Hopefully his successor will at least cancel the plan to violate the UK's international treaty obligations and restore respect for the rule of law in Britain before it loses what little credibility it has left as a world power.

I read somewhere that he could still be in place for months while the party comes up with a successor. Is that how it works?

Not really. Although in real life the work is mostly done by the Civil Servants who work under the ministers. Things won’t suddenly grind to a halt.
