I was thinking I could probably add Arthur Koestler to that list of folks who've written a couple of uncommonly useful critiques of "science" in spite of their distasteful political views. Perhaps 'Sleepwalkers' is his best.

'Atomic Imperialism: The State, Monopoly, and the Bomb'
By Sol Auerbach (1952)
(using the pseudonym "James S. Allen)

Following the methodical style of Upton Sinclair (and of the Bible for that matter) of tracing the trail of greed and money behind every evil, this leading communist writer researches how the Morgans and DuPonts took over and monopolized the weapons of mass destruction industry. It includes a lot about how the military serves these families and the military's role in the perversion of science.

Just picked up this substantial book over the weekend along with a pamphlet by the same author explaining all about cartels.  This book is an expansion of the cartel theme with regard to nuclear weapons.

I've got other books by this particular author on American history which are invaluable being both solidly informative and radical.
