Title: Star Wars?
Post by: Ghost of V on July 11, 2014, 07:59:34 PM
Should I watch Star Wars? I haven't seen them since I was a kid. Its massive popularity always turned me off, but I have been browsing some of the Star Wars wikis and I am impressed with the large expanded universe and lore of the series. Are they worth watching? If so, in what order should I watch them?

Please do not confuse the Star Wars Expanded Universe with the Star Wars movies.

Star Wars movies are classic space romps. Avoid the first 3, and you're good.

Also lol wtf how haven't you seen Star Wars?

Watch the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy, realise that it was a decent trilogy, then avoid everything else bearing the Star Wars name.

Yeah, that's a good point. Anything post VHS versions have minor changes that either don't do much for the movie or are a detriment.

Is the newer trilogy really that bad?

Shut up, Vinny.

Watch Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure. All other Star Wars films are shit.

False, the remastered laser disk versions were amazing!

Also, the Clone Wars animated series was decent.

qft

If you are going to watch the prequels then make sure you follow each viewing with the Red Letter Media reviews so you can find some humor in the train wreck you just subjected yourself to.

It's basically the story of how a whiny kid grew up to be a whiny adult and then completely changed his life focus to start killing innocent people on a whim based on a few nightmares. Lucas managed to drag this out to three feature-length films.

I've heard how bad they are, but its part of the canon and I will watch it because of that. Grievous was bad ass if I remember correctly.

If you consider a Jedi killing cyborg (why I don't know) who coughs a lot to be bad ass.
And he dies in a pretty shit way.

Also, watch the clone wars mini series from cartoon network.  Not the nickelodeon one.  Its awesome and fills in so many gaps as well as portray anakin's shift to evil WAY better.

There's a difference between the Clone Wars series on Nick and Cartoon Network? I thought they were the same series, just aired on different networks.

The prequels aren't the worst movies ever by any stretch of the imagination, but they're definitely a case of the bad outweighing the good.  From a critical eye, they're actually fascinating to watch, almost as a "what not to do" guide to filmmaking.

Nope.  The cartoon network one was first.  Its from the same director as Dexter and Samurai Jack.  Its a series of 3 minute episodes.  Watch it.

Its set between episode 2 and 3.  So you should watch those two first.

I watched about 20 minutes of it at work. I was surprised at how well done it was. Some of the fight scenes are pretty cool too.

It seems to be 80% fight scenes. Which isn't a bad thing at all given how fun they are.

I feel like any movie described as a "what not to do guide to filmmaking" has to be one of the worst movies ever by definition.

They also transformed glorious Star Wars lore in to over-simplified crap.

I just finished watching it again.

So good.  You can tell the animation was rushed but I fail to care.  The story is awesome.

Don't put yourself through episode II. It's about 19 hours long, filled with a teenage Anakin Skywalker whining about not being at the head of a major galactic organisation of psychic warriors.

Episode I was a bad film, but at least it was fun to watch in places, EpII is one of the dullest films I've ever seen. A friend and I watched all six a few months ago back-to-back over a few nights, the only reason we didn't just give up on EoII and have an early night was that it would have felt like cheating.

I don't see why.  A huge number of movies are made incompetently, and yet they vary wildly in quality, from mediocre to terrible to accidental masterpieces.  With the prequels specifically, the mistakes made are so clear and obvious (especially in comparison to the existing trilogy) that they lend themselves naturally to some very elementary film criticism, as we saw in the RLM reviews.

No, Star Wars. Trek Gods can't control the Star Wars universe, obviously.

The Trek universe is mostly ruled by good guys, while the Wars universe is mostly ruled by bad guys. Everyone knows the good guys always win, so it'd be Trek by a landslide.

This is sound logic. I'm going with this.
