Title: Diplomacy
Post by: Oscar on February 14, 2016, 05:49:01 AM
Is anyone interested in playing a game of Diplomacy? It's kind of a simpler version of Risk, only everyone's moves are arranged secretly and revealed/settled simultaneously. Negotiation is as important as actual military maneuvers and therefore necessary to win.

Each player assumes control of one of seven of the Great Powers of Europe at the dawn of the 20th century. Wars will be declared, territories conquered, and alliances forged - and broken! Betrayal is practically inevitable in this game, so the question isn't whether or not your allies will stab you in the back, but when.

The seven Great Powers consist of Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire. If we can't scrape together that many players, we can still play with less. Countries are supposed to be distributed at random, but I'm willing to allow you to claim your preference at this point. We can get stricter about the rules later on if this takes off. I'll be serving in the role of gamemaster - a neutral adjudicator who you'll be privately sending your orders to every turn. Orders will be resolved as soon as I receive them from every player, or else at the end of one week. If I don't receive any orders from you by then, all of your units will be held in place for the resolution phase. Negotiation can take place in the thread or (of course) through private channels.

The full rules may be found here (http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy_rulebook.pdf).

How quickly the game moves is up to the players. The quicker everyone submits their orders, the quicker they can be resolved. If everyone happens to be online at once, we could potentially blow through several full turns in a couple of hours. Of course, that probably won't be the case most of the time. I'll be moving on to the next phase automatically after one week. That should be plenty of time for anyone who is still active.

Oh.  Perfect.  I'm game.

It ain't great if other players are ignoring your overtures, and it's even worse to let everyone else know that they are.

There are still three days left to submit orders.

Just making sure my messages are getting through...  ::)

As near as I can figure the rules break down into:

2 turns per "year" spring and fall.
You give orders for spring and fall.(move, attack, build, support)
Whatever territories you own after fall stuff resolves, you own and can build more units.

Before you write out your moves/actions, talk to other people.  Don't go alone cause then you're gonna die.

A momentous hour has struck for Germany. Envious rivals everywhere force us to legitimate defense. The sword has been forced into our hands. I hope that in the event that my efforts to the very last moment do not succeed in bringing our opponents to reason and in preserving peace, we may use the sword, with the help of God, so that we may sheathe it again with honor. War will demand enormous sacrifices by the German people, but we shall show the enemy what it means to attack Germany.

And so I commend you to God. Go forth into the churches, kneel down before God, and implore his help for our brave army.

The people are Germany are a people of peace, and we welcome good relations with our Italian neighbors.  One of my statesmen will send along a proposal shortly.

Let it never be said that the great citizens of the German Empire thirst for war.  To that end, Germany would like to officially extend an offer of mutual nonaggression to any nation interested in preserving the peace and prosperity of Europe and her allies.  Feel free to contact the Kaiser at your convenience to discuss any interest or terms you may have.

also the kaiser will try to be on irc more often for diplomacy related stuff.

I would be more then pleased to host the Kaiser and join in this nonaggression pact.  Such an agreement can only strengthen our two nations.

excellent!  consider it done.  we welcome peace with our italian neighbors.  the people of germany expect their kaiser to ensure their access to all the finest cured meats and sausages, and i won't let them down.

I'm also interested in knowing who Germany believes its enemies to be.

certainly not our friends in family in saint petersburg.  germany would love to formalize its friendship with the russian empire in a nonaggression pact.  we're family, dear cousin, and family shouldn't fight.

There's at least one player who isn't checking the box to "resolve orders once all powers have issued orders". It's probably them.
Fuck them.

Also, WAR!

So, Austria has betrayed me immediately after agreeing to a non-agression pact.

I have lost a supply depot.  With only two depots and two units, I am outmatched more than 2 to 1.

Therefore, I am surrendering and disbanding all my units.

Austria will have unchallenged access to all south western Europe.
Yes this is a rage quit but hey, I see no victory for me so why bother going on?  I thought about fighting until the end so everyone else could fight him while he was distracted but you wouldn't.  I suspect you'd all have me removed quickly so I say "Enjoy Parsifal Rule".

Yeah well, I just hate being fucked over in the second turn, making the game impossible for me to win.
If we could make units at any supply depot then it would be different.

Can't.  I ran the sandboxes.  Nothing I do will take a territory.  Italy will be gone by winter of 1903. (3 turns)

ok, first of all, the french asked us to come to paris, ok?  and second of all what we do or don't do in france is none of your beeswax.  so i dunno why any of you would insinuate, or were maybe going to insinuate, that we're taking over france, because we're not, so stop yapping about it.

i mean i feel like one of you was going to start yapping about it, so let's just nip that right in the bud.  no one is taking over france.  we're just, you know, we're kicking it over here for a bit, no big deal.

i don't have to justify myself to you people.

So, being landlocked and literally every player in a better position (including France who is an NPC) I thought I'd try to get Germany and Austria to fight by making up some fake communications to hint that we're in an alliance to secretly take down Germany but it has occurred to me that, well... no one would believe it.   Diplomacy, as I've learned, is a game that requires more talking than actual unit movement.  No one but Austria wants to talk to me and even that is mostly dismissals of any proposal or pleads.  And with good reason, obviously.  So, I've decided, out of sheer boredom, to post the entirety of our communications.  It is honest, true, and complete.  Parsifal can confirm.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/Lord_dave/DiplomacyAustria-ItalyComm_zpsg6mokxce.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Lord_dave/media/DiplomacyAustria-ItalyComm_zpsg6mokxce.jpg.html)

Sadly, I can't surrender or disband units.  Apparently the game's creators felt that players would leave if they're losing and no one would want to replace them.  Why this is a bad thing, I'm not sure.  Truth is, I'm out of options.  I tried taking Mun which would have given me 1 extra unit for a few turns that would have helped but that was blocked.  Now, I'm unable to take any land unless someone decides to not defend, which silly since everyone has enough units to defend all their territories.

So, here are my current plans:

I will be moving my unit out of Rom to Tus.  Austria will be moving from ION to Nap and take that.  He'll hold Venice to ensure I don't backstab, which is understandable.  I'll move my unit from Tyr to Boh.
In Fall, I'll move from Tus to Pie and from Boh to Gal.  Once there, Austria will move from Ven to Rom, Tri to Ven, and probably Bud to Tri.
Then Italy will finally be removed from the game.

To surrender, click the drop-down victory conditions for the turn and select "surrender" before submitting the order.
I did.  It requires everyone else to choose victoryXplayers winning  or surrender and with two AIas, that won't happen.

Also, I know I was screwed from round 2.  I'm still looking forward to the next game.

Even if I was, you made no attempt to get Napal.  An easy state to get.  And why block Boh?

So now, you can't take everything by winter.  So now I'm alive for another year.  Great...

Well, at least now everyone can be suspicious as to why you're not taking italy.

Look, you asked why I was moving up, what my strategy is well, I have none.  I'm moving pointlessly.  I can only do something if I get help but no one is stupid enough to help so I'm waiting for you to finish me off.  A task you could have done by now if you wanted.
