iTunes gave away this song for free around...three years ago, and I either just got around to actually listening to it the other day or I had once before three years ago and didn't like it, but holy cow I love this song now. His vocals remind me of Tom Waits, but the music itself is very different and very nice. I wish I'd gotten back to this sooner.

I found this really nifty way to play the game so that its more Christian.

This is the band I'm going to see in May. The pianist started it and they do different vintage styles of pop songs. Casey Abrams is one of many singers they use but I hope he's with them in Nashville.

Has anyone listened to this album yet, MBV?
It has some very interesting and off-the-wall tracks, even for My Bloody Valentine. It's not quite as good as Loveless, Isn't Anything, or even their earlier work before that, but it's certainly unique and somehow manages to be more of the same simultaneously. Tracks like "Is this and yes" are especially different from their earlier material, focusing more on synthesizers and throwing out guitars completely. Overall, I'm still warming up to this album, but it's better than what I was expecting from a new album by them after all this time. They certainty haven't lost their touch.

Rooster is right on all counts, not Muse's best but the girl is hypnotically beautiful.
Crud' I can understand why they would put a bunch of jazz players in a bus and push it off a cliff, it's probably a bit insensitive to record it though.
And now Portishead, beth has the same black dead eyes as the girl in the Muse vid' and I love her.

I just got done listening to Boudewijn de Groot's first two studio albums, Boudewijn de Groot and Voor de Overlevenden. Being folk rock straight out of the mid-1960s, it's very similar in style to a lot of American and English bands from that era, although the lyrics are entirely in the Dutch language. I'm familiarising myself with Dutch language material in the hope of improving my Dutch prior to moving to Amsterdam (http://forum.tfes.org/index.php?topic=3887).
I can't understand enough of the words yet to know what the music is about, with the exception of the translated English songs, such as "Het Geluid van Stilte" ("The Sound of Silence"). However, I have been picking up on random words I know throughout each song, sometimes enough to piece together a snippet of meaning somewhere.
Musically, it isn't especially interesting, although it's not bad. I probably wouldn't be listening to this by choice if it were in English, but it does have the appeal of using a lot of basic Dutch words, so it should be easy to gain an understanding of these lyrics fairly soon.
-
I listened to Jeeper's Jumbo today and it sucked.

Today I listened to Picknick, another Dutch language album by Boudewijn de Groot. This one, from 1968, is very heavily inspired by the success of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. In addition to the psychedelic influence, though, there's a lot more stylistic variety than on his prior albums, including a timid foray into the world of jazz on side B.
There are lots of nice tracks here, and this will definitely bear repeated listening in the future, hopefully as I improve my understanding of Dutch so I can figure out what the fuck it's about.
-
Boudewijn de Groot - Nacht en Ontij (1969)
If Picknick was Boudewijn's Sgt. Pepper, this is his Thick as a Brick. While not quite as masterfully crafted as that record, there does seem to be some kind of fantasy narrative here, and I'm sure I'll gain a greater understanding of what it is as my Dutch improves.
Most of this album is taken up by the 25-minute epic "Heksensabbath", which actually consists of lots of fairly short parts, some with very little musical content. At times, it's just Boudewijn delivering a monologue to the sound of a thunderstorm or a beating drum. At others, multiple clashing melodies are mixed together in odd ways. Wikipedia says this album was inspired by an LSD trip, and I'm inclined to believe that.
The other tracks are "Babylon", which started the album on the original vinyl, and "Wie Kan Me Nog Vertellen"/"Aeneas Nu", which made up a separate single back in 1969 and were grafted onto the start of this album for the CD release. They're all enjoyable, but nothing to write home about.
The one thing all of these pieces have in common is that they are significantly darker than de Groot's previous work. It seems like he was making a conscious effort to leave behind the hippy image he had crafted for himself with his popular protest song "Welterusten Mijnheer de President" and Picknick, and create something more musically serious. In any case, I'm rapidly learning that Boudewijn is not a one-trick pony as his debut album would suggest, and that each new album contains new surprises. I'm looking forward to his '70s work.

I love these people.
-
Boudewijn de Groot - Hoe Sterk is de Eenzame Fietser (1973)
Appropriately entitled "How Strong is the Lonesome Cyclist", this is a fantastic collection of Dutch pop rock songs that I could easily see becoming a favourite of mine. It's a little slow to start, but the second half is just full of catchy beats and melodies, with lyrics that I can even come close to understanding some of the time.
This is also Boudewijn's first record to make guitar solos (and, in the case of the last track, a violin solo) a prominent feature, firmly cementing its place as a '70s dadrock classic. I suspect this would have been a hit in more places around the world if the lyrics were in English, but I'm not complaining -- it's nice to have such listenable material to familiarise myself with Dutch.
-
Boudewijn de Groot - Waar Ik Woon en Wie Ik Ben (1975)
This album, bookended by two songs titled "Waar Ik Woon" ("Where I Live") and "Wie Ik Ben" ("Who I Am"), appears (as far as my limited grasp of Dutch will allow me to infer) to be an autobiographical concept album. The instrumentation is somewhat different from his previous works, with piano and organ playing a substantially greater part, although much of the middle section (starting with the almost Lennon-esque "Moeder") is just Boudewijn singing and playing guitar.
The construction of songs is also more interesting on this album, however, with less repetitive structure (his early albums have a lot of verse/chorus/verse/chorus going on), which enabled me to appreciate it even though it's quite obviously rich in lyrical detail that I can't yet absorb. Definitely another one to come back to, methinks.

Boudewijn de Groot - Van Een Afstand (1980)
Boudewijn de Groot - Maalstroom (1984)
I enjoyed these less than his earlier albums; they had some good songs, but seemed overall less consistent. It seems to be a trend that a lot of artists popular in the '60s and '70s got markedly worse into the '80s, regardless of country of origin. I'm not sure why.
That said, they're not bad albums, just more enjoyable as background music than anything else. I probably won't listen to these very often, since I'm more interested in Dutch language material that does hold my interest so I can listen to the words, but I'll be giving them a second go at some point.

-
Boudewijn de Groot - Een Nieuwe Herfst (1996)
Pretty much the same deal as his '80s stuff. Some good songs, but overall not nearly as good as his earlier albums.
-
Boudewijn de Groot - Het Eiland in de Verte (2004)
Well, this was a lot better than the past three albums. It dragged on a bit at times, but overall it had quite a lot of charcater, owing mainly to Boudewijn's foray into traditional pop and show tune-style pieces. From the sprawling intro "Berlijn" ("Berlin") to the Sinatraesque closing number "Het Einddoel" ("The End Goal" or "The Final Destination", I'm not sure which fits better), this album could do with a little flab being culled, but otherwise is a very enjoyable listen. I will be coming back to this one for sure.
-
Lenteman en de Boogie Man - Kaas (2013)
A Dutch language album I found on Jamendo (https://www.jamendo.com/album/127906/kaas), the title means "cheese", and the content is anything but. This is a fantastic collection of varied songs, from the opening "Lekker" ("Tasty"), which is just a conversation mainly consisting of people repeating the words "kaas" and "lekker", to the incredibly juvenile "Ik Denk de Hele Dag Aan Sex" ("I Think About Sex All Day"), which consists mainly of the same lyric repeated over and over for 2 minutes.
There are some more conventional songs in between the bizarre here, with "Een Stijve Lul" ("A Stiff Cock") and "Beffen Met een Baard" (which has a couple of possible translations, though "Cunnilingus With a Beard" seems most likely on this album) being highlights. The whole thing was very enjoyable, and I'm looking forward to understanding more of these lyrics, because this seems like a great way to learn the parts of the language that Duolingo doesn't teach.
I also noticed that the people who made this seem to have a different accent compared to what I'm used to hearing. It was particularly noticeable in the "ei" in "meisje" and the "oe" in "schoenen", although it's possible they were actually singing different words I don't know yet and I misheard. In any case, it's nice to have exposure to more than Duolingo's robotic voice and Boudewijn de Groot.
I'll probably listen again at some point soon and write a proper review on Jamendo, because this is great stuff.
-
Soep en Broodjes - Kootje (https://www.jamendo.com/album/43527/kootje) (2009)
This was a tricky one to find a translation for. Apparently it means something like "small bone", referring to bones in the fingers and toes. I have no idea why someone would write a song about bones, but it isn't very interesting anyway.
-
Richel Bilderbeek - Vijf Jaar Richel (https://www.jamendo.com/album/88321/vijf-jaar-richel) (2011)
This is the most boring music I've ever heard. I got up to track 7 of 24 before I couldn't take it anymore and hit stop.
-
Boudewijn de Groot - Lage Landen (2007)
This wasn't bad, but aside from "Achter de Hemelpoort" ("Beyond Heaven's Gate"), a nice uptempo blues number, there's not much here that isn't rehashing the same old style from his previous albums. I probably won't be listening again.
-
Boudewijn de Groot - Curiosa (2009)
A collection of odds and ends that is actually a lot more interesting than the previous few albums I listened to, including some live radio segments and alternate takes of older songs. Well worth listening to.
Het Gloren - Glorie 123 (https://www.jamendo.com/album/64920/glorie-123) (2010)
This was okay. It had some good songs (I liked "De Overzeeballade" in particular), but I probably wouldn't listen to the whole thing again. Jamendo tends to be very hit-and-miss like that.
-
Grimes - Visions
Starts off well enough with Infinite Love Without Fulfillment, a nice short track with some reasonably harmonically interesting vocal lines. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn’t seem to so much as reach even that fairly basic level again, Symphonia IX being a single exception to this rule. The remaining tracks feature Grimes going through the motions with tired vocal lines while the background changes only on a superficial level, the album being an essentially static collection of vaguely different variations on the same basic idea. It isn’t unpleasant (most of it is perfectly serviceable toe-tapping fare) and while it might go on a little too long it ends before it can transgress the border between slightly awkward lingering and annoyingly hanging around, unfortunately I just don’t find it very interesting to listen to. That said, I feel like if Grimes can get past the redundancy factor that overwhelms what interesting material might otherwise be on offer here, there is an interesting mature artist waiting to come out somewhere down the line.

Currently enjoying Red's Release the Panic album.
It's a pretty solid record. The band has their usual features: gritty guitar tones, a few ballads and a few hard rockers, high and low dynamics, clean vocals with moments of screaming, et cetera. However, the band takes a more straightforward approach in creating songs, utilizing shorter song structures which keeps the album moving along at a relatively quick clip. They also experiment with electronic elements, ditching their former keyboard accompaniment in favor of atmospheric sounds that tie directly into the vocals and guitars. These changes they've implemented, along with the album being their fourth, make the record feel like a more mature and well-rounded effort.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. To me, it's such a fascinating record. It doesn't get any more prog-y than this album: the aesthetics of metal, the unpredictability of jazz, the technicality of classical.
It's a shame the band hasn't done anything else.

I'm listening to their Unquestionable Presence album, and it's pretty solid.
It has an almost jazz-y feel, interesting rhythms, and a vocalist that reminds me of Zetro from Exodus with a bit more grit and growl. Also, the technicality is plenty impressive.

Three of the most beautiful Beatles songs, written for them by Adorno, three masterpieces.

When George Martin heard the songs Adorno had composed for the Beatles in late 1966, he knew instantly that nothing like them had been written before, and that it would make the Beatles by far the greatest rock group ever. For the past 50 years no one has come even close to writing/orchestrating something like Eleanor Rigby or Tomorrow Never Knows, not to mention what is in my opinion the most advanced Beatles song, Magical Mystery Tour.
The following rendition of Strawberry Fields captures the essential moment (when John goes from 'Cause I'm Going - To), the magic of the song. Adorno not only provided the music (a modified Bach's Air Suite combined with Pachelbel's Canon) but also the entrancing orchestration, as he did for Within You, Without You. That is why no one else has been able to duplicate the sound of the Beatles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54gFJLixX2w
Penny Lane is a modified Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21; again its spellbinding beauty is extraordinary.
Both Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields were originally planned to be included on Sgt. Pepper; it was George Martin who weighed against the idea, a decision he later deeply regretted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcyZd_7Toek
This track by Eddie Hazel and Funkadelic brings to my mind the post-Civil War Reconstruction which ended in 1877 with a betrayal of the blacks and poor whites in the American South by the backstabbing Republican Party who conspired with the racist Confederate southern Democrats. This brings to mind the Stalinist doctrine of a future restitution in which the black and poor of the South take power including both autonomous sovereignty and the right to self determination (or secession) if they so chose - free from the local southern bourgeois oppressors & also free from colonialism and exploitation from the north - free from the power of the capitalist state in Washington, DC.
