I just got a new laptop, so its unlikely I have anything untoward on there. But I wonder if any of you might scan and find evidence of your government creeping on you. Post if you have anything juicy. :-)

This is Windows-only software. Windows is a terrible choice of OS to begin with if you don't want to be spied on; since its source code can't be audited, there is no way to be certain that the OS is even correctly reporting details of such files.
If this tool detects something, good for you. If it doesn't, you're no better off than you were before you ran it. If you can't trust the OS, all bets are off.

Linux is a viable alternative. It's more secure, free, and can do mostly everything Windows is capable of. Windows is just extremely popular and has big dev support making updates/fixes a lot more convenient. Windows is usually easier for a company to manage compared to Linux, but that doesn't mean Linux isn't a viable alternative to Windows. Most of the US government uses Linux based systems, so it's obviously viable if you're willing to put in the effort.

Give me 6 multi-national firms that issue Linux to employees as the predominant desktop platform.

The answer is yes, your government and every other government in the world (yes, literally all of them) is at least attempting to spy on you. How much you give them depends on what you do and using Windows is probably a good way to tell them everything.

Actually, we do have one computer with Windows 8, but is such a buggy piece of shit that nobody uses it except when they have to. Whether that's due to Windows or the computer itself (probably a mixture of both) I don't know, but the Linux computers run better than just about any equivalent Windows computers I've used. Now that I've personally used a Linux (Unix?) based computer, I think I might switch over once Steam gets more Linux games. It has swayed me.

What kind of work related work gets done on these computers? Also, what distro?

^ Uhh, I dunno specifically. I use it in tandem with the scan guns and keep track of finances, purchases, invoices, spreadsheets, etc. I couldn't tell you what higher-ups do with it. We don't play video games, though, so there's that.

Linux is Unix-like, but not Unix-based. It was written from scratch as a clone of Unix, but doesn't share ancestry with Unix.
The main problem with linux is driver support. Video cards especially have a tendency to have half-assed drivers from the manufacturers and the best they can do from the community.
This is simply wrong, unless by "video cards" you mean "NVIDIA video cards".
