Title: Parsifal is getting a laptop
Post by: xasop on September 07, 2016, 07:49:36 AM
In a surprise switcheroo with SexWarrior, I will soon be semi-nomadically scouting for a home in the Netherlands, and thus my current (and still very OP after four years) desktop is no longer suitable.

I have already bought a laptop to replace it, though I still need to buy some extra storage and other accessories. I might also be getting a good quality backpack with a dedicated laptop compartment.

What I have ordered is:

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (4th gen)
CPU: Intel Core i7-6600U (3.4 GHz)
Memory: 16 GiB LPDDR3 SDRAM (1866 MHz)
Storage: 128 GB M.2 mSATA SSD
Display: 14.0" 2560x1440 IPS

I have also ordered a OneLink+ dock (for use as a stationary workstation) and a OneLink+ to VGA/RJ45 adapter (for use as a mobile laptop).

I will be replacing the 128 GB SSD (which also has Windows 10 Home preinstalled, since I couldn't select no OS) with a 1 TB NVMe SSD bought elsewhere at some stage.

It is going to dual boot OpenBSD (as my primary OS) and Fedora (mostly for Steam, but also any other software I can't run on OpenBSD).

I will also be getting a couple of external SATA drive docks for things that won't fit on internal storage.

Geeze, a 1TB SSD?
Damn....

I already have a 1 TB SSD I bought a couple of years ago, but it's a 2.5-inch and not an M.2, so I can't use it in that laptop.

They've come down in price a lot since I bought my current one.

I'm sadly so far behind on hardware it's pathetic.

I have now ordered this SSD.

As far as the laptop itself goes, nothing to do but wait for things to arrive and then install some OSes. I still plan to make an order for some more hard drives and USB drive docks with Amazon, to satisfy my storage requirements once I get rid of my current PC.

I have just ordered 3 of these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XS423SC/), and 1 of these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DPPTC8S/). As an aside, that makes 25 TB of storage ordered in one weekend.

Now just to sit back and wait for the succession of deliveries to roll in.

Why do you need so much storage?

Why do you need so much storage?

Backups, mostly. The three 8 TB drives are going to be on a rotation between an online backup drive (currently a 4 TB WD Green) and two offline backups at different locations.

This arrangement will need to change somewhat once I move to the Netherlands, but I'll be keeping at least one of those 8 TB drives as an offline backup in case I lose all other copies.

My new hard drives and hard drive dock have been shipped! They should arrive over the next 2-3 weeks, as they're coming all the way from the US.

Neither my laptop nor its SSD has been shipped yet, though. :(

My laptop has shipped!

Apparently. Lenovo's e-mails are confusing as fuck and I can't tell if I've been properly invoiced or if it's only the laptop or the laptop and the dock that they've shipped. I might have to contact them about it.

According to the tracker thing, my laptop is on this flight:

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/sq221/

Currently over the Timor Sea, and should arrive in Sydney within 6 hours. Then I just have to wait the customary few days for it to sit around doing nothing in customs before I get it.

I have my new laptop!

Now just to await delivery of my new SSD so I can install a real OS.

So my SSD has been delayed by another 3 weeks or so. More time to bide.

In the meantime, I received my three new 8 TB hard drives and my USB SATA dock. Now my laptop's dock and ethernet/VGA adapter have been shipped.

Still another two weeks until my SSD gets shipped, though. :(

My dock has arrived. Just waiting on that SSD now. Not much more than a week until the ETA for being shipped, so probably about two weeks before it arrives.

The SSD I wanted is now unavailable entirely. I must now choose between sacrificing performance or capacity. Should I buy a 1 TB mSATA or 512 GB NVMe SSD instead?

With the amount of back up capacity you have, do you need that much storage?  If not, then performance, no?

It would be nice to have 1 TB of storage in the laptop itself so I can carry more around. Whichever trade-off I make, though, I will be able to upgrade either capacity or performance later.

That said, I chose the 512 GB NVMe SSD for the lower latency, especially since I plan to share my home directory between OpenBSD and Fedora as an ext3 filesystem, which means I can't use soft dependencies on OpenBSD, which means that all metadata operations are synchronous.

According to Australia Post, my new SSD should be arriving tomorrow. Finally!

Well, my SSD does not have usable self-encryption in the way I expected. I have ordered a different one and must now wait another 3-4 weeks.

Or maybe you could just not have illegal shit you're trying to hide.

This is going to be my primary work laptop. Even if we assume that there aren't legitimate reasons to care about random thieves being able to access my personal data if it gets stolen (which there are), I'm not going to be that guy that leaks my employer's IP.

Yeah or maybe stop working for an employer with illegal shit to hide.

I finally have a self-encrypting SSD that works. I have installed Fedora and OpenBSD onto it.

Now just to migrate my data.

I'm in no rush. OpenBSD doesn't yet fully support this hardware in any case, though it's usable. I just wanted to buy it while it was on sale.

Today, I synced all my files over and shut down OpenBSD on my old desktop for the last time. It's now just a Windows 10 gaming PC until I get rid of it.
