Technology & Information / Re: Ask Rushy about Bitcoins.
« on: March 03, 2014, 03:37:19 AM »
Bitcoin is starting to sound more like shares of stock than currency.

Let me know when Bitcoin starts paying dividends.
Irrelevant.  Lots of stocks don't pay dividends.

The Trans-Antarctic expedition did cross a significant portion of the antarctic continent, but their route can easily be mapped on the "ice rim" model as well...
Then please do so.  It would be interesting to see how the FE route compares with the RE route.

Quote
The 1979 likely did the same thing, though it's possible they did venture farther into the antarctic landmass than the previous group.
I think that some here are operating under the assumption that the geographic south pole is in the center of Antarctica.  It isn't.

Once again - no one travels as if the earth is flat.
Not even flat earthers?

2224
Missing the point.  Inquisitive is the one questioning distances at all, not me.
Then why do you keep responding if you don't have any answers?

Quote
Are you claiming that the distance between the two would be different on a flat earth than it is on a spherical one?
If spherical geometry is very different from planar geometry, then why would you expect the distances to be the same?

2225
If you don't know or don't care, then what right do you have to question the official RE distance?

I didn't.  Inquisitive did.

How do you explain the measured distances between places fitting in with a flat earth?  eg. Falklands to Australia.
Not the way that I read it.  As near as I can tell, Inquisitive is questioning the FET distance from the Falklands to Australia, not the official RET distance.

2226
No one is claiming the cartographers are unequivocally wrong.  We are claiming that it is foolish to blindly assume they're right without doing any sort of inquiry yourself.
I'm sorry, but I don't see much difference between those two statements.  What reason should I have for not believing the cartographer's distances when my car's odometer confirms that a random smattering of distances are correct?

Quote
For my part, I don't know how far it is from the Falklands to Australia, nor do I care.
If you don't know or don't care, then what right do you have to question the official RE distance?

Though to be fair, Vikings don't exist anymore.
Sez who?

2228
You say that the distances are indisputable proof, yet you have never gone there, nor have you measured them.  You have been taught that the distances are facts, and so your closed mind doesn't question that.
The distances are facts because the cartographers told me so.  Who are you to tell the cartographer that he's wrong?

It seems that Thork has made a moderately powerful enemy.

Flat Earth Community / Re: So many FES

There was a Canadian Flat Earth Society run by Leo Ferrari back in the '70s to mid '80s.  John Davis also runs a FES chapter of his own in Tennessee.

That was awesome. You're the best.

I only hope it ends the debate.
You don't know Thork very well, do you?

And here's a less recent example of why it may be a good idea to fake this stuff: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/8416561/Soviet-Union-lied-about-1961-Yuri-Gagarin-space-mission.html

If you want to advertise an ideology, it's a good idea to show some worthwhile successes to go with it.
I'm sorry, but where in that article does it say that the Russians faked Gagarin's mission?  In fact, in some ways, getting caught lying about how and where he landed proves that the mission was not faked.

A friend had a similar situation with his dog.  He was rubbing his head on the dog's belly when the dog yelped and bit him on the nose.  He wanted to put the dog down because of that, but I had a feeling that something was wrong because I knew that the dog wasn't mean like that.  His wife talked him into taking the dog to the vet where they found a rather large tumor.

Trace it back to the cold war and the space race - neither America nor Russia would like to admit that they made stuff up, now would they?
I would think that America or Russia would have loved to show that the other side faked their space program during the cold war.  Sorta like how America was publicly embarrassed when a U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Russians after America said that they weren't sending spy planes to fly over Russia.

Isn't Android open source?

I suppose that depends on your definition of open source.
Android's source code is released by Google under the Apache License; this permissive licensing allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers and enthusiast developers. Most Android devices ship with a combination of open source and proprietary software.

I'm not a huge fan of Android either. Too google dependant and it looks like shit as well.

Android is not at all dependent on Google.
Except for the fact that Google develops and maintains Android.

He had a cough too and she was a little worried that it might be cancer in his lungs, but I told her he usually has one when he's shedding a lot. She thought it might be allergies then so he's taking benadryl too and he hasn't been coughing which is a good sign for his lungs.
A dog allergic to pet dander?  Wow.

Hmm. I didn't know that Einstein didn't like the uncertainty principle.
Supposedly, Niels Bohr got so sick of Einstein's "God does not play dice with the universe" rant that he said "Einstein, stop telling God what to do with his dice".
