The easiest way to get on IRC is to use the web chat (https://irc.tfes.org/).
If you'd prefer to use a real IRC client, here are the details:
Server: irc.tfes.org
Port: 7000 (requires SSL)
Chat room: #theflatearthsociety
Note for newcomers: This IRC channel is mostly used for light socialising and posting memes. If you want to ask questions about Flat Earth Theory, please do so on the forum.
If you are interested in having a channel for Flat Earth-related discussion, please create a thread in Suggestions & Concerns so we can gauge interest. It is not out of the question, but currently there are not enough people on IRC who are interested for it to be worthwhile.
-
Thanks. Sticky'd.
-
Alas, it still doesn't work for me. I don't understand how IRC suddenly became so much more technical and complicated.
-
I got it to work on mIRC by using the direct URL. It wouldn't let me connect to either irc.relic.net or tauri.relic.net on any ports.
-
I can't install mIRC because I'm missing "msvcp110.dll," whatever the fuck that is.

You'll need this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679
Also HexChat (http://hexchat.github.io/) is a pretty good IRC client imo.

I can't install that for the exact same reason.

Wait, how? That should provide the dll you're missing ???
-
I need the thing I'm missing to install the thing I'm missing. It's terrible.
-
I don't even care to find out what you're doing wrong, but I'm sure you're doing something wrong.
When in doubt, delete system32.
-
Reinstall your OS, sadaam.
Or better yet, install Gentoo.

Use xchat Saddam, that works fine for me

I had the same issue you did Saddam, but the Microsoft link pp provided allowed me to download it.

Just reinstall Windows already.

Install a remote desktop program and give me access.

Just a suggestion, but an irc chat thing could be in the header of this forum.
Upside is easy and everyone gets to be part of the discussion as it happens live. This i really like. + its not saved so you can be a bit more out there.
Downside is it is more moderation.
But it may well be fun. If it can be done, why not trial it? Putting everything in one place is simpler and easy for users.

IRC change is coming, now that the people running IRC and the people running the forum are the same. It's just not a priority, and keeping things the same for now will help people continue to settle into a familiar-looking forum.

interesting. A site hosted chat I would use (especially if it shared the login). You know how I feel about IRC. I shall watch your career with great interest.

But then it would be harder to talk behind people's backs

Yes, it would. >:(
I'll add that to the positives.

There are downsides to having Chat built into the forums.
1. Guests will probably be able to read it. People post personal information on the current IRC.
2. People, especially noobs, will likely think that the chat is a live FE Q&A session and treat it as such.
3. We do talk about people behind their backs a lot there and it would make it harder to do that if anyone can see it.
These are a few that I could think of off the top of my head.

Why not have a built in chat and one separate from the forum but still affiliated with FES

Saddam, just use mibbit.

Saddam, just use mibbit.
My problems with IRC actually began when I somehow became unable to connect using mibbit. However, after trying it again, it looks like it's working once more. I seem to have come full circle.

Below is a pretty nice looking chat for SMF.

Anyone else think its worth a trial?

So get on IRC.

Below is an alternative IRC plugin.

I like this less, but its better than something completely seperate.
-
Might be a nice try as long as they're made less ugly.
-
Thork, this is a valid consideration for the future, but I don't want to do it yet. For some context, I am contemplating moving the IRC channel off RelicNET and onto our own IRC network (which would consist of only my VPS to start with). This would have numerous advantages, including the fact that we'd be able to do something when services go down, and the ability to create as many channels as we like to discuss different topics. Oh, and we'd be able to boot troublemakers off the network instead of just banning them from the channel.
I'd rather wait until we have a final decision on which IRC network to use before we go ahead with anything like this, as the more things we have referring to the IRC channel, the more there is to change if we decide to switch.
-
I really don't like having a separate window that you have to open though. Can the IRC be integrated to live on the forum page?
We have a really active society with people on-line all the time. Its a massive strength. If you arrive and see chat messages appearing before your eyes I hope it would make you want to join in.

I can't use IRC. I can use a chat window.
-
IRC is a chat window.
-
IRC is a chat window.
But it's a separate chat window!
-
I don't like it being separate. Its a pain in the hole to get to and whenever I get there, no one says anything.
If I could just see it and chat whenever I saw active chat, I'd use it.
Besides Parsifal said there could be more than one channel. If you must all bitch about people behind their backs, you can do it in a secret channel that I will never visit.
-

You mean the one everyone will end up using anyway. Nobody wants spectators in IRC.
-
ok ...
Its not something I use anyway. It was just a suggestion.
-
Besides, the type of conversations that usually goes on is probably not something that should be visible here.
I don't like it being separate. Its a pain in the hole to get to and whenever I get there, no one says anything.
You could just fucking leave it on and set it up to notify you of chat activity or something. Most IRC client has an option like this. And you don't need to close a chat program just because there's currently no activity or if you aren't currently using it. Just leave it on and people will eventually start chatting.
-
Guys, its your thing. Maybe the plugin for IRC mibbit might help. I'll leave it to you.
-
It's really not that tough once you have it set up. To get on IRC I literally click two buttons, then I type "/join #theflatearthsociety" and I'm chatting.
I could probably even cut out that last step if I knew how to in Trillian and I could be right in FES IRC in two clicks.
EDIT: Took like 30 seconds to figure out. I now take two clicks to get into FES' IRC channel.
-
If you use firefox, the easiest would be ChatZilla. Bookmark irc://irc.relic.net/theflatearthsociety. Click, you're in.
-
Fellas, fellas.. Don't confuse the noob.
-
irc.relic.net: Could not connect

It's broke.

Daniel please fix

Hi Thork. Where is Abu?

Try reconnecting now, seems to be fine. Failing that, connect to critical.relic.net instead of irc.relic.net.

Works for me. Try connecting to irc.tfes.org, or failing that, tauri.relic.net. If that still doesn't work, let me know and I'll figure something out.

It says "connection refused" for both servers, and from both my PC and my phone.

Why aren't more people on irc? You all can't be as incompetent as Th*rk, can you?

Everyone should be on IRC. It's wonderful. As someone who was originally skeptical, I am now a convert.

No one is ever active when I log on except for that one time with you, Snupes.
-

We get active fairly often, but it's usually in bursts. It works quite well if you just have an IRC client running in the background and doing other shit.

Aw :(
Well, try it every now and then. You're bound to catch us talking at some point!
-

Hmm, well feel free to try again! I'm generally active for many hours a day as I do leave it running the majority of the time, so if you join (particularly if you tag me) I'll almost undoubtedly respond.

There are people active most of the time. I've noticed that you leave in just a few minutes without saying anything, so people don't even get to notice that you're there. Remember, saying people's names is a good way to alert people to your presence.
-
Blanko: Blanko
-
Also, an IRC client is usually not much of a resource hog, so you can just leave it on. No reason to quit just because no one is currently talking. Leave it on and check it every now and then.
-
I check beardo every now and then, in a clinical way.
-
I feel so defiled every time

what use when no mibbit tho?

None of them, as our network is not included in the list.

Do I add a network, then? If so, what's it called?
Please bear with me here. I wish I were better at this stuff, but I'm not.

You don't need to like anime. The movie is a classic.
Yeah there's one or two nude scenes.

blanko accidentally compliments me, then bans me:
<Irushwithscvs> So even if a NPC is obviously a pirate and screaming "DIE!!" at me, I have to wait until they shoot first, which is dumb if it is an elite NPC
<Irushwithscvs> and elite NPCs have beam lasers that slice through you like butter
<Snupes> I now own a Wii Zapper and Link's Crossbow Training
<Blanko> why
<Snupes> Why wouldn't I
<Snupes> You realize I'm Snupes right
<Blanko> ok
<Blanko> I guess it's more surprising that you even managed to find one
<Snupes> If an official Zelda thing exists, I will own it
<Snupes> Some lady was giving them away in a garage sale here for $15
<Blanko> Nice, when are you going to get your CD-I
<Snupes> Whenever I can afford that
<Blanko> >giving them away for $15
<Crudblud> Snupes spends hundreds of dollars on Zelda soundtracks, $15 is practically a freebie
<Snupes> Are you surprised they're $15
<Snupes> And I wish I spent hundreds on Zelda soundtracks
<Irushwithscvs> you don't "give something away" for money
<Snupes> To date, I have spent $18
<Snupes> Why not
<Snupes> Did she not give them away to me
<Irushwithscvs> The honda dealership was giving away civics for only $15,000
<Snupes> Yes
<Irushwithscvs> no
<Irushwithscvs> you paid for it
<Snupes> Yes
<Irushwithscvs> that isn't giving it to you
<Snupes> Yes it is
<Irushwithscvs> no it isn't
<Snupes> After cash has been exchanged, she gave it to me
<Irushwithscvs> that's not giving
<Snupes> Yes it is
<Blanko> This is great
<Irushwithscvs> "giving it away" does not mean that
<Blanko> Rushy should be here more often
<Snupes> Colloquially maybe not, but as a sentence it absolutely makes sense
<Irushwithscvs> its dumb and you're duumb
<Irushwithscvs> duuuumb
<Crudblud> This is worse than Saddam
<Snupes> Unfortunately, you are Rushy and thus this is as far as I'm going to take the conversation
<Irushwithscvs> what why
<Snupes> Because you are Rushy
<Blanko> Come on
<Blanko> Rushy is hilarious
<Irushwithscvs> what does that have to do with anything
<Blanko> Saddam is just Saddam
<Snupes> You're RUshy
<Irushwithscvs> I thought I was Rushy
<Irushwithscvs> Now I'm RUshy
<Snupes> If you weren't Rushy, it wouldn't be so, but as you are RUshy then Rushy
<Irushwithscvs> which is it
<Snupes> Yes
<Irushwithscvs> is that like a level up
<Snupes> No
<Snupes> It means you are RUshy
<Irushwithscvs> everytime I gain a level a letter goes capital
<Snupes> Get the fuck on board
<Crudblud> Rushit
<Irushwithscvs> is RUSHY super saiyan mode?
<Snupes> No
<Irushwithscvs> yes
<Snupes> Are you retarded
...
<Blanko> If you paste that shit directly, you're banned
<Saddam> He's lying
<Saddam> Blanko has no authority to ban anyone
<Saddam> The power, sure, but not the authority
<Saddam> Don't let him bluff you!
* Blankodroid sets ban on Irushwithscvs!*@*
* You have been kicked from #theflatearthsociety by Blankodroid (Blankodroid)

Your ban wasn't lifted. You connected from a different IP address we hadn't banned.
-
Well, I'm certainly not equipped to try and explain how that could have happened, if it even is what really happened. We both know that I wasn't trying to circumvent any ban, and I strongly suspect that you do know what happened and are just blaming me to keep your weird gaslighting campaign going. Suit yourself.

Saddam, there's no conspiracy here. I'm not out to get you, but you can't expect me not to think you're evading your ban after you were doing exactly that two days ago. Blaming me for all your problems really isn't going to solve anything.
Here's the deal: If you don't try to evade your ban again, I will lift it after the one week Blanko extended it to rather than two weeks.

Is IRC still a thing?
This thing that can't be SEO'd, isn't advertised or linked to on the site, counts towards nothing, soggy biscuit dwelling, nervous no girls club?
why don't you at least try to make it a bit more accessible? As in have a live chat running if you are logged in and you can post once you have say 50 posts? See if some new blood and other people chatting helps. Give the impression people are around. Lure them in with your witty conversation. If it doesn't work, remove it again. But right now it doesn't serve the society. It is just Parsifal's little club. If you are going to do that, separate it completely from the society.
-
Because you're the only one who's too incompetent to know how to use it. And no, it's not a no girls club. Roosroos and Snupes are on there every day.
-
It is accessible by anyone. Contrary to your experiences, it's actually incredibly simple to use. Having said that, it's just a social gathering, there isn't any FET discussion, which is fine. It's all video games, alcohol, music, and capeshit. Maybe throw in some random topics, along with conspiring against Saddam and bullying in general.
-
And Parsidroid yelling out that he's on a train or a bus.
The only times FET is brought up is when a noob joins and starts demanding proof.
-
And no, it's not a no girls club. Roosroos and Snupes are on there every day.
I go there semi-regularly as well

Snupes isn't a girl. It doesn't identify as a conventional gender and it won't let you put it in a box and label it. And Rooroos is just a lesbian waiting to discover the taste of rug. By the age of 35 she'll have a shaved head, wear large cardigans and own 4 cats.

I'm going to ignore the transphobia, because I know I'm not getting anywhere with you there, but surely you're not idiotic enough to think that lesbians aren't women?

Everyone screams about how we need more active ops whenever this happens, which is followed by months and months of nobody caring. No matter how many ops we have, there is going to be the occasional time when nobody is looking at IRC.

Yes, most everyone agrees that a basic form of flood protection would be preferable.

Regardless of whether or not that's a good idea, you're the only person I've heard suggest it, so extending that to "most everyone" is somewhat optimistic.
In any case, it would not have helped in this particular case.

The problem is that lolwut wasn't flooding. His messages were spaced apart by about a minute or so and spread across several nicks. His messages only appear to be flooding on the logs because he was gifted with an entire 2.5 hour period in which no mods were available.
While I do agree flood protection would be useful, flood protection wouldn't solve the lolwut phenomenon.

Your selective memory is kicking in again, I see. Hopefully the endorsements above make your "point" sufficiently irrelevant for it not to be worth pursuing.

Fair enough, although I don't strictly agree it would be completely inapplicable. One could come up with a sensible anti-monologue rule.

The messages were spread across multiple nicks and hosts. An anti-monologue rule wouldn't have stopped him, either. The only thing stopping Lolwut from doing even more damage than he's already done is Parsifal's massive banlist.

This chat room is absolutely absurd. I don't even know if it is truly represented by the flat earth society, but if it is, it is truly an embarrassment. Even the OPs there mumble on like idiots and talking about gaming. I would not recommend going to this room if you are seeking an intelligent dialogue about anything.

What app/what phone/what's the specific problem or error code?

I'm using andchat on my galaxy s7. Which I've not had a problem with in the past. I just get a "connection timed out" message before connecting.
Anastas told me he's also having issues connecting. "Yeah it still gets stuck on 'opening SSL connection' ". Iirc he's using atomic irc or something.

Yeah I have no idea what the solution is I just figured that was the information the real nerds would probably want. I've never found a mobile IRC client that isn't ass, so I just use my computer and a web browser.

Same problem with my mobile. It will timeout if I try to connect from a mobile (cellphone tower) connection. Works fine if I connect to wifi first, so it's something to do with how mobile internet works now.
-
Apparently the server didn't get its IPv6 address configured after the most recent maintenance (for some reason?). This meant that if you had an IPv6 address on your phone (or on any device), the connection would time out. I'm still not sure what happened, but I've manually configured the address for now and confirmed it works with Rushy. Sorry about that.
-
Or maybe it was a specific range of IP addresses because I have an IPv6 address and never had any problems connecting.
-
Or maybe it was a specific range of IP addresses because I have an IPv6 address and never had any problems connecting.
No, the server literally did not have an IPv6 address. It could not be accessed at all over IPv6.
It's possible that either your IRC client explicitly uses IPv4, or it has a very short connection timeout and falls back to IPv4 after that elapses.
-
Thank you, Parsifal

If you don't understand why Pete would think it's a terrible idea, you shouldn't be touching that setting.
-
Well, that cleared everything up. Thanks for explaining. ::)
Setting your client to accept invalid certificates defeats the entire purpose of SSL. It's like setting the lock on your front door to accept any key that someone bothers to put into it.
-
In this case, I'd say it's more like opening your front door when you already know perfectly well who's on the other side.

#theflatearthsociety: Cannot join channel (+b) -- You are banned (banned_from_channel)
Well I was going to tell you that the upper fora is being spammed and has been for an hour or so now. ::)
I have no idea why I'm banned from this. I only used it once in the last year.

I spent today making some fairly significant changes to the way our IRC channel is hosted. I've just updated DNS so that there's a 50/50 traffic split between the old and the new.
This means that if you have connection problems, trying again should put you on the old server, so nobody should be unable to use IRC. But if you do notice problems, please let me know, as I will otherwise complete this migration tomorrow.

IRC is mostly just used for shitposting. If any serious discussion ever happened there it would absolutely be in Status Notices. As it is, I'd rather just not draw attention to it from random noobs.

I feel personally attacked.

I've just removed the old server from the DNS rotation. If you connect now, you'll get onto the new one. I don't expect problems (we've had a few people connect through the new one already), but let me know if they arise.

For some more explanation about what is going on:
I plan to retire the current server over the next couple of years. I set it up in 2011 when I was a junior sysadmin and there are a lot of things which are not great about the way it's configured (although it works). For several reasons, IRC made the most sense to move off first.
Rather than being hosted on a single IRC server, we now have a properly distributed IRC network, composed of four servers located in London, Frankfurt, Chicago and Atlanta. We are using geolocation-based DNS to route users in Europe to London and Frankfurt, and users in North America to Chicago and Atlanta. Users in other continents may be routed to any of the four servers.
Primarily, this provides improved availability because we have redundant servers. If one server goes down, clients will reconnect to the other one in their vicinity. I plan to use this reliability improvement to use IRC as part of a monitoring system where alerts about problems with any part of FES are announced in an IRC channel.
As another advantage, I have just rolled out an automated patching script to all the IRC servers, so that the European servers will automatically patch and reboot during European nighttime, and the American servers during American nighttime. Because we have two servers in each continent, this will not cause an outage; anyone connected to the server being patched will simply reconnect to the other one.
In the spirit of openness upon which FES is built, all of this configuration is publicly available on GitHub:
https://github.com/TheFlatEarthSociety/ansible (server configuration)
https://github.com/TheFlatEarthSociety/cloudformation (geolocating DNS)
We also now have our own OpenBSD package repository, because I had to patch sic to support TLS to be able to use it for monitoring the health of the IRC network:
https://assets.tfes.org/openbsd/6.4/packages/amd64/
You can use this repo on your own OpenBSD systems with the public key from GitHub:
https://github.com/TheFlatEarthSociety/ansible/blob/master/roles/base/files/tfes-64-pkg.pub
Alternatively, our patch for the OpenBSD sic port is available here, and you can build it yourself:
https://assets.tfes.org/openbsd/6.4/packages/sic-1.2p1tfes0.patch

This seems like an incredible amount of effort so that 6 guys can all sit in an online chatroom telling Saddam how dumb he is.

Thork hoping he is right.

I really don't care whether you want to stop or not. I can keep banning you if that's what you prefer, I don't mind.

You just admitted that you banned me for multiple days for a single shitpost, something that literally every member does many times on a daily basis without consequence. But you're the reasonable one here, of course. I'm sure this exchange will convince the 0% of regulars here who don't already know about your self-sustaining grudge against me of your righteousness.

Another example of admin abuse ruining this fine society.

tbh i will never understand why y'all constantly bend over backward to make saddam feel as unwelcome as possible. he doesn't do anything that the rest of us don't do...all the time.
how is what saddam got banned for any different than rushy and i spamming about satisfactory alpha keys literally every day?
or

Gary is correct.

The "it was just a single shitpost" narrative is one I disagree with. The reason Saddam attracts the ire of many regulars is the endless monologues about stuff no one else wants to talk about. He'll butt in in the middle of a conversation and insist that we must now discuss the most recent Marvel movie, and how many black people there were in it.
In that way, he's really no different from your standard "HOLY FUK ERTH IS ROUND AHAHAH" noobs. We're not going to change everyone to suit his conversational, uh, style.
-
Nearly every IRC user at some point monologues about things no one else is particularly interested in. Take Parsifal's constant lectures on the intricacies of obscure operating systems, for example, or my ongoing obsession with virtual spacecraft. If we banned people for spamming memes or going on monologues we'd end up with a deserted channel.
I'm all for the "Saddam is dumb lmao" meme most of the time but banning Saddam for days for doing what every other user does is pointless.
-
Oh, I agree, and I frequently accuse Parsifal of "doing a Saddam" for that exact reason. Nonetheless, I would argue that Saddam is the worst offender here, in terms of frequency. He rarely does anything else.
-
y'all
many regulars
I've mentioned this in the past, but to reiterate, I have no issues with the community at large. My problem begins and ends with Parsifal. There are members who are easily led into joining in when he starts in on me, and there are members who aren't particularly sympathetic to my position, but the only person who truly puts in the effort to ensure that the griefing never ends is Parsifal. If literally any other person were in charge of IRC - Pete, Rushy, Blanko, anyone - there would be no problems whatsoever. Nobody else cares about me that much.
The rest of what Pete is saying is, well, pretty obviously false. I mean, that my discussions (discussions, not monologues ::)) are annoying to him, I don't doubt, but that doesn't make them more frequent than they really are, and it doesn't make them low-quality. Should my discussions not meet your particular criteria for a riveting read, that's really neither here nor there. You are a moderator, not a curator.
-

Have you considered that this irrational outlook might be exacerbating the problem? Whenever I actually try to talk to you, you just ignore me, which is why I no longer bother.
-
My problem begins and ends with Parsifal.
It doesn't. Most of the time, it's me who bans you. Indeed, the last two times you've lost your shit at Parsifal, it was because I banned you from IRC. Let us not forget the Great Fucking Off.
discussions
It takes two people to have a discussion.

Indeed, that is neither here nor there. As I said, the problem is your complete disregard for the discussions already taking place when you demand that the channel be hijacked to discuss the latest capeshit movie. If people ignore you and try to carry on with their discussion, you just keep spamming your shit until you get banned. Try not doing that and see if your situation improves.
You are a moderator, not a curator.
You're mistaking the IRC channel (which is a small space for regulars to enjoy) for the forum (which is free and open).

If this problem is to be solved both sides are going to have to make a commitment to trying something different. irc isn’t so special that this shouldn’t be solved.

Is there a problem, though? Despite what he claims, Saddam doesn't get banned for shitposting, he gets banned for either being disruptive to an ongoing conversation or (in the most recent case) hit-and-run shitposting, where he doesn't even care to engage any responses from the people he's bothering.
Anyone else doing this would also get banned. Saddam doesn't get banned when he shitposts in the same way everyone else does. The only thing setting Saddam apart from everyone else is that, when his behaviour is called out, he doubles down rather than easing off.
I'm happy to work on solving a problem if there is one, but I don't see that there is.
-
I dunno, I see a bunch of people who are calling this perception in to question. If you are claiming that you treat everyone the same then you probably are not being 100% honest because humans suck at being fair.
-

I'm not really interested in having a philosophical discussion on the biases of the human psyche. All I'm saying is that I don't think Saddam has been unfairly banned recently. (There was a time a few years ago when a few of us were somewhat trigger-happy where Saddam was concerned, I admit, but that's long past.)
The fact that we're even having this conversation supports my point. When most people get banned, they stop doing the thing they were banned for and we all move on. When Saddam gets banned, he plays the victim and somehow gets enough people on his side to create a whole drama over it.
-
I’m not proposing a philosophical discussion, I am asking if you have done a gut-check based on the feedback from others? Saddam
is saying there is an unclear standard of behavior based on what others do not get banned for. Perhaps what is needed is a clear conversation where the prohibited behaviors are explicitly spelled out so he understands what standard he is allowed?
-

His response to being told he isn't allowed to do something is always "lol" or something along those lines. His response when he then gets banned for it is to cry victim. We've been over this dozens of times by now because every time someone new comes along they start proposing exactly the same "solutions" to what looks to them like a straightforward problem.
The only problem here is that Saddam refuses to adjust his behaviour until it boils to a head like this and he deletes his account. He can easily rectify that if he wants to.
-
Saddam

Saddam doesn't even know who's banning him. It's almost always me (and no, Parsifal doesn't in any way encourage me to do it), but whenever it happens, his go-to response is something along the lines of calling Parsifal autistic. I have to call his judgement into question based on that.
People like to think their own farts don't stink. I'm have no doubt I'm guilty of this too, but if we're going to have this discussion, we need some concrete examples. I've tried as hard as I can to try and find fault in my IRC bans, but I'm not seeing it. That doesn't mean I'm not wrong, but we've had nothing but assertions and allegations here so far.
-
Ok fair enough. I just wanted to encourage some good will towards a solution, but I understand where you guys are coming from.

That was years ago, and all the result of a situation instigated by Parsifal. You may not sympathize with me, but you don't care about me enough to actively keep some weird vendetta going.
It takes two people to have a discussion.
And there always are at least two people involved. If you're reading other people's posts as belonging to me, I can see how you'd find me disruptive.
Indeed, that is neither here nor there. As I said, the problem is your complete disregard for the discussions already taking place when you demand that the channel be hijacked to discuss the latest capeshit movie. The way IRC works is that you have to "interrupt" other discussions when you talk. It's one channel. It's not like anybody uses private messages or opens up other channels whenever they begin a new subject. I don't interrupt people more than anyone else does. Even the fact that you're talking about capeshit movies shows how out-of-date all this is. I haven't taken to IRC to talk about capeshit in months.

Hit-and-run shitposting? Now flapping is enough to get me banned? What a joke.
-
ITT: Cyber-bullying and rationalizations.
-
Saddam doesn't even know who's banning him. It's almost always me
This actually isn't my impression, but it's been so long since he was last banned (except for two very recent ones) that I just don't know who bans him most often. This is why I'm baffled by the response here -- this is a very infrequent occurrence, and at least as far as I'm concerned, Saddam has improved a lot in the past few years. If he would just take the occasional ban as a nudge in the right direction rather than restarting this victim narrative, everything would be fine.
-

It's very easy to tell the difference, you know.

To be fair, I think webchat sometimes masquerades timeouts as quits (another reason I want to get rid of our current awful mess of a webchat). If that is the case here, then I'm sorry, Saddam. It genuinely looked like you just joined to post a shitty meme and then quit before anyone could respond (which you used to do quite often, in my defence).
-
To be fair, I think webchat sometimes masquerades timeouts as quits
But you provided timestamps. 13 seconds is not a timeout.
-

If Saddam's phone happened to switch networks at the moment he sent that message, an ICMP host unreachable message may have been returned to the web server when it next attempted contact, which could result in the connection being closed immediately. Given how awful webchat is at reporting what the real disconnection reason was, I'm willing to give Saddam the benefit of the doubt here.
-
Fair enough. I'll remain sceptical but I do agree it's at least possible.
-
The network at work repeatedly picks up and drops off, sometimes for only seconds at a time. I shouldn't have even bothered trying to join IRC there, but I didn't think that even seemingly-intentional hit-and-run shitposting would be seen as so disruptive. In any case, I didn't even mind the ban so much as I did the fact that the ban was just going on and on with no sign of ending. It wasn't my intention to restart old drama when I first posted about this; it was just to get the ban lifted.

How dare you bring your new fangled technology into this? IRC is a huge improvement on Morse and you should be grateful for its implementation. >o<

Parsifal is too elitist for that. Besides, my server already has a Parsifal. Fuck off with that replacement bullshit.

The only benefit to Discord over IRC is voice chat and I'm sure having obnoxious tweens voice chat raid us would be amazing; keeping IRC is the best option.

This is because the Let's Encrypt root CA expired yesterday. Some older clients don't yet trust the new root, but up-to-date ones should.

You can try updating your TLS library version, although I'm not sure exactly how to do this on Windows. Maybe installing the latest version of your IRC client will do the trick?
I am going to look into a workaround, but this is fundamentally a problem with your client, not the server.
-
I've tried a manual workaround for now, but the automation will undo it in about 10 hours if I don't make it permanent. Can you try again and let me know if it helped?

I have confirmation that this helps, at least for some clients. I'll make it permanent later.

This is a Kiwi IRC problem, nothing to do with us. Hopefully they will fix it soon. You can work around it for the time being by connecting with Mibbit (https://mibbit.com/) if you like.

IRC is not a unified platform; it is a protocol. What you're doing is connecting to a server (QuakeNet) which would only give you access to QuakeNet's IRC channels. The FES IRC server is entirely separate from QuakeNet.
To use the FES IRC you only need to go to https://irc.tfes.org/
You can also connect with your own client with:
Server: irc.tfes.org
Port: 7000 (requires SSL)
Chat room: #theflatearthsociety
This is all found in the OP of this thread which I highly suggest you read.

Don't even bother with all those other crap message services developed over the last two decades.
Text-based instant messaging systems achieved perfection in the late 1980s with the deployment of IRC chat. Once ICQ came out, it all turned to poo-poo.
