I personally believe that space travel exists and we have been to the moon.   I can't really speak for others.

I'm not entirely sure it's real or unaltered, but like I said there's a few videos of this event across the world which look the same...  It's also an event which public officials verified would happen.   TFES has always had an open mind to new ideas.

Your asking me why you can't see a rocket booster 230 thousand miles away?

I'm talking about the video J-Man posted

I've seen a few videos of this event.  If they are real, how do we see the rocket booster at quarter million miles away?  The moon would have to be MUCH closer.

A very good photo...  These are the kinds of photos that keep you going.

Its a party!

I didn't know we can measure parallax with some stars.  The only question I have is that to use parallax to triangulate the distance of certain stars, you would have to make an assumption about how far the earth has travelled in 6 months around the sun.  Is it possible to get similar results using smaller numbers for earth's change in seasonal position...

129
The stars are close, but not close enough to see parallax or changes in there orientation to one another.

I suppose they could have held these tests underwater as well... That's frequently used by NASA to simulate low or no gravity conditions anyway.

Hey Guys,

I know there's been a lot of talk about how far objects in space are.  It occured to me that if the atmosphere is shaped like a Dome, then it will act like a telescope and magnify the appearance of images like the Sun, Planets, and Stars.
Here is a photo of earth taken from a Mars orbiting spacecraft and the ajoining article:

https://earthsky.org/space/hirise-image-earth-moon-nov-20-2016/

You can see how small earth looks like from space.  But when you remember that looking down on earth without the aid of atmospheric lensing will render a smaller image of earth, then these kinds of space photos make sense even from a flat earth perspective.

It's just the map that I've adopted over time...  My favorite reason is that the land up north, around the arctic circle like Alaska, Russia, Scandinavia, and Greenland are all very tall in height and form a basin around the whole world which can "hold" a lot of the water mass of the oceans.  The map layout also has a lot of water space that allows you to move the continents around in order to find an accurate depiction of land distances.

I understand your objection..  But the atmosphere is pretty dense - liquid almost  - and shares many if the refractive properties of glass..

134
Yeah, you pretty much grasped the concepts..   There was a discussion here about distance and flight paths on a modified flat earth map I made which needs more revision..  https://forum.tfes.org/index.php?topic=18429.msg255127#msg255127

Hey FLBoy,

Welcome to Science!  Like you suggested, I was a "Round Earther" until about five years ago when I started looking into Flat Earth.  Ultimately, I had to draw my own conclusions on what the world looks like.

In my view, it looks pretty flat from the surface, but as you go higher in the sky it looks rounder as seen from planes and satellites.  Why the earth doesn't look "flat" from space is a bit complicated, but I included a few pictures below to help explain:

In picture 1 (https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2017/goes-16-sends-first-images-to-earth) you see a satellite photo of earth . In picture 2, I tried to replicate this image by taking a flat earth map and putting a glass dome above it to represent the atmosphere and give it a spherical look.  Picture 3 illustrates what I think the earth looks like from far away at the time of this satellite photo.  I don't know if satellites are high enough to get this view or if the dark side of earth can be seen at all.  I suspect when people see earth from space, they assume darkness is caused by earth's curvature rather than the suns lighting effect.  Either way, everyone's shooting in the dark  :P

To get more fancy, here is another photo from space showing half the earth illuminated by the sun (https://www.met.ie/tracking-hurricane-lorenzo).  I posted my versions next to it.

And keep in mind the flat earth map I used needs to be edited in order to properly reflect all the land mass seen in the satellite images.

Here's a better view of the materials I used.  The map with a dome is on the left and without a dome on your right.

Like you said, it may not be so obvious as to what the shape of the earth is from different perspectives.

Jimster your comments are valid...   But I'd just reinforce that a new science theory may not have all the details worked out or explained properly, but it doesn't make it inconsistent with science.

The first image is correct..

The second idea probably isn't worth looking into for our purposes.

Again, Polaris will follow every ship around the world, and always point directly to the northern edge of a disc.  You can only see Polaris at a certain viewing angle so that's why you can't see another man's north star.

Polaris, your compass, and lines of longitude will be parallel to each other.  You will not travel in a straight line on a disc (or even a globe) and you need to make corrections to travel along a particular line of latitude.

Stack, there's only one image of Polaris that everyone see's at night.  I cannot adequetly explain why the light from Polaris reflects in different directions off a dome and only one image is shown to each viewer.  I'll try more demonstrations perhaps like the images I posted to ClydeFrog.

Good question...   You can only see a certain distance around you before objects fade out of view...
