I don't think accusing your husband or boyfriend of raping you is as solid a plan to get away with abortion as you think it is.

Why does it have to be a husband or boyfriend? "Some guy in the bushes raped me, I never saw his face and it was dead at night, there's no possible way to identify him in any meaningful way." Boom, it's a rape abortion and you'll never prove a false police report in court with such a vague statement to go on. All a rape exception would do is result in a court system with thousands of equally vague reports backlogged and wasting precious justice system resources.

Alright.  That could work.  But if we're treating an abortion as seriously as we treat a murder then the next step would be collecting DNA evidence of the "victim".  And the justice system would naturally be curious if the SO matches this DNA.  In which case then "Hey good news, we've found your rapist and look out!  He's in the house with your now!"

I bet that price is for the bare minimum of service as well. In and out of the hospital in 24-48 hrs, no private room, etc…

Sort of.  That price is if everything goes according to plan.  I've never had this go according to plan.  Kid #3 involved a C section and 30 days in the nicu.  That racked up a bill that went into 6 figures.  I'm insured but still...

That was standard "not according to plan".  No one was going to die.  I'm sure the babies that were in serious trouble, like needing heart surgery or something, would rack up a truly staggering hospital bill.

I really hate the saying that 80% of life is just showing up but I guess Hannity is a good example of it.  Even if you're kind of dim witted, just keep showing up and good things will happen.  Sort of like Forrest Gump.

Some people don't think that is what they were writing:

https://www.fayobserver.com/entertainment/20170316/ruler-of-this-world-god-or-satan

Quote
Ruler of This World: God or Satan?

Many people are surprised by the evil in this world. Do you ever wonder, “If God is good or even exists, why is there so much pain and suffering? Why is it that bad things happen to me even when I work hard and try to be a good person?” I’ll tell you why. The Bible records that while God gave Adam authority over the world, Adam gave it over to Satan.

That’s right; Satan is the temporary ruler of this world:

“Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.” (John 12:31)

“Jesus said, ‘The ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me.’” (John 14:30)

“Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe the Gospel.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)

“We are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil spiritual rulers and authorities, and against mighty powers in this dark world.” (Ephesians 6:12)

“We know that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19) “Who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:5)

God is using Satan’s rebellion to reveal the hearts of men and women. Those who put their faith in God’s salvation will be raised from death and live for eternity with him.

“Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live.” (Galatians 1:4)

“The world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” (1 John 2:16-17)

Why do I say that Satan is the temporary ruler of this world? Because the Bible tells us that Satan’s end has already been determined: “The devil was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:10-15)

Rev. Dr. J. Robert Kretzu is pastor of Hope Mills United Methodist Church

Perhaps the Bible is saying that there is a good God somewhere, but the God of this world isn't it. When God, or the 'Lord', is present and doing things in our world in some passages it's possible that it's not the good one.

Here's where all this confusion comes from.  Most Christians assume that the Bible makes sense, that it's cohesive, that while not written by a single author directly that a supreme being directed it to be written the way it is.

The truth is, and this is not controversial, the Bible is a collection of stories crammed together over thousands of years that were often completely unrelated.  If it seems like the character of God shifts wildly over the course of the Bible its usually because its written about several different gods.

Most Christians can't handle this so they come up with a lot of stupid nonsense trying to reconcile all the contradictions.

I sometimes think that atheists are more interested in the Bible because once you see it's not a great holy book you realize it's a fantastic historical document.  A lot of religious scholars are starting to see it this way.

I have an additional hot take.  They're aware of it but they don't care.  Trying to lead the country sucks.  It's way easier to be the minority party and bittch and mon about the other party.

It's like the baseball episode of South Park.  Where they both hate the game but they can't tell their parents.  So they get amazing at being bad at it.

A great episode.  Definitely worth wtching.

Tesla isn't the only EV/Hybrid manufacturer. Plenty of people could have made the switch a long time ago. They chose not to do so. Toyota has been making reasonably affordable hybrid vehicles that get 40+ MPG for well over a decade now and the majority of vehicles that Americans drive to work cost well over the price of a 10 year old Prius. Those same people are the ones going "oooohhh noooooo gas is toooooo expensive for meeeee noooooow" wow, that's too bad. Maybe one day they will develop the ability to think more than 10 seconds into the future.

Fair enough.  But have you ever driven a Prius?

There are worse things than ending humanity by destroying our planet through climate change.  One would be having to drive a Prius.

It is true that some Americans are idiots who like big trucks with questionable utility.

However "just buy a Tesla" is not something the vast majority of Americans can afford to do.

Similarly, neither is eating the cost of inflated gas prices.

I think you should check your math on that one.

Gas prices were clearly inflated and not due to any scarcity, real or manufactured. Exxon just posted record profits while assuring people it’s prices had to go up because times were so tough.

That's very much a separate issue. If it is truly artificial scarcity, then it needs to be resolved in a way that doesn't involve pissing away ~30% of the entire country's lifeline supplies. The strategic reserve is for when shit hits the fan; when we're getting nuked on one coast and invaded on the other. It's when we need to keep basic services running to prevent mass chaos. It should not be used to resolve short term discomfort.

It's an optics move and not a very good one.  I think it's predicted to bring down the price by like 10 cents a gallon.  On top of that countries like Saudi Arabia can just cut production to undo the effectiveness of this move.

This. And if it is a lost cause then the humanitarian aid will be all the more necessary.

There's an article politico that I can't easily find where they asked these reps why they voted against it.

Most of them said that it gives Biden unchecked power to sanction anyone. I don't know if that's true or not.

Another reason they gave was that this Ukraine thing is distracting from problems here.

The best one I heard as one rep was concerned that Biden would use these powers to force transgendered rights on various parts of the world.

What's costing Dems the most is the ongoing, desperate narrative that the economy is doing great. Biden repeatedly saying he's "added more jobs than any other president ever" is pouring salt on the wound. Repeating talking points with the assumption that your electoral base has actual mental retardation is not going to be popular. The economy is not doing great. Food and energy prices are going through the roof. One remarkable historic event regarding food prices was the time that the French invented a very efficient head chopping machine and started chopping off heads. Dems are lucky the ongoing inflation screwups will only cost them the midterms.

Prices are higher but let's not overstate it.  Other than real estate and cars inflation looks to be around 10%.  Not great, don't get me wrong.  But hardly worth breaking out the guillotines over.

I know republicans are hammering democrats over this.  As they should, democrats are in power so it's up to them to do something.  But I really haven't heard any plans to deal with this from the republicans other than taxing the hell out of poor people.

As far as I can tell this inflation is the result of a massive supply chain disruption.  Some people blame it on covid stimulus packages but the amount of money a country has spent on stimulus and the amount of inflation they're experiencing really don't seem to correlate.  I think it's just something we're going to have to ride out.

Nazism in Ukraine must be so miniscule that they officially named a prolific Nazi a national hero in 2010.
Ah, yes, a Russian puppet president (who was ousted several years later after doing More Bad Things) did a Bad Thing in Ukraine. Therefore, Russia is justified in doing Yet More Bad Things.

It occurs to me that, if we want to tackle Nazism in Ukraine, we'll have to go straight to the source.

Are you saying we need to blow up the statue of Bandera?  That's how we solved in racism in America.

I'm rather shocked that the Democrats plan of doing as little as possible is proving to be unpopular.  Perhaps if they tried to do absolutely nothing they'll have better luck during the next election.
