There were a few threads about this on the old site. For those not in the know, the Political Compass is an attempt to engineer a test that maps political beliefs onto a two-dimensional graph. It's far from perfect, but I find it interesting to see how my views have changed over the years.
See also: http://politicalcompass.org/
I just took this again for the first time in four years, and apparently I'm drifting slowly to the right:
Compare with my previous result (http://img.sjm.so/politicalcompass20110628) from 2011.

Pretty much the same as my previous results.

I'm not sure how accurate this is. How would I end up right in the middle? It makes me the least extreme person so far. I'd have expected a graph like Blankos.
-
Oh, I've seen this before. I won't bother doing it again but I can tell you I am maximal authoritarian. Last I checked it put me right by Hitler and Romney.

I think this matches how I perceive myself pretty accurately.

You also seem to have made exactly the same move as me, albeit in a slightly different place on the compass.
Also, I am the most libertarian person here so far. FES literally wants to live in a dictatorship.

I think I've moved further into the green:
Economic -8.63
Social -7.49

Where's the "No opinion" option? I can't do this test.

-
Well, I did my best. On the questions which I didn't have a definite opinion on, I just randomly clicked agree or disagree. What else could I have done?

Fuck, I'm almost Th*rk. >o<

Damn some serious hippies in here.
-
Yeah, a bit too many hippies. But I've always said I'm a moderate who leans a bit more to the left because I'm not racist, not religious, and think abortions should be legal. I still love a sexy right winger though, but I blame that on growing up in the south. Sexy, manly, country boys are always right.
-
Racism, religion, and abortions have nothing to do with being on the right spectrum because the right spectrum only represents your economic views.
Yeah, you're right. I'm lumping them in together since I'm thinking of just a stereotypical right/left.
I'm a libertarian because of those things, but I'm not too far over on the economic spectrum.

This quiz seemed a lot more opinionated in its questions than others I've seen. I think it used general trends from opinions irrelevant to politics to place people.

Political views that are very distant from the normal are defined as extreme. Thus, they're extremists.

They do mix and match, but generally even if you have one extreme view (no nuclear weapons and no nuclear power ever) then you are considered extremist.

I guess that's where "at least in Australia" comes in. "No nuclear power" is the norm here, and I'd say it's not a long way from that to "no nuclear weapons".

I doubt someone who thinks nuclear power is bad would bother differentiating between types of nuclear power. When you're dealing with people who think nuclear powerplants are all literally chernobyls waiting to happen, there isn't much you can do to assuage them.
-

No. People vote for the party they view as legitimate, as per what the media tells them. If you did a vote compass on everyone in the country, a big portion of people would share views with the Greens. They just don't get voted for because most people think smaller parties are a wasted vote, which is also a huge misconception in Australia as we use preferential voting and not first past the post.

I mean, there are legitimate arguments against nuclear power. Much like organic food and the anti-pharmaceuticals movement there's some valid reasoning mixed in with the idiocy and anti-science.

Get it in line with all the other countries. Here in America, our Congressional approval rating is 15%, but our Congressional incumbency rate is 84%. Can't bother voting for someone else, that'd be a waste.

The problem is those legitimate arguments get washed away when (most) people demanding change don't want change, they want the problem to go away entirely. "No nuclear power/no GMO/no modern medicine" There's no regulatory compromise, they just want it gone.

Yes, well, your idiots that don't care about politics just won't vote. Our idiots are forced to, and will likely go with whatever narrative the media has assisted in pushing.
i.e 1,000 Asylum seekers deciding an election instead of a $40 billion communications network.
-
The Australian anti-nuclear stance is interesting considering they're one of the few uranium-exporting nations (mostly to China.) I wonder how much of the anti-nuke argument is because it's a bigger cash-cow to export uranium than split it?

It isn't terribly surprising that the only military people on here are authoritarian. A libertarian in the military is going to have a bad time. We do have them though. In fact one guy I know doesn't have a cell phone because "the government and NSA can track you" but lives on base. I don't think he sees what is so funny about that.

I play ACE/ARCO in Arma, that totally makes me military.

In fairness, it must be hard to put UKIP on that graph. Their policies are about as solid as the ale that Nigel quaffs. They wanted a flat rate of tax, then scrapped that less than a week after winning the European elections. Every manifesto has had to be re-written from scratch because they can never agree what should go in it.
You could just close your eyes and play 'pin the tail on the compass' as far as UKIP is concerned.
-
Well how about the Labour Party, UKIP and Conservatives all being more right wing than the BNP?
(For those not British)
The British National Party (BNP) is a far-right political party in the United Kingdom.
That chart doesn't mean anything. Its a gimmick. Its not a true representation of people's political spectrums.
-
That chart doesn't mean anything. Its a gimmick. Its not a true representation of people's political spectrums.
Yes, because politics is inherently two-dimensional and there is only one way to interpret someone's policies in order to plot them on a graph.
-
If you are going to try to term parties as left or right wing, you'd think there would be some effort to put the right wing parties on the right, and the left wing parties on the left. As I say, if not, these charts are meaningless.
-
If you are going to try to term parties as left or right wing, you'd think there would be some effort to put the right wing parties on the right, and the left wing parties on the left. As I say, if not, these charts are meaningless.
Indeed, and the right-wing parties are right of centre, and the left-wing parties are left of centre. However, when you add a second axis to give a more expressive representation of political views, some factors that would formerly have contributed to an extreme left-right positioning get transmuted to an extreme up-down positioning, such that the relative positions of parties on the left-right scale may change. You will notice that, although the BNP's leaning towards the right is fairly diminutive, they are very extremely authoritarian (moreso than any of the other parties), suggesting that the reasons for their classification as a "far-right" party are mainly social rather than economic.
Now, I'm not familiar enough with British politics to state definitively that this positioning is accurate. However, I can tell you that you can't expect a broad categorisation made using a one-dimensional political spectrum to apply on a two-dimensional extension. If you want to criticise their left-right positioning on the political compass, you're going to have to point to specific economic policies that support a free market, rather than citing a vague statement of their position on some other political scale.
I don't know what makes this particularly difficult for you to grasp, but please try to think before you type. I'm getting bored of explaining the obvious to you.
-
I really wonder how people can associate authoritarianism with freedom of market. The USSR was authoritarian as fuck, did they qualify as right wing?
I wish people would just use the left-right axis in terms of economic policies. Anything more than that and you're getting into meaningless buzzword territory. Finland's populist party, for instance, is most commonly characterised as extreme right-wing despite them being one of the more socialistic parties in Finland.
Basically, fuck politics. Nobody ever says what they mean and mean what they say.
-
I really wonder how people can associate authoritarianism with freedom of market.
Probably simply because, in most Western countries, most political parties are aligned roughly along a diagonal line from left-wing libertarian to right-wing authoritarian. I do agree that it makes no sense, but people probably just got used to the right-wing parties being authoritarian and the left-wing parties being libertarian and then associated those together.
-

That chart doesn't mean anything. Its a gimmick. Its not a true representation of people's political spectrums.
By several measures, the BNP is more left-wing than the Tories or even Labour. They want trade controls over foreign goods, prosecution of the bankers associated with the '08 crash, "the renationalisation of monopoly utilities and services", "- The creation of a bulk transport tax regime that pushes supermarkets to supply more local and seasonal produce;" a fully public NHS, "Take all privatised social housing stock back under local democratically controlled council ownership," etc.
Being 'right wing' in terms of social policy does not imply being right-wing economically.

You just happen to love freedom a little less than last year

Basically I love a different kind of freedom!
Taxation is theft, and theft is not freedom.
You just happen to love freedom a little less than last year
It's probably because I can never decide between the "strong" and not strong answers.

Taxation is theft, and theft is not freedom.
Taxation is infrastructure, infrastructure is necessary, taxation is necessary.

Both of your premises are wrong. How remarkable.

Seems I have taken a step to the right in the last 3 years. I now find myself in the Tom Bishop/Rushy camp.
I feel the test does conflate too many things though. I'd expect to be far more libertarian. From a state point of view, I think the government should really not be involved in people's lives at all. But I think children should be parented and I think criminals should be punished as personal responsibility is important in order to have freedom. I like freedom, not anarchy.
I guess the move to the right is because I've become more fed up with so much socialism (theft) and the left impinging on people's freedoms. But most people move right as they get older so ...
I'd also guess that some things I weren't so sure of in the past, I've made my mind up on in the mean time and have a few more stronglys than last time. I also wonder if the algorithm may have been teaked as things that were once considered centrist are now considered right wing as the western world has lurched to the left.
My graph from 2015

I am more authoritarian than libertarian, libertarianism is a meme that relies on everyone holding hands and getting along.
I'm also in favour of government regulations on the free market so I think it placed me fairly.

It must suck, or they're desperate for views.

What am I supposed to do with that response?
I've lined up a witty retort, I'm gonna flame you so hard that people in India will feel the heat of that burn and you deleted your account. ???
I can't go supernova on you when you aren't around to cry about it afterwards. It ruins it for me. >o<

So this is the political compass in the UK ... apparently. This was clearly compiled by someone who has no political bias whatsoever.
The Conservative party are the new Nazi party.
There is nothing to distinguish between UKIP and the Conservatives. They are both evil right wing authoritarians.
Add the DUP to that list. They sided with the Tories, they must be Nazis too.
Somehow the libdems are right wing. Tory lite.
Labour are moderate left wing libertarians. You should trust them with all your money.
The SNP who wish to disregard Brexit, disregard the last Scottish referendum, leave the UK and run a one party state completely unchallenged in Scotland, are only mildly authoritarian centrists.
The green party who want to ban cars, ban cheap fossil fuel power, ban meat, impose environmental taxes, ramp up hate speech prosecutions and rip up article 50 without a vote are the most tolerant freedom loving party in the UK.
Hopefully now everyone is clued in.

I wonder how you'd have to answer to get your spot at 0,0 on the chart - exact center of all four quadrants.
And what would that mean?

There were a few threads about this on the old site. For those not in the know, the Political Compass is an attempt to engineer a test that maps political beliefs onto a two-dimensional graph. It's far from perfect, but I find it interesting to see how my views have changed over the years.
See also: http://politicalcompass.org/
I just took this again for the first time in four years, and apparently I'm drifting slowly to the right:

Compare with my previous result (http://img.sjm.so/politicalcompass20110628) from 2011.
I seem to be slipping left. I used to be almost exactly center on both axis
