Why the misinformation?
« on: February 11, 2018, 10:00:00 PM »
The shape of the earth doesn't seem like the kind of thing anyone needs to cover up. I was just wondering why have we been fed the spherical earth for so long? What is the benefit to misleading folks on this?

No one is covering up the shape of the earth directly. It's simply a result of misguided religious dogma combined with cold war propaganda. The short version is that Aristotle decided long ago that the earth must be sphere because the gods would only choose such a perfect shape for humans to live on. Eventually the Catholics picked it up many, many years later and ran with it. Then we reach the cold war, where each country is showing off just how much it can lie to its own people and the US won. The moon landing was faked, and since the popular belief at the time was that the world is spherical, the earth was depicted as a sphere.

.. but since then, hundreds of humans, regular folk like you and me, from Italy, Canada, Japan, Russia, UK and other countries have orbited the Earth, in a craft operated by Americans, Russians, Europeans and others.

India, China, Japan, Russia and the USA have all sent unmanned craft around and onto the Moon, regardless of whether or not the manned landings were fake or not.

And if one of those countries were to say "oh actually the moon landing is fake!" do you honestly think they would be believed? Which is more likely: that they call out a lie for no real benefit, or go along with it to ensure the most militaristic country on Earth doesn't put them on its hitlist?

Whats the benefit to keep this going?

What's the benefit to revealing the truth and causing your populace to lose even more faith in the government?

Just to avoid looking bad? It makes sense but it seems like a lot of work for little gain.

I wouldn't describe widespread riots and chaos as simply a case of "looking bad".

Wouldn't it have been possible to win even MORE points by saying "Hey look! The earth is flat, and here's new technology based on that that's way better than those capitalist pigs/godless commies can do with their stupid round earth technology."

There is a simple explanation for why nobody did that - that round earth is a better model that better fits reality.

This makes zero sense. The Russians have been adversarial to the US since the end of WWII. They have no interest in towing the American line and seem to love poking the US any chance they get. If the Earth was flat, they would proclaim it loudly and laugh at the "stupid" Americans.

The Russians actually did cast a lot of doubt on the American space program during the Cold war, and America did the same to their space program.

Fairly sure you're being very deceptive here. While propaganda was useful for making the masses feel a bit safer, neither side contested obvious feats. When Sputnik was launched, the U.S. government didn't deny it. The same goes for the Soviet Union and the Moon landing. If anything, each side looked at the other and wanted to get ahead.

Tom, would you like some help building that strawman? Casting doubt on each other's capabilities is pretty run of the mill propaganda. At no point in time did the Russians ever say the Earth was flat. They knew it wasn't since they were the first to put an object in orbit. I guess that means the space lie started with them, right?  ::)  Neither side had any incentive to cooperate in some made up lie and both sides were using space very frequently. They both had equivalent knowledge, so if one side was lying about some fundamental aspect, the other side would know and exploit that to their advantage.

You know, I don't think that would happen in the US.  The first person to fake it as president would quickly be exposed by the other party.  If the people found out about all the lies, one party would win all the elections for enough time that the country would be strictly biased against the other party for the lies.

Not as deceptive as those who continue to push the entire "Cold War" narrative as if it was a genuine conflict between two "sworn enemies." It was nothing more than fodder the totalitarians foisted upon the world populace in order to maintain control.

ZERO Chance anyone other than a select few are actually in charge of all the world government(s). Might to ten to twelve people running the entire show.

If you think political parties are actually against each other in the US then you haven't been paying attention. There's a very good reason that the parties want the public to constantly bicker about meaningless gibberish (e.g. abortion) and not about any real issues.

What is the very good reason?
