Arts & Entertainment / Re: Now Playing (the Video Game Version)

Alright, well, a couple of days ago I finally beat The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I'd been playing it in chunks since I liked to use my headphones with the 3DS for it because Zelda music, but then the last few days I've had a ton of time and sat there sinking many hours at a time into it.

Needless to say, afjsdkl I loved it. The game was so beautiful, and revisiting the world of A Link to the Past a hundred or so years later is wonderful. Knowing the land enough to navigate but with enough changes to make it new again, simultaneously getting the feeling of nostalgia alongside that of a new experience. It's amazing. Not to mention that I've never played a game that felt so fluid in every way. Having ALttP's controls and top-down view but with infinite axes of movement was a breathtaking moment from me the moment I started.

I liked the story and its few twists (one that actually surprised me considerably), and most of all I like some of the lore implications found within.

While I'm aware it's all speculation and very little Zelda lore is "canon", blahblah, a little easter egg in the game has some possibly huge implications that get me extremely-excited about where a possible future title could go. I'll get into that more later, even though nobody cares, because I am tired right now. In fact I'll talk about the game in general more later.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Forum rules: Draft 1
« on: December 21, 2013, 08:26:45 PM »
It's already against the rules to post private information like names and addresses.  But telling Gayer that she's sexy or whatever, no, I don't see why that should be privileged information that she should literally be forbidden from repeating.  This community has a long history of posting PMs for humor and whatnot, and I don't want to see that taken away based on what looks to me to be nothing more than a whim.

Right, but what if someone confided in you with personal/emotional topics or whatever in a PM? Or what if they told you something they don't want the forum knowing but you don't necessarily know that? I don't think anybody is saying "you can literally never post the contents of a PM, even if the sender/recipient has said it's okay".

I like when I say I'll get around to more stuff soon for real and then don't.

Grooverider - Mysteries of Funk: Sooo…though I specifically asked for the genre, I was pretty disappointed with this. I dunno, aside from a handful of songs I didn’t really like it, to be honest. :[ It’s just my opinion, obviously, but a lot of the songs felt overlong and repetitive, and just not really all that great. The songs I did like were the ones that were a little weirder and more variant, since I dunno, a lot of the tracks sounded far too alike for me. The track I liked the most was “Where’s Jack the Ripper”, and the two follow-ups would be “Imagination (Part 3)” and “560°”. Everything else was kinda…meh. Sorry. :[

Can I just ask why anyone would take a show called "Duck Dynasty" seriously?

They got their vowels mixed up in the first word and thought it was just a different name for Game of Thrones.

While I do worry about such a rule being open to the possibility of abuse, I do worry that it may be necessary. I mean, maybe if it needs unanimity from the mods and the admins' approval. We'll see, I suppose.

I am not even sure what this show is about. Whenever I ask anyone who's seen it they've never really been able to explain it. I'm almost curious to watch an episode or two 'cause of that, but I'm mostly just baffled as to how it's managed to be so popular that it's plastered everywhere and has popular merchandise.

That said, I don't really see how this is much of an issue. As said, anyone who claims this guy's freedom of speech is being withheld or he's being oppressed or something is pretty dumb for all the reasons stated prior already. I mean, pretty much anyone who speaks out against homosexuality so crassly in the media who isn't on a hugely right-wing network (FOX or, more notably, FOX) is probably going to get themselves in a bucketload of trouble. I mean, hell, when even sports teams, the most overly-macho of masculinity squared, will fine or fire players for doing such things...

If you're a Christian and don't think homosexuality is a sin, you're doing it wrong.

Well, I don't think "Christian" necessarily has to do with the Bible so much as following Christ and his teachings. That's why so many use the "I only follow the New Testament" excuse. That said, if they claim to follow the New Testament, it does say the Old laws still apply, but...my point is that I think many use it as a term to pretty much describe following solely what Christ himself promoted. And as he himself never said anything about gay marriage, it's kinda moot.

So yeah, it's up and I just finished it a bit ago (and watched several parts again just now). It was kind of hit-or-miss, but I attribute some of that to the fact that I've seen him do certain parts at smaller, like, 5-minute venues before in bits and pieces so when he used them in this I'd already seen them a few times. That said, most of the new stuff was pretty damn funny (as always, the songs are the best part) and I still, if nothing else, love and appreciate his anti-humour and penchant for turning comedy staples on their head, generally refusing to do standard comedy.

If you don't like fast-paced comedy and want a normal "routine" that you'd normally get from Louis C.K. or Jerry Seinfeld or whatever, this is exactly what not to watch, as there's no real "format" to speak of and stuff happens out of nowhere.

That said, I think it was overall a good show, and if nothing else, the last 13 or so minutes are absolutely worth watching. The song is (IMO) a hilarious parody/satire of love songs (especially modern ones) and pop music in general, then the closing of the show is honestly one of the best closures to a show I've ever seen. Ending a show is usually awkward and abrupt, but this was wonderful. I don't wanna spoil anything even though nobody's gonna watch it 'cause it's cool to experience and watch, I think, but yeah.

The major points worth watching, I think, are (with links! [and leaving out "God's Perspective", which I put in the opening post]):

09:43 - 13:58 (A World on Fire/Sad) — A self-evident song and a song about sad stuff and being sad and stuff.
14:12 - 16:15 (I Fuck Sluts) — Very inappropriate and gross, something I'd usually find really eugh since I'm a prude, but I find it hilarious for the Seussian contrast and the impeccable rhyming and flow.
20:00 - 25:55 (Left Brain, Right Brain) — A weird sort-of musical duel between his emotions and his reasoning, where they fuss over which is the more important one. It's odd, but I found it entertaining.
33:07 - 37:05 (Poems) — Very hit-or-miss short poems but has a couple laugh-worthy ones.
47:59 - 59:11 (Repeat Stuff/Ending) — The aforementioned song and ending.

So yeah, the rest of it is stuff you'd probably have to be a Burnham fan to enjoy (or a fan of his kind of comedy, at least) or just stuff that isn't really good.

I really don't have too much trouble with it either in regards to finding the sweet spot. But sometimes having the 3D maxed can make me a little queasy after awhile.
I've used it for around an hour with both Pokemon and ALBW. I'm more interested in the gameplay, I didn't find the 3D to be much more than a gimmick. There's probably games out there that capitalise on it more than ALBW does, but I'm not really interested in them.

Even with the small screen on the 2DS, ALBW looks very pretty. The only thing I'd get the XL for is the big screen, which is great, but I found it to be a tad dimmer than the 2DS because of the 3D feature.

Yeah, those I can understand (though I'm luckily not someone that any sort of 3D has any negative effect on). It's merely a conflict of opinions, but I wholeheartedly disagree about the 3D being a gimmick...well, except in the case of Pokémon, which uses it horribly and has frequent sub-15 fps drops with it on. In that game I turn 3D off every time I'm in a battle (unless it's an important one, like a gym battle, since those usually run fine). Otherwise, yeah.

Also, although I have an XL, I play games (ALBW included) on 2D about 95% percent of the time. I can only really enjoy the 3D effect in 30 second bursts until I'm reminded why it's a fucking nuisance.

Really? I don't understand how everyone seems to be so bad with the 3D. I use it 99% of the time with literally no problem. None. Not a single one. It takes me literally no time to find the "sweet spot" and I never end up outside of it unless on purpose. I move the 3DS around, change positions, move around, raise and lower it all with not even the slightest problem. The 3D has literally never been a problem for me and the only time I have it off is if someone wants to see what I'm doing.

Plus I think A Link Between Worlds is gorgeous with it, especially the awesome perspective effects and their dizzying use of the stereoscopy in various dungeons and caves.

Obviously I don't care what anyone plays it on and if you prefer it without 3D that's fine, I just really don't understand how people seem to have such a difficult time with it. With the sheer amount of people I meet who have so much trouble with the 3D I feel like either everyone took literally ten seconds to try to figure it out before going all old and "grarh this newfangled whirr-sprocket gizmo is terrible!" or I'm some kind of god at using it.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Should Mods Be Held to Higher Standard
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:16:34 AM »
I don't think should really plays into the equation. Like PP said, as long as they follow the rules, they shouldn't necessarily have to post a certain way. That said, I, for example, am almost definitely not going to be pulling the same kinda bitchy arguments or just general rudeness as I might've used to—but, like Roundy, this is totally voluntary and self-imposed and has nothing to do with what I think a mod "should" be like. It's more about holding myself to a higher standard than thinking it's what I'm "supposed" to do.

That said, I think the most important thing is that mods still be casual and friendly. There is nothing worse than losing members to moderation, where suddenly they don't post as much and make themselves scarce and seem afraid to post regularly as they normally would. Being a mod doesn't make you special. The worst kinds of mods are the ones that get all huffy and develop egos because they have power and get to decide what's "right" and blahblah. That's my least favourite kind of mod.

Played about an hour of A Link Between Worlds, and I'm liking it on the 2DS. The joystick is much better than the dpad was for controls in A Link to the Past and I'm liking the early story more. Besides that it's pretty similar so far.

buuuuut you're missing out on the best 3D ever ;o;

Technology & Information / Re: SteamOS is out

I don't think this is geared towards people who are satisfied with their current OS and would wonder what more they could do with this. Pretty sure this is for those who just want a simplified gaming/Steam experience.

There was a fourth season?

I'm confused. Are we not using Parsifal's method where we vote for each in order of who we most want to who we least want then use that to find out the winner?

Regina Spektor - Far: I actually really, really like this album. There’s something about her voice and lyrics—every lyric that she sings sounds so mysterious, and she seems so assured and confident that the mystery runs deeper. There’s something about the way that her songs veer from jauntily bouncing about to a light sprinkling of piano melodies layered under a moody, foggy, mysterious crooning that adds another dimension of intrigue to her music. It makes me want to listen through more and more to further decipher it. I love her falsetto, as well, and just the way she uses her voice in general is impressive. She doesn’t try to show off or go “hay guise luk im bootifull singer”, she simply uses it to complement the music, and if that means pulling off vocal acrobatics at occasional points then so be it. Anyway, yeah, this was really awesome! :D My favourites were “Machine” and “Two Birds”, no question—the formers’s like Marina & the Diamonds mixed with Ellie Goulding mixed with some sort of noise music, while the latter is a much more musically-upbeat track that juxtaposes with rather sad lyrics. “Blue Lips” would follow, since I really just like all the metaphor and imagery, while “Man of a Thousand Faces” is probably the most representative of the mysterious “what is this about and why is it so haunting?” aspect of her music and I love it for that. No idea what it’s talking about, but I love it.

While this thread didn't go very well over at .org and I was pretty much the only one who liked him, I'm poasting this because he has a new show coming out and I'm excited. Here's a new bit from it (it'll be free up on YouTube/Netflix soon) that made me laugh quite a bit, although the end is pretty cheesy:

If anyone's interested I'll put up more bits from him I like, or if you like him at all you can share your own. :]

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Re: Drugs should be legal.
« on: December 14, 2013, 12:21:20 AM »
I very much agree with Junker, Sean and DuckDodgers in this thread. The same debate on the .org site changed me from a pretty radical "all drugs are horrible" standpoint to a "all drugs should be legal and regulated" one. In the countries in which they've decriminalized all drugs, that's where drugs usage and crime and deaths have gone down, and regulating them would only help that further. Part of why people die from heroin and that sort of drug is because it's made in the streets unprofessionally, often with bad strains that cause much worse effects than they should. Whereas them being professionally researched and created they could be made much, much safer.

The same judge sentenced a 19 year old to 8 years for intoxicated manslaughter when his passenger was killed.  Tell me again how money didn't play a role?

Is comparing this kid's case to the case of an adult really the same thing?
