Video upload site suggestions?
« on: December 03, 2021, 04:28:01 PM »
Hey, I want to uplaod and post some video clips but not to youtube.  I thought to use streamable.com, but the forum does not seem to like them.  You can see here that the embedded player doesn't work.  Does anyone know if this is an issue with streamable or the forum, and how it might be resolved, ideally by just using a different upload site?

A bit of both, and a bit of neither. The easiest way to think about it is to compare the [video] tag to [img]. It takes a video file, and nothing else. [img]https://imgur.com/a/NYDOF7B[/img] won't work because https://imgur.com/a/NYDOF7B is a link to a web page, and not to an image file.

By comparison, something like [video]https://v.omgomg.eu/dole.webm[/video] works fine, because it's a direct link to a video file that I'm hosting on my VPS:

https://v.omgomg.eu/dole.webm

It looks like Streamable only allows to generate direct file links to paid users. I can't immediately think of a service to recommend. Most video hosting sites force you to use their in-website players because that's how they get to serve you ads and/or collect your data.

Out of curiosity, why is YouTube not a workable solution for you?

I don't want the videos to be as easy to find as they are on YouTube.

You can make youtube videos non-searchable and only accessible by link. The wildly popular 'Walk With Thork' series was like that.

Thork beat me to it, but: yes, I suspect that will be by far the easiest way forward, especially since we already have a working youtube embed BBCode.

We could probably cobble something together for Streamable or another service, but I'd prefer not to do so unless it's really necessary. Every small addition is a little bit of extra continuous effort for us to maintain.
