Flat Earth Theory / The Force of Sun
« on: January 23, 2019, 06:57:26 PM »
Quote
A total solar eclipse occurred on May 29, 1919. With the duration (...) of 6 minutes 51 seconds, it was the longest recorded solar eclipse since May 27, 1416. A longer total solar eclipse would later occur on June 8, 1937, lasting for 7 minutes and 4 seconds.

(...)

On that day, during the eclipse, two independent expeditions measured positions of stars in the constellation Taurus. One, situated on the island Principe (off the west coast of Africa), was led by Sir Francis Watson Dyson and Sir Arthur Eddington, the other, led by Andrew Claude de la Cherois Crommelin and Charles Rundle Davidson, settled in Sobral, Brazil.

Both confirmed Albert Einstein's prediction of the bending of light caused by the Sun to be correct.

Since then, these kinds of experiments have been repeated with the same results. My question is: do FEers find these measurements (that the stars' positions changed due to the Sun's presence) valid?
If yes, do you think that the deflection was caused by the Sun bending the spacetime?

Flat Earth Theory / Sunlight in the Bipolar FE model
« on: April 21, 2018, 03:06:47 PM »
Dear FE community,
Could you, please, help me understand why, if the FE was bipolar, the Sun would illuminate the Earth's surface in such a manner pictured below? Thank you.¨

Flat Earth Theory / Trajectories of Stars
« on: April 18, 2018, 02:23:36 PM »
Recently, I've read the FES wiki page and some forum threads on this topic. Nevertheless, since most of the comments didn't really answer anything and since I have a slightly different question, I'd like to ask you: how does the FET explain the observed trajectories of stars (see the images below)? I'm particularly interested in how there could be two apparent celestial poles.

Flat Earth Theory / The Eötvös Effect
« on: April 18, 2018, 12:30:56 PM »
I've touched this topic a couple of times before. Nevertheless, with regard to the quality of response and since I've nothing about it on the Wiki, I'd like to discuss it once more.

How does the FET explain the Eötvös effect? By celestial gravitation?

Flat Earth Theory / The Circumference of the Equator
« on: April 17, 2018, 07:25:00 PM »
I've found two cities that are located almost precisely at the equator (and I know that since on equinoxes the Sun is directly overhead in those cities)- São Tomé and Libreville.
Using differences in sunrise/solar noon/sunset times (circa 11,5 minutes) I was able to determine the size of the ∠SãoTomé-NorthPole-Libreville (equal to the difference of longitudes) to be circa 2,875°
The distance between São Tomé and Libreville is 302,1 km (as the crow flies).

All of this data allows me to estimate the circumference of the equator: I can simply multiply 302,1 by 360°/2,875° and get 37 828 km.
(Yes, I'm well aware that this is a simplification. That's why I've also calculated this the correct but a bit more complicated way. I've got 37 832 km.)

Does the community of the FES agree? Should I add a more detailed description of my calculations?

EDIT: I've assumed the Earth to be flat and unipolar and the path of the Sun on equinoxes to be circular.
EDIT2: Since the cities are a little bit to north of the actual equator the definite circumference is even larger (not by much though).

Flat Earth Theory / Speed of The Sun
« on: April 08, 2018, 12:52:34 PM »
A question for the FES members: has anyone directly (i. e. via radar, laser or so) measured the speed (or distance) of the Sun, the Moon or any other celestial body? If not, why?

Flat Earth Theory / Universal Acceleration Flaws
« on: March 26, 2018, 08:28:56 AM »
FE UA cannot explain different gravitational accelerations. Even if individual parts of Earth would accelerate differently, the gravitational acceleration also depends on your altitude, whether you are moving west or east (the Eötvös effect), and so on.

Furthermore, even a slight difference of acceleratooinionion would soon tear the Earth apart. For you to get an idea: in not even 15 minutes of accelerating from zero velocity the elevation difference between Mount Huascaran and the Arctic Ocean, the areas with the most extreme gravitational accelerations, would be larger than between the bottom of the Mariana Trench and Mt Everest on the stationary Earth and in 29 hours it would be 384 000 km, the same as the mean distance between the Earth and the Moon in the heliocentric model.

How does the FE society explain these things?

Flat Earth Theory / Supersonic Airplanes?
« on: March 21, 2018, 07:58:51 AM »
Flights from Melbourne to Auckland take 3 hours and 35 minutes. In the FE model, airplanes would have to fly faster than the speed of sound to accomplish that. However, commercial airplanes, such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, cannot exceed the speed of sound. Could any FE believer explain me this situation?

Flat Earth Theory / Radii of Certain Circles of Latitude
« on: March 20, 2018, 06:58:32 PM »
Is there any formula for calculating the radius of a certain circle of latitude?
I've read that each latitude degree is 69.5 miles further from the North Pole. Is it correct?

Flat Earth Theory / Circumference of Certain Circles of Latitude
« on: March 20, 2018, 09:09:57 AM »
Is there any formula for calculating the circumference of a FE circle of latitude? Thank you.

EDIT: I've read that each latitude degree increases the circumference by about 437 miles. Is it correct?
