Flat Earth Media / Re: ODD TV Flat Earth Presentation
« on: May 08, 2018, 09:17:58 AM »
Is there any evidence for the existence of this "standard refraction" that always makes the earth look flat when viewing far away objects?

There wouldn't be a Wiki about it if there were not evidence. There are 28 references in this page to the supporting evidence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_refraction

Take your time, follow them all, establish which of them have been arrived at through empirical work, then come back to us. This may involve trips to libraries.

If you're back in 10 minutes, everyone will KNOW you haven't bothered.

Actually the diameter at the equator is about 27 miles larger than the pole, and yes, it should be observable.

It almost sounds as though you agree that the Earth is an oblate spheroid.

MeGusta,

Quote
There are many space agencies in the world. Do they all lie?

Yes. Space agencies are used as a cover to embezzle tax money.

Do you have any proof of this?

The stars aren't as far away from us as is claimed by round earthers.

How far away do you claim they are, and what measurements have you made to support this?

"NASA said so" is a particularly low standard of evidence.

No worse than "Rowbotham said so" ...

2285
The 'authority' in question is/are not some evil subspecies of mankind.
I don't care. If your argument is "this is true because Big Space Man said so", then your argument is useless.

No different from FEer saying "this is true because Big Man Rowbotham said so", surely?

If someone repeatedly quotes from ENaG, are they "arguing from authority", or not?
No, you've failed to present an analogous situation. If someone repeatedly claim that the Earth is flat because Rowbotham said so, they would be arguing from authority. Explicitly bringing up the work someone has done is not the same.

Why bring up his work at all, if it doesn't support the claim of the Earth being flat? If it doesn't support this, what does it support?

2286
Who are you to contradict them?
A person who doesn't fall for arguments from authority

The 'authority' in question is/are not some evil subspecies of mankind.

They are/were regular, ordinary folks like you and me, except they've built up experience and knowledge in their field which you have not.

If you wish to correct me on this, and outline your specific qualifications and experience in the field of astronomy, astrophysics, or the like, please do so.

If someone repeatedly quotes from ENaG, are they "arguing from authority", or not?

2287
You're right. They must not exhibit the same characteristics as the earth then.

But they do. Hundreds upon thousands of astronomers, cosmologists, astrophysicists and the like all agree on this.

Who are you to contradict them?

2288
Why Though?

If basketballs are round does that mean the basketball court must be round as well?

If all other planets are round, and exhibit the same characteristics as the Earth, in going around the Sun, in having Moons of their own .... why would Earth be flat?

2289
how exactly does this mean an FE win? 2 billion cubic kilometers apart on average ...

I think he meant...

[SARCASM]And so this will go down as another huge win for flat Earth theory ...[/SARCASM]

Do the maths.

Now you know that's not going to happen. If this particular poster (the holocaust denier) were able to do the maths, an entire belief system would fall apart.

OK, I shall do them. Let's say ...

Lowest orbit - 180km
Highest orbit - 6950km

(These were the limits of the SpaceX Tesla orbit)

Volume of a sphere, based on each of these, and Earth radius 6971;

(6371+180)cubed * 4/3 * 3.14 = 1,177,039,894,339  cubic km
(6371+6950)cubed * 4/3 * 3.14 = 9,896,437,120,007

Difference = volume available to sats = 8,719,397,225,669

Number of satellites = almost 3000, so space on average per satellite = 9,763,852,461,509 / 3000 =

2,906,465,742 cubic km each

Flat Earth Theory / Re: The Horizon is Always at Eye Level
« on: May 04, 2018, 07:23:32 AM »
Is it really that hard to understand what we mean?

Not hard to understand at all, just that what you say you mean is most often filled with towering vagueness.

If something is 1 foot in front of me, and at exactly 6ft off the ground, I can confidently say it is at eye level. This becomes more difficult to say with certainty as it gets farther away.

When a flat earther takes a picture from a plane, and claims the horizon to be at eye level, then what height is the flat earther at? Was the camera held to their eye, or not? If the plane is at 38,000 feet, do we take 'eye level' as 38,006, or 38,003 because the flat-earther was in their seat? Is the flat-earther claiming a horizon at eye-level because they've put the horizon at centre frame, without any kind of levelling device, or not?

When Plane Wave Media can seemingly "pick a satellite, any satellite", and capture it from Earth, why would there be any need at all for the ISS to do so?

I determined middle by connecting the corners. Draw a line from top left to bottom right, and the same from top right to bottom left, and the intersection is the middle.
Seems unreliable. It sounds like that would establish the centre of the image you're viewing, not of the area covered by the lens.

They would only differ if someone had cropped the image between shooting and display, surely?

2294
Search YouTube for "Soyuz GoPro", and there's oodles of videos of Soyuz approaching, moving around, and departing the ISS

2295
...ISS ever captured them on video? Maybe because both the ISS and satellites in general are hoaxes and the alleged ISS video footage of space is faked?

Because the ISS is in a LOW orbit, with its viewing window, the cupola, facing toward Earth. Thus, the viewing window is facing AWAY from any satellite in a higher orbit.

Because, even though some may be in closer orbits, there's still millions upon millions of cubic kilometres, on average, between them.

Do the maths. Calculate the volume of space available between low orbit and high orbit. Divide that by the number of active satellites, or even by total number of trackable objects.

End result is millions of cubic kilometres, on average, for each.

They're all out of camera range.

Flat Earth Theory / Clouds illuminated from below
« on: May 02, 2018, 10:13:41 AM »

If the Sun moves around a flat earth at a constant height, how can clouds be illuminated from above on some flights, but below from others, like this one in the video?

Can the sun ever be below the clouds on a flat earth?

How do you know that's not a disc?

The craft was seen by thousands leaving Cape Canaveral going East, two sets of these videos were seen of it passing over Australia in an easterly direction toward the Pacific, with perfect matching between what was seen from this craft and the weather satellite over the Australian region, and witnesses with cameras saw the exit burn, where it left Earth orbit, from the West coast of California.

In the same way that I saw the ISS crossing my sky with 90 minutes between passes; nobody saw this craft changing direction, nor going westward at any time. All footage is entirely consistent with a craft travelling Eastward to get back to where it started from.

Plenty o' curvature here. You just need to go a bit higher; somewhere between 180 and 6950km does it ...

I saw a shuttle launch once when i was at sea off the Florida coast, as All around the world said, Amazing.

You might appreciate;
