Title: Facebook wants your naked photos
Post by: Dr David Thork on May 23, 2018, 01:24:49 PM
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-44223809

I don't even know where to start with this one. Who in their right mind would send Facebook naked photos of themselves? You'd have to have had a serious head injury to consider this. As far as trust goes, Facebook has practically none. Why would you give your most intimate images to a private corporation that has a track record of selling anything you give it, repeated data breaches and morally questionable behaviour?

Surely lawmakers should step in and outlaw this dreadful idea? Facebook should not be able to ask for nudes. What if 13 year olds send naked photos of themselves to Facebook? They are old enough for a Facebook account. Is Facebook going to amass the worlds largest collection of child pron? This is misguided at best, deeply sinister more likely. What if Facebook scan your body, notice you have say lop-sided breasts ... will they then advertise cosmetic surgery to you? Will they advertise creams to people with eczema and vitiligo? Birthmark surgery, tattoo removal, lady razors if you look unkempt, diet pills if you are packing butter?

Facebook is out of control.

Nobody in their right mind would actually do that. And if they did get a child, then Facebook would be sued for millions to billions of dollars. This is probably fake and I would check other sites. It seems so fake I just want to laugh at how stupid it sounds. And it only works if you send Facebook the exact same photo, so they will just block it. No sane person would share photos like that over Facebook anyways.

Fake? Its the bloody BBC! That is as mainstream news as it gets. The BBC got this from a Facebook spokesperson.

Lots of people send naked photos over Facebook already. I don't think there's a difference between doing that and sending one directly to them, considering they keep everything they come into contact with regardless.

It's still pretty weird to ask for them. I wonder how many will actually send them. Probably more than we think.

People share photos like that on Facebook quite a lot. They also do it on Snapchat, which is owned by... guess who.

Then people are stupid in general. Why would you share photos like that over social media? I'm not sure. Why share those photos at all? Also not sure.

Because it's the easiest way to do so.

Why share those photos at all? Also not sure.

Oh you sweet summer child

Surely the solution is to scan an image before upload, and if it has genitals in it (we have the technology for that), refuse the upload. IE don't have it on the database and dont let people (especially children) publish pron on FB or SC. If you can recognise a face, you can recognise a PP or a VJ.

I was thinking that also, why don't you just do that?

Because that is declining personal data. FBs sinister plan is to gather and hold every bit of data on you. Even your nudes it seems. Again, this is why you need lawmakers to rule that it is a child pron database and rule it explicitly illegal.

If you read the article, they're supposedly looking to stop revenge porn. That means they need to know what your genitals look like, specifically, in order to stop similar images. They're not looking at blocking pornography entirely.

But it won't work. They are matching image for image.

You uploaded a .png? Fine, I'll resave it as jpeg. Or add an 80% compression. Or add a light filter. Or add noise. Or just hit prt sc and save that. It isn't going to work in the slightest.

I'm going to have to take some now so I can send them to them :(
Send them to me instead. I absolutely promise they won't end up in CN.

I doubt it includes those under 18, as that would be child pornography.

And how would Facebook know if you are over 18? Facebook thinks I'm 104.

Then it is no longer Facebooks problem, it's the parents for letting their child lie about their age and use Facebook as a cat fisher. Then again, children under 18 cannot give consent legally...

The first two would be trivial to stop, since I presume that they hash the actual raster and not the image file.

And yes, someone who is determined enough could get through any filter. But otherwise, if you tell them strongly to stop, they'll usually stop. Funny that.

No. FB can't hold child pron with or without the child's permission. Nor can it claim to be 'blissfully ignorant' that they were children. If a bar sells beer to a minors, it isn't the minors that are in trouble or their parents ... the bar loses its license.

If a child purposely sends Facebook a picture, it's more like a minor stealing a beer rather than buying it legally.

Which is actually a huge problem in the US.

Well, in fairness, the hashing could be their own format that they take the raw data from an image and reencode it into the hash.
But this just... I mean, facial recognition is probably better.  Just whitelist who can share your face.  Anyone not on the list can't upload the picture.

They don't hold on to the image though. It's stored as a hash.

It's not my face the algorithm would need to recognise  :D

No. FB is CONSENTING to you uploading the image to your account. They arent age verifying you. That's a bar selling (providing a service) to a minor that it shouldn't.

This is the bit I don't believe. This is the type of thing that comes out in 7 years time and Zuckerberg stands before a panel of senators saying "lessons will be learned" ... meanwhile they have had 200 million child pron images stolen from them. FB has a lot of previous with this type of thing.

FB have said nothing about introducing zoom and post production effects to images.

I doubt that option is one on a childs account, so yeah, it is like a child stealing a beer.

It's like a bartender that sells to minors illegally, but Facebook is the undercover cop that the minor requested in anticipation of that particular bartender trying to sell alcohol to them.

You're misunderstanding how a hash works and what the point is.

Hashing it means the end result is safe enough, but it will have been sent in a way where the image is viewable.

Loads and loads of potential for this to go wrong.

Yep. They'll have to store the images in order for the team to work through them. They are going to store these images, no matter what they are telling people.

They hash them and remove them after this process. It's safer than private information on your profile page.

Well now that I have a 4k monitor, I might be able to pick out your needle in its haystack, but I tend to collect those kinds of pictures for asthetic pleasure, not a game of Where's Waldo?
