Title: Political party preferences poll
Post by: Yaakov ben Avraham on October 15, 2014, 02:59:44 AM
I started running this poll in my thread Ask a Jew anything, and then realised that was stupid. So, for all of your enjoyment, here you are. Answer honestly. I am genuinely curious. Those who voted, do vote here again. I apologise for the confusion.

Pot Party is not a real political party, Yaakov.

You might as well add Abortion Abolitionists to that list if you're going to start making things up.

In the UK we had 3 but they were all the same. Now we have a 4th. They won the Euro elections and are now doing really well in local elections. The main parties are pooing themselves.

The major parties are in cahoots with the financial elite, they care about maintaining a good relationship with the class of people who fund them, any minor party who wants the limelight has to make the same deals. Speaking as someone from a working class family I can't see that any one of the big three (or four, if UKIP isn't just a flash in the pan) cares one whit about the best interests of the majority, only those of the businessmen who keep their coffers filled, and as such can deem none of them desirable as candidates for government, if indeed we are to consider our system a democratic one.

There actually is a Pot Party. I was surprised myself. And there is a US Marijuana Party. Also a bit surprising. And there are several Communist or Communist inspired Parties. I am a member of the Communist Party USA, the original one, dating back to 1919. The only reason I did not go outside of the UK or the USA is because I wasn't sure how many people are here from outside those countries! If there are people, I can add to the poll, no problem.

Go online and look up Pot Party and US Marijuana Party. Both are one issue Parties. It's pretty obvious what that issue is. I only added it for light-heartedness. But I did NOT make it up.

Just so you can all see that I am on the up-and-up, there is the website. The website reference to the US Marijuana Party is  www.usmjparty.org   . Enjoy.

They have a common policy on the environment but their economic and social policies are completely independent. which of course they would need to be as not all countries are the same. The UK's particular brand of greens are totalitarians intent on banning all forms of individual expression and personal independence.

Really? They're one of the few UK parties advocating for an EU referendum (The only one who does so and also supports staying in.) They've called for MP recall if a petition of the constituency calls for it, they support the right to assisted suicide, raising the age of responsibility, giving young people a responsibility over a proportion of youth spending, restricting police stop and search powers, ensuring legal parity for parents.

We do call for higher taxes for high earners, increased taxes on environmentally damaging products, but reducing it on environmentally friendly ones.

Nope. I just had a glance through their rhetoric booklet and they look very similar to the Australian Greens.

Their anti-nuclear and and anti-GM crops policies are a bugbear of mine, and I voted to try to change their mind at conference, but it's rare to find a party that I agree so much with otherwise.

I honestly cannot support any politician who is anti-GMO. It betrays a complete ignorance that I can only assume translates to every important issue.

I don't think many people are against GMO as an objective modification of plants/animals. They are usually against GMO corporations that patent the hell out of everything and sue anyone else for even looking at their crops in an unauthorized manner. I personally don't think you should be able to patent food, especially when most of the new plant they made already existed in nature. Tweaking a few genomes hardly calls for a patent.

This.

They're worried about companies like Monsato trapping third-world farmers on dependence on their non-seeding fruits.

I disagree.  I think people are too ignorant of what GMO is and consider it dangerous.  Like "Oh no, all our crops are GMO and they got a super bug that killed them all so now we'll die.  If only we had natural foods that wouldn't have died from this specific super virus".

Or they think "Man-made = mutations for humans!"

Maybe the people who only hear GMO off-hand and don't actually do any political activity believe this, but the ones that actively push for various regulations tend to lean in the direction I described. If people feel strongly about something, they'll devote at least enough time to study it. If they come to the wrong conclusions, chances are they aren't too bright/motivated and thus won't do any damage anyway.

Maybe it's different in the UK than it is in the US, but in my experience anti-GMO sentiment tends to be associated with obsession over organic food and belief in homeopathy or crystal healing. Anti-Monsanto and anti-GMO are two very different things. The first is completely right, the second is based on ignorance and anti-science.
