I Hate Linux Distros
« on: January 20, 2015, 04:51:42 AM »
They are literally the worst. Now that the sensationalism is out of the way, I am going to bitch and moan. To be honest, it really isn't the fault of Linux or even any Unix-type system. I live out of my MacBook, but I am no ParsiBSD. The only time I am in the command line is for scripting or configuring various network routers and switches. And the only time I screw around with other *nix systems is when Parsinix is on IRC talking about some new thing he is doing. I run a 99.5% Windows server shop on vSphere and Dell hardware.

We have a massive (for us) new software package being implemented. 7 app servers behind a load balancer with a variety of database and web servers in the mix. They all run Windows, except this one shitty server. The vendor was supposed to handle the configuration, but they turned out to be more incompetent than I could have anticipated. It is a web server of sorts. The only info I had was the IP which was the one thing the vendor didn't screw up. After finally getting the login credentials I was able to SSH in. I had no idea what distro, what web server was running or any other detail. After recalling what I thought were forgotten skills, I identified a system running RHEL 6 and some old shitty version of Tomcat. It needed an SSL cert. So I dicked around using a horrible process to generate a keystore and then a CSR. I got the cert, ran the nonsensical commands to instal the cert and restarted the web server. Then I had to dump the VM in the DMZ (to keep people like Pizaa out of my network) and do a bunch of shitty network config.

Jesus Christ the process is so much simpler on Windows server running IIS. And also not vulnerable to Heartbleed. If you made it this far, I am sorry. tl;dr

Tomcat

I found your problem.

Yeah, that is what was grinding my gears for the most part.

I'm using Ubuntu with the Plasma desktop environment. Shit's kind of cash.

Ok it's not cash. I realize the GUI is kind of an afterthought in Linux, but this looks like they picked a random person shopping at Walmart to design it.

How am I supposed to know that beforehand? Usually people learn by trying things.

I hate MS Windows! When is this fucked up planet going to get its shit together and move to a Linux platform!

OK... I feel better now.

Every iteration of Windows pisses me off more and more. People who won't show their source code want my email address just to boot up their OS. They make it harder every year to run a Windows machine without a Microsoft account.             F00k dat.

I rip Cortana out of the registry, delete and kill it but it still sends spam to my inbox. I don't need malware emailing me to 'Have a great Thursday!'

Oh! and BTW, that 'free' Windows 10 upgrade is shit! It's a 32 bit version of Windows 10. WTF! What idiot thinks we need or want a 32 bit version of any Windows anymore! And this punk-ass version is still packed with garbageware constipating my system.

In every new version, they take out features I use and add crap I will never use.

Many of the new Linux distros have polished GUIs that will allow even the most tech-illiterate primate to find porn and order crap on Amazon. I would have switched every computer in my life to Linux except that most of the world only speaks 'Windows'. There are so many hardware peripherals I use that won't interact with Linux that I'm stuck with Windows. Microsoft has me by the balls and I hate them for it.

I don't use my email to log into windows.  I use a local account.
Cortana is off and I don't get cortana emails into my gmail.
I got the 64 bit free upgrade.  Not sure why you didn't.

Linux is a collection of 200 people who decided to make an OS by themselves and hope it works together.  Its an ungodly mess of cobbled together shit that barely works with one distro version and may work with others, unless the person maintaining it decides to change it for no reason.

There is no QA.  No standardization.  You have as many repositories as distros.

Most Linux distros are crap because they're made by people who don't work together.
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.

I think Microsoft may be fucking with me personally and specifically. There's this shit in the TOS about not using Microsoft products to mess with Microsoft. That's why they want you to have an account they can watch. Years ago, I reposted a Bill Gates meme and ever since, every Windows upgrade and update has screwed me over.

I dare say, the issue seems to be your friend in that case. The rest of your post is quite the hot take that seems to be built on the idea that Linux is some sort of monolithic entity that just sucks at working as a team. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but it appears to be stacked upon some ideas that don't really hold universally. At least not anymore... the Linux scene of 20 years ago is a different story entirely. I remember installing Yellow Dog on an old iMac. That was a mess.

Arguing about which of Windows or Linux is better is like trying to decide whether to order a shit sandwich or a turd burger.

No, they recently changed the installer so that if you install with a network connection, you have to use a Microsoft account. If you don't know about this in advance, the installer also won't let you go back and deconfigure your network to avoid that step. But if you already have an existing installation, you don't get forcibly "upgraded" (as far as I know).

That just sounds like user error. Most web servers and IoT devices run on Linux. I reinstall Windows from time to time, but that's because I have random shit all over the place that I don't want to manually clean up. That's not the fault of the OS.

He uses Seus and my understanding is that he needs to reinstall to do major updates.

You mean OpenSuse? He's doing something wrong.

Suse is mostly focused on the enterprise server market. It's pretty stable and easy to upgrade. OpenSuse is more community supported than the enterprise version, and it is still easy to upgrade and pretty stable from what I've seen although I haven't used it nearly as much as some other distros.

If you really mean Seus, I'm entirely unfamiliar with what that might be.

Yeah, that.  OpenSuse.

Also driver support is shit.  Like half the time when we chat via google hangouts, he had to restart it because his camera came up with bad colors.

Only if the job requires linux.
Or your resume is lacking alot of stuff. (Ie. Just finished school)

IMO it depends on who's looking at your CV. A random HR drone might not know any better and just count whatever exams you've listed. A technically-minded person will be more impressed if you say you can cook.

Yeah, it wasn't that difficult, even for someone with hardly any linux background. Although, since I don't have any paid IT experience, my thinking is that the benefit it would provide on a resume is greater than 0.
