Title: Democratic People's Republic of Korea executes 2nd most powerful man.
Post by: Yaakov ben Avraham on December 15, 2013, 08:38:08 PM
Friday last, the DPRK (North Korea) executed Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Un's uncle by marriage, & 2nd most powerful man in the country. Having been purged twice before (once in the 70's & again in the early 2000's), he was executed for attempting to overthrow the government. It is believed that Kim Il Sung, Jong Un's grandfather & architect of the N. Korean state, may have disapproved of Jang's marriage into the family (hence the purge in the 70's). So, what do you think? Does this radical move portend some great change in the DPRK? What were the real reasons? What about Jang's wife, Kim Jong Un's aunt by blood? Will she be next, or did she aid in Jang's ouster? Any thoughts?

Anyone who says "they know" why he was executed is lying. There is only the government story and it is impossible to say what the truth is.

Surely if Kim Jong-un said he knows why his uncle was executed, he wouldn't be lying. He probably does know. I imagine there are a fair few other people who do, too.

Also, call me radical, but perhaps this time it's as simple as it gets? Perhaps he really did try to stage a coup and was found out before he managed to pull it off?

Maybe, except that I have heard reports before the official announcement saying the Uncle was being tried for debauchery and other assorted offenses, and then heard so-called "political experts" saying the affair was murky at best.  I do not trust any state that does not have a free press, even in principle.

Easier to stay in power forever when there's no competition.
