Title: FAO Pete Svarrior . . .

Hello Pete,

I apologise if this is posted in the wrong place and only hope that your admins can forward it onto you if necessary. I was listening to you on Globebusters last night and asked a question that you seemed to think implied something other than asked so, for the avoidance of doubt . . .

I discovered Flat-Earth back in early 2014, outside of all online activity but eventually discovered that Flat Earth Society was real and not simply the punchline to some bad jokes; it seemed to provide me with some answers and so I joined them and their forum. I heard nothing from them for a while and having pillaged their library, wasn't too concerned about the money that I had sent them.  Some short time later, an odious Australian gentleman in the forums suggested that Flat-Earth was a big scam and that I should claim a refund but since money was not the big-issue, I left the matter there.  I did eventually received membership details from Daniel Shenton so no problems there but it seemed like the society was somewhat defunct. Some short time later, another forum appeared - called TFES - and I joined them but they also seemed beset with political problems so I left them to it.

So, to return to my question last night it was simply to enquire whether the Flat Earth Society of early 2014 and the TFES organisation were one and the same thing; if they weren't, did your organisation develop from either of both of them ?

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards.

This is tfes.org, so you are on what you refer to as the "TFES organization" right now. I think Pete explained the history of the two societies pretty thoroughly. This community (tfes.org) split from theflatearthsociety.org some time ago due to administrative issues.

I'm not Pete, but we have always been called The Flat Earth Society. TFES is a commonly used abbreviation of "The Flat Earth Society", and has been since before this site existed. As you have probably noticed by now, it is used for our domain name.

However, I suspect that you are referring to this site because you have an old account (https://forum.tfes.org/index.php?action=profile;u=6111) here.

Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion.

I am also not Pete but want to confirm that what PP and Parsifal have stated is both true and accurate.

Watcha! Don't suppose you have a link to the Globebusters show you mentioned do you?

Much obliged

Ajaycee:
Thanks for clarifying, and sorry if I was presumptuous in my original interpretation of the question. From what you've described, it does sound like we are the TFES you were thinking of. 2014 sounds like the right timeframe for what you've described.

It sounds like others have covered this question before I even saw it, but if there's anything else I/we can do to help, please let us know!

Cheers Pete, I shall look forwards to watching that when I get back from work. Much obliged for your help.

On the OP it is a bit confusing that both FE sites are so similar, there are a few subtle differences in the look of the forums etc but do you think further differentiation would help? Even something as simple as a different colour scheme for the Wiki or a "nickname" added to the logo.

Maybe call this one "Parsifal's Flat Earth" (for example) so when people are discussing the forums you have a more definitive title that we can refer too?

I'm in the process of listening to that video.

I'm going to post my comments:

- We should repeat the invitation to Globebusters to contribute to the Wiki with their own explanations.

- I realize that we really need to better explain WHY things are our official positions in the Wiki and FAQ. As empiricists we are basing our conclusions on the most empirical determination from the natural world rather than just making something up that is completely hypothetical. On UA, for example, we need to show why it is a more empirical explanation than other explanations.

- We should post links to such interviews with us somewhere on the site.

- I like their idea of "highlighting work of the Flat Earth community," although this can also be applied to things beyond Youtube.

- If we can get them involved, perhaps Globebusters would consider joining forces to be the Youtube face?

Good work Pete.

This is on my radar and I've been considering options on how to best facilitate it. I'll start a separate thread on this subject later today.

Just make a 'media' tab in the menu and list them there with details of how media can contact us?

Another comment:

- We should also make it clear somewhere that we are more than willing to change our "official position" in the FAQ/Wiki to another theory. While they are welcome to add their theories to the Wiki, the proponent of that theory would need to convince the community that theirs is the most empirical explanation in order for it to become the official stance, just like we had to convince the community on our original determinations.

- I'm reading the comments on that Youtube video. I don't understand why these people are so hostile. Pete is clearly saying that we welcome their alternative views and to come here to discuss them.
