A Physics 122 class presentation states the ISS is @ 226 km.

The state of university edumacation...

Geez, I wonder what their free-body diagram of the ISS would look like....

Any rocket surgeons here willing to tackle that one?

Beyond the typo in the presentation, would you mind telling us the maximum altitude an object can reach and the max speed an object can travel?

It depends on how much fuel you can stuff in it. Technically there is no upper limit save the speed of light, though the law of diminishing returns will make your rocket have to be exponentially bigger after a few orders of magnitude.

You can’t even imagine how happy I am to have read this today! This is truly amazing - this is the first time I am seeing a flat-earther display open-mindedness and willingness to learn!!! In fact, this is by far the best thing I’ve read on this site so far. Thank you so much! Ladies and gentlemen, please, let’s celebrate this wonderful moment. I am completely serious by the way.

1. I've learned that air slows the rocket a lot. It can only reach 3,000 mph in atmosphere, but 18,000 mph at the edge of space. That increase is due to the lack of air resistance.

2. The atmosphere has essentially no effect on the amount of thrust. Whether in atmosphere, or in a total vacuum, the same level of thrust can be achieved.

Am I getting this correct? Any more information or corrections is greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for input, and allowing me to express my opinions on this matter.

Duly noted and celebrated.

This may me a little costy. But I'm pretty sure you can do this: Try sending a weather balloon up to the highest altitude you can (do it higher than 40,000 feet) and stream video feed from a camera.
They've got this one covered actually.

https://wiki.tfes.org/High_Altitude_Photographs

Almost commendable. It's another "Heads we win, tails you lose" argument from the Flat Earthers

FE: "Look out your window. It looks flat. That's evidence of a flat earth"
RE: "That is just the scale of the earth, you can't perceive the curve at ground level but if you get high enough you can. Look at this photo/video"
FE: "That's from a space agency. FAKE!"
RE: "OK. This one is not fake, this is from some hobbyist who sent up a weather balloon and you can see from the images on the ground there is no lens distortion"
FE: "Curvature results from the fact that at the edge of the atmosphere we are looking down at the illuminated circular area of the sun's light."
RE: "What? You literally just said that the first image was fake! Now you're saying you DO expect to see a curve?"

It's quite hard to argue with people who think like that. Some people sign up here and are genuinely interested in the arguments. Those people probably can be persuaded with logic and reason that FE theory is bunk. To answer your original question though, others are so entrenched that I don't think it matters what you throw at them, they will always find a way to deflect or deny or ignore the things which prove them wrong. If you understand a bit about confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance then you'll see it at work a lot on here.

I would just like to present the fact that flat-earthers ignored this post.

Flat Earth Investigations / Re: Occam's razor

There are no NASA employees who have come out in support of the flat earth movement or commercial pilots.
I guess they don't fancy mysteriously dying in extremely unlikely accidents. Imagine that.

This was a guy who was in the investigation of the Apollo one fire, not how NASA launched its rockets.

That isn’t how the world works unfortunately. There are lots of places to go research rocket technology and it appears you should. You should probably also adopt an agnostic position until you have a really solid ground not to. So far it appears that you don’t accept this claim solely on the basis that it sounds outlandish and that is a terrible basis.

Another one who agrees that the rocket travels 86 football field lengths in one second. Thank's for your input. Agree to disagree.

So you will not talk about this with anyone who disagrees with you?

Flat Earth Investigations / Re: Government Cooperation?
« on: February 12, 2018, 07:46:17 PM »
I received a question that I don’t quite know how to answer, and I was wondering if you guys had any answers.
If different governments don’t get along in general, why would they all cooperate together convincing everyone the earth is round?
Logically, I doubt this is an exception to our disagreements. It makes sense to me that our government would hide it, but why would they all cooperate?  ???

According to at least some FE'rs(not all), all the countries in the world don't really exist, and they just pretend to be different to prevent anyone reaching this conclusion.

Your argument basically seems to be "I don't understand how rockets work, therefore they don't".
That really isn't an argument.
The SpaceX launch is all on video, there are numerous witnesses to the launch and lots of amateur footage.
Someone did some excellent analysis on another thread comparing weather patterns from weather satellites compared with the SpaceX live stream.
While we are here, I've seen a Shuttle launch with my own eyes one time I happened to be on holiday in Florida at the right time.
If you have any evidence that the launch was faked then please present it. You not understanding how rockets work isn't evidence.

Agreed, they launch. They go up, then turn sideways, then go off over the ocean and land in the ocean. I meant it was fake in the sense that it doesn't go 17,500 mph into space.

Your response basically ignored the point I was making, and just attempts to shut down the conversation. Answer the real question here: do you believe the rocket goes 17,500 mph into space?

Why is that so crazy to believe that the rocket can reach speeds of 17,500 mph? Is that for some reason some magical thing that humans can't hope to achieve?

If you believe a rocket can travel the length of 86 football fields each second, I guess there's nothing more to say. We are just not going to agree, so I guess I'll just leave it as agree to disagree.

But just want to be clear, this is something that you believe if you accept the official story. We can only get the SR71 jet plane to a speed of 3,540 km/h (2199.654mph). At that speed, the thermal expansion starts to pull the thing apart. But rockets? Oh they can go 17, 500 mph, no problem of course. I must be stupid to question that right?

Anyway, agree to disagree.

Liqued fuel rockets are much more powerful than jets, because of how they work and what fuel they use.

Flat Earth Community / Re: A challenge to FEr's...

Hello, all FEr's. To be clear, this is not a shot at you or your beliefs. This is a genuine challenge for you to convince me of FE! I challenge any and all COHERENT and FACT BASED flat-earthers to convince me, a round earther, to believe in a flat earth. Like I said, please use fact-based/math-based evidence.

Note: Evidence of one does not disprove the other. This goes both ways. Also, let's not try to disprove Newton.

P.S. I know just enough terminology to know what FE and RE are.

P.P.S. PLEASE, let this not be a flame war. I am trying to avoid one at all costs.

P.P.P.S. I think this is the right discussion board.
I think your heart is in the right place, but this really isn't a topic that is going to gain any traction. You really need to put in some work and come up with a specific topic you want to discuss. Few people here are going to reply to a post that is essentially "prove FE to me." That is what the resources we have made easily available are for. You should review those, and if you find a topic you want more information on, or want to debate, then make a post.

This is going to be moved to the bullshit thread because the admin doesn't understand what a debate is.
Refrain from low-content posting in the upper fora warned.

Thanks!
