Suggestions & Concerns / Home Page
« on: April 08, 2022, 08:10:14 AM »
Hi. Your home page sucks. No offence. I mean, you still have a Happy New Year message up there. It's April.

Sort it out.

I mean, either make it a generic home page or if you're going to have some "topical" stuff up there then you need to update it more regularly.

So there.

Flat Earth Investigations / ISS Photo From The Ground
« on: March 31, 2022, 10:32:11 AM »
This photo has just been released of the ISS, taken from the ground in Germany

https://www.space.com/space-station-spacewalking-astronauts-telescope-photo

The structure of it is very clear and it claims to show one of the astronauts doing a spacewalk. It's admittedly just a dot, but what would you expect from that distance.

It's an interesting avenue of investigation for those of you who think the ISS is fake, there's clearly something up there and with not that expensive equipment you can see the structure of it from the ground. If it's not an orbiting space station then what is it, how did it get up there and what keeps it up there and travelling on the path it does?

Flat Earth Investigations / ISS 2031
« on: February 04, 2022, 10:08:33 AM »
So NASA just announced that the ISS will keep operating till 2030 and then in 2031 it will be sent in to a death spiral and plunge in to the ocean.
They've even said where:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-60246032

I'm not sure where I'm going with this other than this is Flat Earth Investigations and I'd suggest this is an opportunity to investigate the ISS and by extension FET.
This is something they're saying will happen, they're telling you where and when. It's something which could potentially be observed - well, it's certainly be on video at the time, you may regard the choice of location, a point far from land, as suspicious. I'd suggest it's a pretty sensible choice given they don't want it crashing on anyone or anything which would cause damage/death.

Flat Earth Theory / Experiment to Distinguish FE from RE
« on: January 18, 2022, 01:16:47 PM »
What experiments could one do in order to distinguish FE from RE?

I would suggest that objects sinking below the horizon, the distance (and angle dip) to the horizon increasing with altitude are observations which we all agree on.
That could be explained by us living on a globe - objects disappear over the curve, as you ascend you see further over the curve. But these observations could equally be explained by EA on a flat earth.

I think we can all agree that objects fall. That could be explained by mass attracting mass, but it could equally be explained by UA.

Ah, but the weight of things, and therefore the force of gravity, varies by latitude (and in other ways) in a measurable way. That could be explained by a spinning globe, the centrifugal force being greater nearer the equator where you are spinning faster. Other variations can be explained by the mass of the earth not being distributed perfectly uniformly.
But it could also be explained by Celestial Gravitation causing local variations.

RET has explanations for all the above. If FET has hypothesised mechanisms which also explain them then what experiment can we do to help us determine the true shape of the earth?

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Democracy Is Overrated

He does have a point, tbf.

I used to joke that there should be a test before you can vote, I am getting increasingly serious about that as I get older.
And I don’t mean an intelligence test but just some basic indication that you know who you’re voting for and what they stand for would be nice.

Who knew this was a thing? Big fan of Tom Scott. Bumped into him last year in a park in London and told him I was a fan. Anyway, he did a video on this:

Be interested to know if there’s any FE thoughts on this.

Suggestions & Concerns / New Users’ Posting Rights
« on: September 02, 2021, 08:37:20 AM »
I see we’ve had a fly by spammer shitting up the board.
I wouldn’t see this is a major problem here but it’s not the first time I’ve seen it.
On other boards I’ve moderated I’ve done things to mitigate this like having to validate new users (often from the email address you can tell if it’s someone serious). Or you can do things like only let new users post in certain sections until they’ve shown they’re not just joining to spam.

For your consideration.

Suggestions & Concerns / Abusive DMs
« on: August 10, 2021, 09:48:43 PM »
Iceman mentioned something in AR which reminded me of something.
I have raised this with Pete privately, but a certain poster does have a habit of sending people abusive DMs when riled.
It seems to be his way of circumventing the rules about personal abuse.
There's no way of reporting a DM, and while I don't think DMs should be covered by the same rules as posts on the fora, I don't think people should have carte blanche to spam people with abusive DMs either.

I believe Pete discussed this with the other mods but I'm not aware there was any outcome.

Suggestions & Concerns / Warning!
« on: June 18, 2021, 08:19:46 AM »
In yet another terrible decision and injustice, I have apparently received a warning:

Quote
AllAroundTheWorld,

You have received a warning for breaching rule 1 (no personal attacks). Please try to discuss ideas, rather than the individuals who presented them.

Please abide by the forum rules, otherwise further action will be taken.

You may remind yourself of the forum rules here

Regards,
The Flat Earth Society Forum Team.

Now obviously this is another blunder from the mediocre mods, but point of order. How am I supposed to know what post I've been warned for?
Am I being stupid or is there no way of telling? Usually the post gets moved to AR or a comment is made in the relevant thread but I can't see anything, so...

My actual suggestion - when these PMs are sent could a link to the relevant post be added so the person can see what ridiculous decision has been made they're being warned for.

Ta.

Flat Earth Community / On the Notion of Flat Earth Belief Growth
« on: April 11, 2021, 06:56:05 AM »
So Pete and me have crossed swords a few times on the idea that FE belief is growing to the point where it’s a significant percentage of people who believe in FE. Don’t get me wrong, you guys are certainly more known than you were 10 years ago and there’s certainly some evidence which shows it has got some traction in certain areas. Although there’s also evidence that some people simply pretend to believe in a flat earth online for the lolz.

Anyway, so scimandan spent a few hours on Omegle fishing for flat earthers and found not a one. Not the most scientific approach maybe, but make of this what you will. If FE belief was as prevalent as some on here claim then surely by chance you’d find some believers this way.

Flat Earth Investigations / VFX Artists React to the Moon Landing
« on: April 07, 2021, 03:12:29 PM »
I think this is the right place for this.
As per the title. Interesting video of a few guys who work in the VFX industry watching footage from the moon landings and commenting on how authentic it looks.

Few points of interest, they comment on the length of some of the shots which they say would have been incredibly difficult to do in miniature or slow mo. The way the dust moves doesn't make sense in an atmosphere where you'd get turbulence.
The reflections in the visors would have been problematic - you'd expect to see lights or of the camera.
They compare it to the film 2001 which would have been state of the art VFX of the time and note how different it looks and how clear the effects are in it are.

I thought it was interesting because most of the "moon landing is fake" arguments which focus on how the footage is fake come from people with no expertise in the field.

Flat Earth Community / Fly You To The Moon
« on: March 03, 2021, 07:25:47 AM »
Not entirely sure this is the right section for this, but I’m filing it under “recent events which affect the community.”

A billionaire is looking for volunteers for a moon mission:

This would be a good opportunity for someone with an empirical bent to put all this round earth nonsense to bed once and for all. Any takers?

Suggestions & Concerns / Suggestion
« on: January 14, 2021, 09:54:48 AM »
So I tell you what annoys me about this place. Well, one thing...  ;D
When you make a post it returns you to the index of the board you're posting in, not the thread you just posted in.
Now maybe this is just me and I know there's a preview option but after I've posted I generally like to read it back through to check it.
So...personally I'd prefer it if after you've posted it went to the thread you've posted in.
But maybe everyone else checks before they post in which case...fine. It's not the most important thing.
Just my 2 cents.

Flat Earth Theory / Lake Minnewanka
« on: September 19, 2020, 06:53:54 PM »
I hope this is the right place for this.
Thought this was a good video.
Well, the first few minutes are good where he explains the set up. The rest is literally just him moving the camera up and down at the edge of a lake. I can’t believe how much footage he’s included. But anyway...

He did the “math” beforehand and the results look to match what you’d expect on a globe.

Any thoughts?

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Biblical Literalism & Flat Earth
« on: June 17, 2020, 07:46:14 AM »
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but this seemed like the right place.
So some FE beliefs are based on a literal interpretation of certain Bible verses, notably:

Isaiah 40:22
"He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

Rowbotham was clearly motivated in this way, in a later chapter of ENaG he rails against science and how it leads people away from God.
The issue with this verse is that if you look down at a globe you will see a circle. And there are other issues like this verse:

Revelation 7:1
"After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree."

4 corners implies a square, circles famously don't have corners. But then there's this verse which I was reminded of last night:

Psalm 113:3
"From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised."

The ancient FE belief would have been that the earth was flat and that the sun goes up and over it across the sky during the day and under it at night.
So day would be day everywhere, night would be night everywhere. If you knew nothing about the world or science then you might well conclude that.
And the above verse does appear to support that.

As soon as quick long distance travel became possible thought it was quickly realised that day and night do occur at different times at different places.
And neither the globe or modern FE model claims that the sun literally rises or sets.

TL;DR - Biblical literalism gets you in a mess, and the reason for that is that the Bible is not intended to reveal scientific truths to us.
It's intended to tell us about our creator and our purpose, not the mechanics of how the universe hangs together.
