Flat Earth Community / Re: Post Your Favorite NASA ISS Fails
« on: July 14, 2019, 02:04:04 PM »
Thank you. The wire stuff seems pretty damning. Here are some more pure coincidences:

Astronauts on ISS Spacewalks Push Objects at a Distance

The following video shows astronauts on spacewalks pushing objects just before touching them, suggesting that the scenes are being filmed in an underwater set. See these two examples at the 5:20 mark:

Bodies are moving before being touched, which is difficult to explain. The entire video is worth watching as well.

Tom,

How do you square this with Pete's article about not always believing everything you see on the internet? (i.e. I saw it on the internet, therefore it must be true)

Thanks

Looks like the BBC are about to go on another tirade about FET.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csyvn1

Is YouTube to blame for the rise of flat Earth?

Many people who believe the Earth is not round first heard the idea on YouTube. But how important was the video-sharing website in helping the flat Earth movement grow?

This radio broadcast is scheduled to initially air today at 10:06PM BST, and will be available on-demand shortly after. It'll be interesting to see just how creative they get with the subject this time.

For those who don't remember or weren't here at the time: the last time the BBC touched the subject, we had to lodge a complaint regarding their defamatory misuse of our logo, ultimately forcing them to remove it from their materials.

My guess is that the larger context of BBC's reporting is going to be about how social media (i.e. videos like YouTube) can tend to influence certain people's mind into believing in conspiracy theories or non-mainstrean beliefs, such as believing that the Earth is flat as an example.

There are various papers one can access and read in what is being called "Bullshit Receptivity". Bullshit Receptivity being the tendency for a person with specific character trait(s) to be more easily believe in fake news, being influenced into believing in knowingly false notions, or conspiracy because of things like their need and want to feel secure in an uncertain world, their need to feel part of a unique group-think that makes them feel special, a sense of belonging, or their general distrust and disdain for anything having to do with the government.

Social media's influence can tend to be quite strong and so my guess is it's about the larger context of why and how certain people can tend to be more easily influenced.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Forum usage statistics
« on: July 12, 2019, 10:54:52 PM »
I have to ask again - what are you hoping to achieve here?

Yes, we've had fewer posts last month than we did in each of the past few months. So what? It's a useless data point, and you seem to just be staring at it while hrmming loudly.

The numbers are hardly unusual if you look at a broader timespan instead of fixating on one month. As I've pointed out to you personally before, you're mistaking us coming out of a media surge and settling into normality for... something. You're not really saying what. And if we get another surge shortly, will you stop finding it "interesting"?

Just stating that it's "interesting" repeatedly doesn't make it so. Explain what you're thinking about, and why you're thinking about it. Address the issues with your statistical analysis. I dunno, do something that actually makes this a discussion.

Although I am a RE'er, I would tend to agree with Pete. Providing a Year over Year statistic to compare differences in perhaps forum usage is not really a good indicator of anything really since there could be many possible sources of "noise" or variation. Next year or year after, numbers could go the opposite way.

While I don't agree with FE belief's, if your trying to use your statistical sheet to show a decline in FE community, its likely a poor indicator of anything, much like useless pole data for Presidential candidates.

Flat Earth Theory / When rockets launch....
« on: July 11, 2019, 10:22:42 PM »
Hi,

QUESTION 1
When the Space Shuttle program used to be active, it would launch and then the Orbiter would return a few days or a few weeks later.

If Flat Earthers believe that space travel is not possible / is a hoax, where does a Flat Earther believe that the Orbiter goes for the few days or weeks after it launches before it then re-appears and glides in for a landing? Does the shuttle launch/ glide to a secret undisclosed location without radar detection/ and then NASA somehow launches it again in secret or a clone of it so that it can re-appear and land?

I would be curious to get feedback from a Flat Earth believer on how they believe this hoax to work.

QUESTION 2
The moon has been scientifically measured to be about 240,000 miles away from Earth. This obviously conflicts with Flat Earth theory that moon is only a few thousand miles away.

Does a Flat Earther believe that the scientific measurements have been faked?

What method does a Flat Earther use to measure distance of Earth to Moon?

Thanks.
