Flat Earth Community / Re: Earth seem from 1 million miles.

The sun and the moon are up there, so why not some satellites? A point difference may be whether or not people are actually on the "ISS."

You need to know the altitude of the satellite (and azimuth obviously) to aim the dish. Otherwise you won't get a signal. In the case of a geostationary satellite, the altitude is approximately 22,236 miles. This is in conflict with a lot of FE models but is verified every time someone in a different location aims a satellite dish at the same satellite. You only need three dishes to confirm you are pointing to the same coordinate in 3D space though.

Flat Earth Projects / Re: Compiling Objections

Under properties of the sun, you could add "observed azimuth". It's something so basic that it's witnessed first hand by everyone on Earth and all the Flat Earth models that I've seen have no relation to what people actually observe. For example, on Christmas Day where I live (Melbourne, Australia) when I woke up to see what presents Santa had brought me the sun was 120°ESE. I can't confirm first hand but I believe it's roughly the same azimuth in Santiago and Johannesburg at Christmas too.

Under properties of the sun, there's also the constant size of the sun throughout the day.

Under properties of the stars, you could mention the different set of stars in the Southern Hemisphere rotating around the South Celestial Pole.

Edmund Halley's Transit of Venus experiment is another really good one, but maybe that's getting too technical.

Changing height of observer brings objects over the curve back into view.

This list is sounding a bit like an ideal wiki?

Yeah, I'm struggling with the claim you make there are 312 such flights a year.

No way, no how, there are that many people interested in making a trip from South Africa to Australia in a year, let alone virtually every day.

No justification for the flight to even exist.

Have you ever visited here (Australia)? How do you know how many people want to go to South Africa?

Do you realise that our national sporting teams (cricket and rugby in particular) play in South Africa all the time, and theirs here? There are reporters at both Sydney and Johannesburg airports that watch them leave and arrive. And I'm still not sure about how you think the airport gates work. There's a gate allocated at both airports 6 days a week for people boarding and arriving on QF63/64. Does this just sit empty and no-one notices? And you know that a lot of people use Flight Radar, Flight Aware, the airport's website, etc, to see when to arrive at the airport to pick people up? Do they just turn up at the airport and the passengers aren't there? And this happens 312 times a year and no-one notices? Because all of these sites have the flight landing around 13-15 hours after it left.

It's really, really bizarre that you think these flights don't exist and I'm not sure why you'd even think that.

Everyone knows the stuff you post in support of this supposed long distance flight does not really exist.

This route is flown 312 times a year. In fact, people are boarding at gate 57 right now.

Could you please tell me how you think this works? Do they have an empty gate in a busy international airport for an hour every day and no-one notices, not even the private company (Sydney Airport Holdings) that owns the airport? Or maybe tens of thousands of actors file through the gate every year and are whisked away in buses, and an empty plane takes off? Or they actually fly but the flight is mysteriously 15 hours late every day, despite all other information - flight radar, Johannesburg Airport website (http://www.johannesburg-airport.com/arrivals.html), etc - saying it arrives around 4:35pm local time? No-one at that end notices that the plane doesn't arrive or no passengers disembark?

I'm really struggling with this one.

The oldest satellite still in orbit has been up there more than 60 years. It's going to take a lot of energy to hover in the atmosphere that long.

The satellite we use in Australia for satellite television, Optus C1, has been up there since 2003. It's in geostationary orbit just North West of Papua New Guinea at an altitude of around 36000kms (this altitude is the optimal point where its orbit matches Earth's rotation). This is important to know so that you can point your satellite dish at the right place in the sky. Usually an installer will do it for you but if you travel around in a caravan or a motorhome (I think Americans call them trailers and RVs), you'll have to do it yourself at each new location. And guess what - point it at the right place in the sky with the right azimuth and the right elevation and you receive a TV signal, point it anywhere else and you don't. This particular satellite is also used in South East Asia and Hawaii. You could of course receive the signal from a ship in the South Pacific if you wanted to as well. If I had to advance a theory, I'd say that this satellite - and the other 5000 up there - are in space, up to tens of thousands of kilometres above the Earth, exactly where they are claimed to be. And if I had to guess, I'd say that whatever force is keeping those moons of Jupiter that we can see with a telescope orbiting around that planet is what is keeping these satellites orbiting around the Earth too.

As to your question about alternate theories to explain this - maybe thousands and thousands of disguised ground based stations or hovering drones? But then the satellite dishes themselves would have to be fake because they only work when pointed at exactly the right elevation. You can't fake elevation with a satellite dish - if the signal is coming from a different elevation, it won't be reflected onto the feed horn. So the dishes would have to have hidden antennas but be programmed only to work if the dish was pointed at the correct coordinates. It would have to have GPS too to be able to determine the location and hence the correct coordinates for that location. Now the range would be quite restricted by these hidden antennas so we're probably going to need tens of thousands of stations now. All the way from Western Australia to Hawaii. And all these fake satellite dishes with hidden antennas would have to be precisely engineered so certain circuitry could never, ever fail because if a TV picked up a signal while the dish was pointed in the wrong direction, the whole conspiracy involving all the other satellites would be revealed. Of course, no-one could ever open them up and look inside either. I do try to keep an open mind about these things but it's actually really hard to come up with a viable alternate theory in this case.

Flat Earth Theory / Re: cone sun possible???
« on: March 07, 2019, 01:53:27 AM »
A conical sun still would have various degrees of oblateness to anyone not experiencing local noon - that is, if the glowing face of the sun were flat. With a curved face (teardrop-shaped sun?), it would be possible to view it as a universally circular disk.

A curved shape that appears circular to observers viewing at different solar altitude and azimuth is impossible. In fact, I'd go further and say there is no curved shaped that would appear circular to different observers on just one of those coordinate systems. For example, if that curved shape appeared circular to someone viewing the sun with a solar altitude of 45 degrees, it would appear squashed (an oval) at 90 degrees, and vice versa. A cone sun is not possible, nor is a projected or reflected cone sun. Nor is a projected or reflected sun of any shape on any surface or layer for that matter.
