoaxers on youtube then I can be fooled by NASA or some other scientific agency.  You  roundheads need to learn to live with the fact that none of you are the last word.  Long Live Flat Earth!  Death to Scientism.  I will say I am enjoying the conversations.  Whether one believes in flat earth or not will have no effect on the quality of their lives.

15
I made the statement, " I can see Chicago from Benton Harbor."   I do not have a first hand account.  I didn't mean to be misleading.  I was just being boneheaded.   Mea Culpa!  But I am convinced because of local news coverage and you tube videos that one can see Chicago from Benton Harbor. Perhaps, I am a fool given to hysteria?  I don't care.  And why would anybody pay attention to a poor old gullible fool like myself?    And I have to be honest about what I feel and I just don't trust any institutional hierarchy.  I don't claim expertise.  I have no agenda except to entertain myself.

It's not that I believe the Earth is flat.  It is that I don't believe the current model.

16
Proponents of the Copernicum model aren't interested in understanding.   They are interested in power.  Me?  I am only interested in a good time and whether the Earth is flat or round makes no difference to me.  But, I think it could be flat and I have seen no compelling evidence from the Roundheads to suggest otherwise.  It isn't about what you know.  It is about who you trust.   And I wouldn't trust any of you round earth proselytes if my life depended on it.  Hell with the  NASA boondoggle!   Roundheads are a bunch of bullies who can't stand it when others don't follow the edicts of their religion.

When the multitudes laugh at you it only means you are blessed!

Indoctrination?  You mean like what all schools and universities do as well as the military?

I can see Chicago from Benton Harbor, Michigan on a clear day.   I can't feel the Earth move even though it is constantly making circles in space.

If you are on a bus, as long as the bus goes straight you can move around on it.  But if it accelerates or makes a corner one would have to hold on to something if they were not seated.  The reason being that the bus is being subjected to a jerk:  J(t)= da/dt ; the 4th derivative on displacement.

Our Earth according to modern science is constantly changing direction and speed as well as traveling around in arcs of various radii.  And nobody ever feels the ground move unless there is an earthquake.  Infer what you will.  But, I wouldn't put it past the scientific community to be dishonest; we all need a paycheck.  Telling lies seems to be what people do best.
  • Learn to count! If v(t) = ds/dt, a = dv/dt then if j(t) = ds/dt; Then your "jerk" is the 3rd derivative of displacement, so where does the "the 4th derivative on displacement" come from?

  • The only accelerations that the a person standing on earth in subject to are gravitation (9.83 m/s2), from earth's rotation (0.034 m/s2) and from earth's orbiting the sun (0.0059 m/s2). These are all constant, though the direction of the minute latter one changes relative to us during the day, so might subject us to a "jerk" of 0.0000004m/s3::) big deal!  ::)
  Pure sophistry.

And you wonder why you "can't feel the Earth move even though it is constantly making circles in space" when the only variable acceleration is 0.06% of the constant one we feel from gravitation.
  ::) Come off it!  ::)

And you claim that you "can see Chicago from Benton Harbor, Michigan on a clear day."  Not just me.   Lots of people can and have made the same claim. That does seem to be very variable!

Mirage of the Chicago Skyline from Grand Mere State Park

Oops, where has Chicago gone?
  More sophistry.

So which is it are just ignorant or are you knowingly trying to exaggerate massively to push your agenda - it really has to be one of the other!

I suggest you try again!

"That does seem to be very variable!"  ?   Did you just make a mistake with you sentence?  What does very variable mean?

"So which is it are just ignorant or are you knowingly trying to exaggerate massively to push your agenda - it really has to be one of the other!"  No it doesn't.   So, you are wrong.
