Arts & Entertainment / Re: Witcher 3 - Contains spoilers
« on: May 18, 2018, 04:14:13 PM »
So I have been playing my first game in years and years. Seems it was a good choice. I really enjoyed it and having a half decent computer to play it on made it look awesome.

I had no idea what the game was about, knew nothing of the story lines and everything was brand new to me.

My style of game play can be boiled down to two main traits. I'm hedonistic and I'm impatient. This turned out to be a very bad combo.

Hedonism meant I tried to sleep with everything that moved. I thought this gamble paid off but ended up getting tied to a bed and ended up with neither Triss or Yennifer.
Impatience meant I had no time for Ciri's crap. In fact after it became apparent she wasn't going to sleep with me and preferred some dumb Irish farm boy, I had little time for her and ... well she died because of it. Apparently if I'd had snowball fights with her and gone to see stupid graves with her etc she'd have lived according to the internet. We aren't related in the game. I didn't want to be her father. I wanted to be her daddy. She already had a father who wasn't very nice. I was hoping I was there to help her work out her daddy issues. It didn't work like that. Also, I probably have a disease from a succubus.  :(

I guess I suck at games. I thought killing monsters was the point. Ho-hum.

umm reported

Flat Earth Theory / Re: The ultimate proof that the Earth is ROUND...

One of the effects of mass is that it attracts other mass. For small objects, like your computer, your car, and even a building, the force of gravity is tiny. But when you have millions, and even trillions of tonnes of mass, the effect of the gravity really builds up. All of the mass pulls on all the other mass, and it tries to create the most efficient shape… a sphere.

How can I verify this myself?

You can already get blasted by a space flower actually, they've been killing people for a few months now (and they're hard as hell). They even began to cripple space stations. The new ships arriving in 3.0 (which launches Feb. 27, we learned today), are smaller, cuter, and also a throwback to the original 1984 octagonal design:

The arrival of the scouts coincides with the Thargoids arrival at "the bubble", which is the area of space roughly centered around Sol that most of humanity inhabits. They began their invasion in the Pleiades nebula, where humanity has a few outposts and where AEGIS, an organization dedicated to researching alien life, has a lot of laboratories. Each week, a few more stations are attacked, and last week they finally arrived at the edge of inhabited space. I suspect when 3.0 releases, we'll be seeing a lot of these guys around inhabited space.

Thargoids are spooky aliens which have been messing with humanity since 1984. This is one of their ships:

2018 is upon us, and along with it comes a new season of updates for Elite, titled "Beyond". This season will consist of two major updates: one this quarter (open beta has concluded, live release is expected within a few weeks), and another in Q4. There will be two smaller updates in Q2 and Q3, which will add more missions, ships, and general QoL improvements. You can read a more detailed roadmap here, but I'll offer a quick rundown of the major updates.

Q1 Update
  • Improved planetary textures
  • New ship: The Chieftain
  • Overhauled trading tools
  • Overhauled engineering system to reduce RNG and tedium
  • Overhauled crime and punishment system
  • Challenging wing missions that can be properly shared with other players
  • The ability to pirate megaships
  • Little weenie aliens for new players to fight (and probably other alien stuff)
  • A whole slew of other little changes and additions, ship buffs, new ship voices, Galnet Audio, and so on.

Q4 Update (this is the big one)
  • Complete re-work of exploration tools and mechanics
  • New celestial phenomena to find whilst using those tools and mechanics
  • Complete re-work of mining mechanics
  • "The Codex", a sort of in-game lore repository as well as a personal log of discoveries
  • New in-game player groups called "squadrons", these will fill the role of traditional MMO guilds, and will be able to purchase mobile fleet carriers
  • Further improvements to planetary surface generation, overhauled "scatter-rock" system and better fog and vapor effects (this is their concept goal)
  • A new and improved lighting model

Overall, pretty good stuff. All free, too. I played the open beta for the upcoming Q1 update, and it's great. Trading no longer requires the use of third party tools to be effective, and the new planetary textures are wonderful. A lot of these are core improvements that the playerbase have been requesting for a long time, having become tired of Frontier simply bolting on new headline features to an incomplete base game. Essentially, Frontier want to make sure they have a very solid foundation of core gameplay mechanics before moving on to the next paid release, which I am 90% sure will be atmospheric landings and will either arrive at the end of 2018 or sometime in 2019.

Oh, also, Thargoids are currently burning a path of destruction straight toward Earth.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: FAO Pete Svarrior . . .

This is tfes.org, so you are on what you refer to as the "TFES organization" right now. I think Pete explained the history of the two societies pretty thoroughly. This community (tfes.org) split from theflatearthsociety.org some time ago due to administrative issues.

I'm fine with continuing to discuss the matter. [...]

Never mind!

Well, John Davis didn't like Parsifal's most recent proposal (the exact same proposal John Davis made to us, but reversed), so he's now apparently opposed to the idea forever.

I doubt this is something Daniel would agree to, or that I should agree to in his stead; or our members and staff will for that matter. I can ping him about it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I do see your point though - that we wouldn't agree to the same deal.

Oh well! While it does seem I continually adjusted our wants to your concerns, the base premise is untenable. I have promised not to try again if this fails, and I will keep my word to that. Cheers.

As I said on the other side, I don't see any benefit to unifying if there's no forum merge.

I love the style.

I'm not going to buy it, but I do like it.

What Remains of Edith Finch is probably the best "walking simulator" (this term is a bit of a disservice in this case, since there are some actual fun game mechanics) I've ever played.

The next update to Star Citizen will be the biggest it's ever had. This will make or break the game and the set the pace going forward (again). If these features are implemented properly Star Citizen will have a glorious future. If we get another buggy mess, it's going to be downhill from here.

That's a bit dramatic. Of course it's going to be a buggy mess - that doesn't mean that it's all downhill afterwards.

Oh, I was under the impression that the full single player campaign had been released already since it allows you to purchase it on the site, and I was watching a video of some guy doing missions. May end up buying into the Alpha just because it seems like it has a lot of potential.

You could also buy Elite: Dangerous, which is a similar kind of game, just much further along in development.

Maybe my ship was accidentally calculating how many black holes there are in Star Citizen LOL

How can you even get temperature data from a black hole?

Apparently I cannot
