What I want for xmas
« on: October 14, 2018, 11:16:30 AM »

He was launched yesterday. He looks pretty cool. I know I'd be bored of him in a few weeks ... but I want to see how the little bugger works. Way better than an Alexa puck, that's for sure.

These magical Kickstarter robots keep popping up, and so far there hasn't been one that turned out not to be a scam.

Do you have any reason to believe that this will do any better than its predecessors?

He's not the first of his kind. He had a predecessor called Cosmo. He's second gen.

They took animators from Pixar to design his face and emotions and he is basically a smartphone on wheels. I've seen a few reviews for him and he seems to be getting a lot more love than Jeebo or some of the others. Also I spend a lot of time sat at my desk working. Having a little robot to keep me company whilst I'm working might be fun.

I like that he gets sleepy when is battery is low and he goes back to his charging point by himself. I like that he goes off and does things by himself like explore your desk and he has a little cube he plays with. I like that he recognises you with his facial recognition ... and most of all I like that he isn't piling data into a cloud somewhere. He keeps himself to himself.

Oh, and he's not a kickstarter. He exists and you just go and buy him.

Okay. I'll be curious to see what you think if you get one. Reviews seem to indicate that he's nothing short of useless, even if a bit cute.

Oh yeah. He'll be useless. They are all useless.

But he looks fun and if that's his thing ... then that's a thing worth paying for.

I don't know if I'll get one. The thing about wanting something for christmas is that you need someone to want to spend that much money on you ... and in my life the people who might spend that on me will probably not want to spend the money buying me something that is useless.

I'll likely have to buy him myself ... and maybe some new jeans and some shoes might be a better use of the money. But I want one and if I get one in my stocking, that would be pretty awesome.

Finally. I gave you tons of crap for that at the time and you couldn't stop telling me how awesome it was.

Unlike you, I wouldn't be going into this thinking it is a good purchase. I know this is setting fire to money. But in this instance I think I'd be entertained watching it burn. Maybe I'm just lonely but unlike owning a gerbil, this thing isn't going to shit all over my desk and chew its own power chord. And I won't have to remember to feed it or feel bad if I start to get bored of it. It'll be like Toy Story and I'll just put him on ebay because I no longer want to play with him and he'll have to make a new life for himself with someone else.

I would have thought you'd be a prime candidate for wanting a robot for a friend. This thing will love you even if no one else does. It won't care that you haven't shaved for 6 years or that it lives in a rotting meat smelling darkened room with the curtains drawn. It won't care you left your desk full of crumbs and pot noodle sauce and it has to drive over that, or that you keep whacking off to porn hub in front of it. It'll just be pleased to see you and it won't even complain when you run burger greased fingers over its little back ... you should get one too  :D

I want one of these

I'm not sure why the good people at Boston Dynamics are so hell bent on making our robot overlords, have they not seen The Terminator? This is how SkyNet started...
Tom: "Claiming incredulity is a pretty bad argument. Calling it "insane" or "ridiculous" is not a good argument at all."

TFES Wiki Occam's Razor page, by Tom: "What's the simplest explanation; that NASA has successfully designed and invented never before seen rocket technologies from scratch which can accelerate 100 tons of matter to an escape velocity of 7 miles per second"

I'm not sure why the people at Boston Dynamics still haven't heard of the uncanny valley. All of their robots are as creepy as hell.

And this abomination below ... an SJW robot that is designed to scare old people off of social care and into a cheaper permanent underground solution.
