Flat Earth Media / al Biruni
« on: January 20, 2018, 09:13:29 PM »
Leisurely reading through Mark Sargent’s book ‘Flat Earth Clues’, the mention of the geographer al-Buruni caught my attention.

I am already aware that early Islam revived interest in Greek science which included sphericism. The early Muslim geography was based upon and greatly revived interest in the sphericist Claudius Ptolemy.

Indeed, that is how sphericism broke the hold of Christian Flat Earth doctrine by riding on the bandwagon with Islam. Much later, the Jesuits spread this spherical error to areas beyond Islamic dominance such as China.

Among other errors, Claudius Ptolemy had a vastly inaccurate map of Africa that had it occupy much of the Indian Ocean. This erroneous understanding helped stifle navigation there for centuries, and it was based upon the erroneous cartography of a globalist!

al-Biruni significantly corrected this view which eventually led to better navigation in the Indian Ocean and around Africa - with Muslims first and later by Europeans such as Vasco da Gama.

al Biruni’s map of Africa and Cosmas Indicopleustes’s map of Africa are strikingly similar. It appears that following the globalist Claudius Ptolemy caused error and ignorance whereas being guided by the flat earth model of Cosmas Indicopleustes helped correct that error.

Flat Earth Community / Oregon FE meetup Sat 27 Jan
« on: January 13, 2018, 09:37:27 PM »
Forgive me if this is not in the correct category. I thought it important to get the word out.

We’re having a Flat Earth meet-up at the Red Lion Hotel in Salem, Oregon (I-5, exit 256) on Saturday 27 January 2018 from 12 noon to 5pm.

We’ll be in the Jefferson Centre room #1 located by the rear parking lot. It’s their biggest room - carpeted with elegant round banquet tables. We’ll have free information packets with lady greeters at the door and free and unlimited coffee, tea, soft drinks, and water for the first 50 folks from 12noon to 4pm.

The hotel is within walking distance of multiple places to eat and inexpensive lodging.

The hostess and organiser is Mrs. Carolyn, and I’ll be giving two talks on the history of the Flat Earth movement (ancient & modern). We have a projector, screen, sound system, and a cordless microphone. Tentatively, Chief Crow and the Flat Earthworms from Portland will be performing, and we’ll have time for passing the mic to everyone for introductions and plenty of time for questions, open discussion, and socialising.

And by the way, it’s free.

Flat Earth Community / Alaskan Trip
« on: June 01, 2017, 06:19:29 PM »
Although I'm spending a week with the family visiting Russian villages in the Kenai peninsula near Homer, we did set aside two days to see Anchorage (Alaska's biggest city) before returning home.

Gathering knowledge will likely be the primary focus for the Anchorage leg of my trip.

Is anyone perhaps aware of bookstores or exhibits in Anchorage, Alaska dedicated especially to geography, astronomy, or the Arctic?

Flat Earth Community / Solar Eclipse of 8/21 August
« on: April 30, 2017, 06:29:43 PM »
Wondering if anyone plans to see this event. It takes place on a monday.

As the sun overtakes the moon, the shadow will evidently travel from west to east (in the opposite direction of the sun and moon). The eclipse begins out on the Pacific Ocean where the sun will arise dark on the horizon according to what I read. It afterwards proceeds from the Oregon coast over Salem East southeast across the United States crossing over St.Joseph, Missouri & Nashville, TN.

I myself will observe it from Salem, Oregon unless I manage to board an ocean bound yacht to see the sunrise dark.

One of the more informative websites which will give statistics for any city in the path:

Philosophy, Religion & Society / American Media vs Russia
« on: March 26, 2017, 09:29:45 PM »
For me, CNN shows its bias when it clings tenaciously to bogus Russian conspiracy theory about Putin manipulating American elections. Among others, the same goes for Bill Maher ranting about the Russian menace just like Ronald Reagan or Joseph McCarthy did before him.

As perhaps the nation's most prominent news broadcaster spreading fake and misleading anti-communist and anti-Russian conspiracy theories, Anderson Cooper is filling the role of propaganda chief like Joseph Goebbels did before him. This time around, the scapegoats are Muslims instead of Jews.

And finally, Anderson Cooper scores an actual interview with Putin:

This is a good story.
It's quite similar to an episode of the Jeffersons from back in the 1970's that involved the ku klux klan.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Homeless Candidate For Mayor
« on: October 21, 2016, 01:51:07 AM »
Mike Lee, a homeless activist is running for mayor of Berkeley, California.

I am particularly intrigued that Lee is a part of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America, formerly the Communist Labor Party and perhaps the most sophisticated communist organization in the US with a historical background that goes back many decades including roots in the CPUSA of the 1940's and 1950's.   I find it to be a treasure trove of wisdom and knowledge in a form that american culture despises:  historically predominantly African American and deeply interested in the homeless.

Science & Alternative Science / Genetics & Pseudoscience
« on: October 13, 2016, 04:14:12 AM »
As of now, this is something I have pondered because certain aspects of the history of modern genetics evidence characteristics that make me question some of its fundamental aspects such as hereditary theories.

For example, when I scratch the surfaces, modern genetics sure does seem to have a lot in common with eugenics and Nazi biological sciences - particularly with regard to theories of inheritance which smacks of vehement racism.

I have yet to research this thoroughly, but I intend at some point to compare the theories of Gregor Mendel and Francis Galton, the founders of modern genetics and eugenics.

A major theme is inherited characteristics versus environmentally acquired characteristics. The latter seems to be the traditional science as it was held by Hippocrates, Galen, and a host of others into early modern times.  Lamarck is distinguished only for combining it with the idea of biological evolution.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance_of_acquired_characteristics

Lamarck was followed in the twentieth century by the controversial Soviet scientist Lysenko. The massive ridicule of Lysenko in the western press and by western academia follows the same pattern of western ridicule and hatred for every aspect of the Soviet Union which gives me pause. Was Lysenko correct?

Now Lysenko was a biological evolutionist just like Lamarck as well as even his enemies. I personally disagree on that issue, but that is not the point of dispute and irrelevant albeit worth noting.

Lysenko's view of acquired rather than inherited characteristics seems fundamentally opposed to Nazi racial science. The fact that Lysenko is automatically scorned in the west makes me want to question both Lysenko and his western detractors without prejudice.

I have not yet investigated this in depth and need more knowledge about Lysenko, but I read already the assertion that the application of his theories to agriculture had disastrous results which strikes me as a quite possibly a lie because I am familiar with some of the history of agriculture in the Ukraine in the 1930's and 1940's and its genuine successes as well as propaganda from the German Nazi press as well as the Hearst newspapers talking about genocide. The claim that Lysenko caused dismal failure in agriculture strikes me initially as recycled Nazi propaganda, but I'll examine it.

Anti-Lysenko sources are abundant and easy to find. Other than Lysenko himself, the first place I think of to look for a defense of him is the second edition of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia published in the 1950's.

Anyway, food for thought. It seems to parallel other unfortunate trends in the western degeneration of understanding science.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Star Wars
« on: October 01, 2016, 05:57:55 PM »
Been reading a sympathetic history of Cold War era Soviet Union by Jonathan Arthur (published in 1977, but standing the test of time) that refutes some zealous western communists who mistakenly believe that capitalism was restored in the USSR during Khruhschev's time and who therefore join forces with the American right in demonizing the USSR.

One of the points made in this fine book is that the Soviet military was always essentially defensive whereas the American military has always been offensive and aggressive as per its imperialist nature. The Soviets have always had fallout shelters and bunkers to protect its citizens, but the US leaders  who are not concerned about their own people have never invested much in such things aside from in connection a brief red scare in the late 1950's.

I detest Reagan and his administration as fascist on the whole, but the essence of the Star Wars program seems to me concerned with a defense of people against aerial attack. That is a good thing regardless of how many so-called left books are written against it. Such criticism such focus on dis mantling and abolishing the U.S. military and not a program which actually defends Americans rather than kills others.

Part of the book is online:

Flat Earth Community / Thoughts on Early Christian Cosmography
« on: April 17, 2016, 11:29:21 AM »
Having discovered (from a Russian Old Believer source) a sketch of a flat earth with Slavonic lettering and features identical to those of Cosmas Indicopleustes, I'm interested to trace the history of how this tradition has apparently been preserved by some Old Believers as well as specifically how it passed from Byzantium to Russia in the first place.

Considering that in the ninth century Patriarch Photios wrote condescendingly of Cosmas Indicopleustes's book, I reckoned it would only help to distinguish where and among which schools of thought within Byzantium that Christian flat earth tradition persevered because flat earth was obviously no longer universal in Christendom after the followers of Muhammed revived many of the Greek writers.

The fact that Cosmas himself quotes many Nestorian writers and also that Nestorius's mentor Theodore of Mopsuestia was apparently a flat earth advocate suggests that Nestorianism picked up on the flat earth doctrine similar to the way that Seventh Day Adventists were particularly attracted to  Rowbotham's movement in the nineteenth century.

Some writers (apparently beginning with Winstedt circa 1903) have erroneously assumed that Cosmas was a Nestorian because he quoted some of them on purely scientific matters, but they ignore that Cosmas explicitly calls the Virgin Mary the Mother of God which is something that Nestorians do not believe. He also resided at Saint Catherine's monastery in Sinai which is Orthodox (i.e. Chalcedonian) and not Nestorian.

Charles Johnson's friend Robert Schadewald thought that Syria in particular was a bastion of preservation of early Christian flat earth doctrine. It had a lot of Nestorians, and Orthodox Christians in Syria at the time apparently agreed with these scientific ideas even if not the theology of the Nestorians. John Chrysostom who wrote against the antipodes was from Antioch.

More to the point, a short and very explicit flat earth treatise attributed to Saint Dionysios the Areopagite (the Athenian disciple of Saint Paul from Acts chapter 17) survives only in the Syriac language.

Based upon what appears to be the historical trend of other ancient Christian traditions, my thesis is that Christian flat earth doctrine was universal prior to Muhammad. For example, Dionysios the Areopagite was Greek, Lactantius was from what is now Algeria. Saint Jerome was from Bethlehem in Palestine. Cosmas Indicopleustes was Egytian, et cetera.

After Muhammad, Christian flat earth tradition declined, and Syria became the bastion of its preservation. After the Crusades, flat earth Christian tradition also found sanctuary in Russia along with the rest of the Orthodox Christian tradition.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / The Bolsheviks and the Old Belief
« on: May 10, 2015, 06:33:40 PM »
I wanted to say I had this post in mind especially for Chris Spaghetti from Daniel's forum and his earlier posts about atheism. He had made remarks on two occasions which indicated at least some similarity in our pursuits: namely that he was already aware and long interested in a book about a Canadian Methodist preacher who was an incorrigible Maoist (to which I might add that he check out the life of Harry Ward) and a comment of mine that Saudi Arabia's government was far more cruel than that of Israel.

I just wanted to say that I have recently discovered to my satisfaction that the elders of the Russian Old Believers (particularly the Belo Krinitsa) were not only leftist politically oriented, but heartily welcomed and supported the Bolsheviks during and after the Russian revolution. From the course of my study, this seemed logical as the Old Believers were the ancient and persistent enemies of both the Romanovs and the Russian state church after about 1654.

Just thought you'd like to know.

EDIT:
I was reminded of this as I will just happen to be stopping for the night in North Umberland, Pennsylvania this evening and will visit the American residence of Joseph Priestley, another leftist preacher whose house was burned down by the British after he wrote a refutation of Edmund Burke's 'Reflections on the Revolution in France' for which reason he relocated to this house in rural Pennsylvania on the riverfront. Priestley was also the discoverer of oxygen and carbon monoxide among other things and his house an occasional meeting place of the American Chemical Society since the nineteenth century.
